《Maeve》ChapterFive: Miracle

"You know my lord that it is not too late to retract the beheading."
"Are you questioning me, Timotheus."
"No of course not, my King. It's just that he is your cousin after all."
"Blood isn't always thicker than water."
"Our former Queen wouldn't like this."
"Do you want to join my cousin Timotheus, because soon you will be with him and what comes to my mother she is dead."
"No of course not, my King. I'm just a stupid royal advisor who doesn't know when to shut his mouth." After saying that Timotheus blended in the shadow. If his King needed him he would command him to come out.
Timotheus has been working as an advisor for the royal family for many decades and has now finally being trusted by the King.
A few hours later the royal beta marched inside the throne room.
"Is it true, my lord?"
"I have no conception what are you meaning. You should know better than disrespect me, Cato." The beta called Cato Armeny looked at the advisor. That is a clear sign that he is not needed. They would kill Timotheus if he didn't disappear faster than the light.
After the royal advisor had left Cato started to speak again. "What did he do to deserve all of this? Is this all because he feeds the human?"
"He disrespected me for the last time and now he has to pay the consequences."
"You know that he is as stupid as a brick."
"He should know better than calling me by my name." After that, the beta stayed silent. He knew better than calling his best friend using his birth name. That gamma really did screw things up this time. There is no way that he will survive.
"Who is going to be our new gamma?"
"The person who deserves that place."
"When it is going to happen?"
The King stayed silent. Maybe he hasn't decided that yet. "Tomorrow morning."
"Is there anything that can stop you from doing that, my lord?"
The King stayed silent. He didn't open his mouth in minutes so Cato thought that he isn't going to answer his question. It wouldn't be the first time. If something the beta has learned in his years is that never ever question the King. His father was an evil ruler but Dominic is the devil.
"A miracle."
***
The royal beta continued his journey to the prison. The guards standing and guarding there didn't say anything to him as he walked by. They were too scared to say anything without wetting themselves. They didn't want to join his blacklist. It was empty because all of them are seven-feet underground.
"Beta." They bowed in front of him but he didn't care.
After reaching in front of the cell that held his 'friend'.
"You are the stupidest person that I have ever met. You sealed your future at that moment you said his name."

"I know Cato."
"Why did you do it? You know that he has killed everyone that has killed him by his real name and you being the stupidest person ever yelled his name."
"I know."
"Why did you do it!?"
"I didn't want her to die."
Cato couldn't believe him. He, the royal gamma, risked his life because of a human. A weak pathetic naive human girl who can't even handle a sip of wine. That human is going to destroy everything if she didn't die. She will die.
"Tomorrow morning."
"What about that."
"That is the last sunrise you will ever see if a miracle doesn't happen and we both know that miracles do not exist."
"I know."
"Goodbye, you brainless brick." After saying that Cato started to walk away from Caspian. He couldn't understand why Caspian risked his own life for a human knowing it would kill him. Humans disgusted him. They are nothing more than a sack of blood for vampires and for werewolves they are nothing more than slaves. And the King hates humans more than anything. His father even almost destroyed the whole human species. That's why he only took humans to be his playthings because then he could make them suffer.
There is something special in that human girl.
If there wasn't she would already be dead or at least tortured that she would be begging for her death. But no. They cave her food that even the highest one would have eaten. They even gave her a glass of red wine. And if she wouldn't be special, Caspian wouldn't lose his life tomorrow.
"Cato?" The former gammas voice echoed to his ears but he didn't answer.
"Don't let him kill her."
"Why would I do something like that? She is a slut who only causes trouble. If you ask me I would kill her right this second. Why should I spare a life of something that should have died a century ago?"
"You are right, but you don't know what consequences you will be getting if you kill her."
"Oh, you are wrong. I know what consequences I will be getting, NOTHING."
Caspian stayed silent.
"Well if that is what you think, do it as a favor."
"I promise nothing."
***
The room Maeve was staying is quiet. So quiet that if you would drop a needle you could hear it. It also felt like temperature in that room dropped few degrees.
The King stood in front of her bed.
He didn't say anything, he only stared at Maeve. Maeve felt very uncomfortable and why wouldn't she? The King of nightmares stood in front of her and stared at her. It seemed like they had made an agreement. She didn't speak to him so he didn't speak to her.
Now that Maeve saw his face properly she noticed that he was a complete opposite to her.
"What is your name human."
She didn't know what to answer him. Yes, she could tell him her name but is that really what she wanted. He would torture her anyway and end up being dead either way. But there is something in her screaming to say her name.
"M-maeve."
After hearing her name the King marched out of that room. Like he didn't care about her, but the truth is that he doesn't or that is what Maeve thinks.
"I should have just kept my mouth shut." Now she didn't know what he is going to do with her name. Or maybe he just needed something to write on her gravestone. But something inside of her told that she isn't going to die soon. 'Or maybe I have lost my mind' She thought.
She remembered all the tales she heard about the King. They were all ruthless and cruel. Except for one. Her mother told that story when she was only five years old. She didn't remember much from that story except few facts. The King was never loved. His family three has a dark history where everyone is the dark sheep of the family. His family was merciless and cruel. And that has probably made him be the darkness mother warns her children about.
Someone should make the King feel love, but that is impossible. The person who is going to do that has a death wish. And that is what made Maeve cry.
Everyone should feel loved.
***
Next morning came sooner than everyone would have wanted. Today is Caspian's execution day. No one did know how they should feel about their gamma being executed by the Kings orders. Some people thought that he deserved it and some that he is truly innocent and it is cruel to kill your own cousin.
Many tried to chance their Kings mind but no one succeeded. There was no one more powerful than the King that could stop the execution.
Few maids came into Maeve's room. They started to chat about one of their mothers. Maeve didn't care that they are cleaning the room she was in. She didn't care either about their conversation before she heard someone mentioning 'Gamma Caspian'.
"E-excuse me but w-what is h-happening to gamma C-caspian." She asked.
The girls looked at each other. "Today is the day of his execution."
All the air in her lungs left. "W-what did you s-say?"
"Our gamma is being executed today and is going to our former gamma. He disrespected the King and now he has to pay the price."
"When?"
"In five minutes."
***
Dominic watched as few guards walked his cousin and gamma to the place where he would pay the price. Many have come to see the historical moment. This day is going to be written in books as the day great king Dominic Deàsun executed everyone that has ever disrespected him and family was no exception.
"My King, everything is ready for the execution." One of the guards said.
He watched as the people from his Kingdom gathered together. It was perfect weather, the sun shined and a few clouds are seen in the sky. Tomorrow would start a rain that will last few weeks maybe even months.
Everything is perfect.
His beta Cato walked to his right side and nodded. There were no miracles existing in this world.
"May the execution of gamma Caspian Piercè begin."
***
Maeve has never in her life run this fast. As if her own life depended on it. It felt like everything around her was just a big blur.
Caspian couldn't die. He is her only friend and now he is going to die. She couldn't let that happen. Someone has to do something and if no one else is going to do so then Maeve has to do it.
"Y-you are g-going to d-die anyway." She murmured to herself.
She is running all around the castle. It was so big that Maeve got lost countless times before finding a way out. Once in a while, she saw a window. Outside the castle is a huge crowd waiting to see their gamma being executed. It made her sick.
Who comes to watch other people dying.
Then she heard the words that she was most scared of. "May the execution of gamma Caspian Piercè begin."
"NO!" She screamed. No this couldn't be true. She couldn't be late. If she was late she would never forgive herself. She had lost so many people in a short time that if Caspian would die she had had enough of this life.
The crowd between her an Caspian didn't move even an inch when she tried to walk through it. They aren't going to be passed by a weak human girl.
"L-LET ME PASS!" She screamed but no one really heard her. There is so loud ripple of conversation that who could hear a small voice.
That is when she started to crawl between their legs. Once in her life, she was glad that she is short and small.
"Whoaw! What is a human whore doing in here?!"
"Where?"
"Oh, well girly we are having the time of our lives after this whole execution thing." Maeve felt a vomit rising in her throat. It it would have been any other situation she would have thrown up. But now throwing up would take too much of her time.
Now if never was her time. She would regret the rest of her life if she didn't do it.
Maeve started to rush towards the podium where her friend is. She didn't care about the looks other people gave her. She didn't care that the royal guards were now trying to catch her.
When she finally reached the podium one of the guards caught her and then an ear-ripping inhuman growl was heard. That guard let her go and she ran to shelter Caspian's large body with her small one.
"What are you doing Maeve?" He snapped.
"S-saving y-yo-your life."
"Stupid human." After Caspian had said that a voice of ax is heard and after that, there is only a young girl crying and screaming as someone threw her over his shoulder.

Blood & Noodles
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] As they always have, humanity hunts the gods roaming the world, craving the supernatural power that flows within their veins. Even a drop is zealously guarded, passed from master to student through the ages. It is with this stolen power that the Blooded - those with divine blood coursing through them - grasp beyond mortality and achieve prestige, power, and greatness. Yet, for every fraction of power gained, thousands perish, slain by the gods' supernatural prowess. But everything is beginning to change. Eight years ago, for the first time in human memory, a god was felled. Part-time chef and full-time nuisance Orvi wants nothing to do with gods. Living in a derelict city, his only concerns are ensuring his adopted family's restaurant is prosperous and how to best beat the neighbourhood boys in a fight. If he's lucky, he might even snag a date with the farmer's daughter at the market. But even though he cares nothing for the gods or their blood, the world won't leave him alone forever. Because to reach godhood, one must first leave their humanity behind. *** The first arc of Blood & Noodles follows the adolescent Orvi as he attempts to navigate his rapidly changing home and - by his own definition - protect his family. The story is told almost entirely in the first-person, from the perspective of a teenager who isn't always the sharpest tool in the shed. There are tragic elements, especially in the current arc. It's character-focused and driven, though the protagonist's shenanigans are backdropped by a world operating independently from him. Orvi's a generally light-hearted character, and though the story veers into darker territory, I also want it to be able to make readers smile. Action sequences, despite the fantastical elements, are meant to be grounded and clearly-conveyed; Orvi is a brawler, not a warrior. I'm trying to write a story that's enjoyable to read and flows nicely, mainly because it's more fun to write. I'm also trying to improve my writing, so any feedback, whether positive or negative, is welcome!
