《What happened in Vegas - English version》Chapter 7

Is he serious? Have I heard wrong? Am I losing my mind? What is happening here?
"What are he doing?", I ask Ragnor. He puts his hand reassuringly on my arm and shakes his head slightly.
"What is the meaning of this?," I ask, upset.
"Calm down Magnus. It only means that you will stay married for a year. Nothing more. After that year, the divorce will be official and you can go your separate ways", I hear him say and nod my head imperceptibly.
"Okay. Then I'll see Alec back here in a year." I breathe a sigh of relief, but the judge isn't done yet. His clearing of the throat resounds loudly through the room.
"You two..." He points his finger first at Alec, then at me. His dark tired eyes bore into mine. I swallow hard, something telling me this isn't the end of it.
"You two will live together this year. Just like spouses do." It's a joke. It has to be a joke. Is he serious? Outraged and open-mouthed, I stare at him. He is serious. Fuck.
"I'll see you in a year gentlemen. This hearing is closed." The banging of the judge's gavel on the small round wooden disc seals his words. The verdict is in. We are still married. A whole year. We are to live together. Live? What does the judge mean by that? What does he mean? Alec is a stranger. You want me to live with a stranger? I can't. I wasn't even ready to let Julian into my life that far. And I'd known him for six years, after all.
"Magnus?" Ragnor's voice and a touch on my arm brings me out of my thoughts. Confused, I look at the older man. He smiles slightly, but the expression in his eyes tells me he is concerned.

"The hearing is over. We must leave the hall." Mechanically, I nod and stand up. My legs carry me outside, down the long corridors, down the steps and outside the courthouse. Warm air hits me, the annoying sound of horns from impatient taxi drivers, passers-by talking wildly, the noise of a too big hectic city. And me in the middle of it all.
"You're all pale. Are you not well?" I hear the deep voice of Alec. The thoughts in my head are racing.
"No. I'm a little queasy," I say quietly. It's not a lie, my stomach tightens painfully. The thought of living with a strange man for the next year squeezes the air out of me. But again, it's a matter of keeping my composure. What good does it do me to lose my mind now? Nothing at all. I am still married, after all.
"What do we do now?", I say, suddenly registering that we are not alone. Alec is standing in front of me and next to him is Jace, his brother. Behind Jace I see Simon, smiling kindly at me and holding the dark-haired beauty I saw on Alec's display. Simon's fiancée? Alec's sister, the resemblance is astonishing. They are all here to support Alec. I am alone. My support is Ragnor. Alec's lawyer looks at me suspiciously. I've already forgotten her name again.
The way she looks at Alec, keeps touching him casually on the arm or shoulder tells me they must know each other well. Disgusted, I screw up my face when I see the smile on her too-red lips and the glint in her way-too-heavy made-up eyes. She wets her lips and pushes a strand of her clearly blonde hair behind her ears. My heart skips a few beats as a thought forms in my head. Is she flirting with my husband? What do I care? Alec can flirt with whoever he wants. And yet I can't deny that the thought of Alec with this woman makes me very uncomfortable.

His family is united behind him and I feel very lonely right now. Raphael and Andrew are both out of town. They regretted not being able to be there for me. I still shrugged it off by saying, „It's a matter of five minutes. Don't worry about it." Who could have known it would end like this? That I am still married and have a new flatmate as of today.
"There's no way I'm moving out", I say with conviction.
"You couldn't have moved in with us either. We share a small flat", replies Jace, crossing his arms in front of his broad chest.
"Besides, it's an opportunity to ask my girlfriend to move in with me."
"Do you even want that Magnus?", asks Alec anxiously.
"No. Of course not." Alec's expression looks even sadder than it did two seconds ago. My flippant reply seems to have hit him.
"But since we have no other solution..." Theatrically, I spread my arms. "... I guess you're my new roommate. At least for the time being."
"You shouldn't be discussing this here in the street", Ragnor murmurs in my ear. He's right, this is the wrong place for such a conversation. And we should talk about some things.
"Let's go to my place. If you have time", I say, turning to Alec.
"Sure. I'm off today", he replies. We say goodbye to the others, I promise Ragnor to get back to him and order a taxi for Alec and me. The journey goes on in silence and with every metre closer to home I become more restless.
Because halfway there I realise I don't know if Julian has collected his things. Has he returned to his flat or has he started a siege of my house? I spent the last few days on the couch with Raphael and Andrew. Not exactly comfortable, but doable.
"Nice neighbourhood. Quiet", says Alec.
"Hmmm. Very nice", I reply, lost in thought, only realising we've reached our destination when the door on my side opens. Slightly irritated, I look up and straight into Alec's face.
A slight smile plays around his mouth. I am about to pay the driver when he points at Alec.
"I took the liberty. You picked up the hotel bill", he says and thankfully I get out of the car.
With shaky fingers I put the key in the lock and take a deep breath. Somehow it's all like a bad film. I quickly turn the key and realise that the door was locked. So Julian is not sitting waiting on my sofa. Relieved, I enter the house. I throw the keys into the bowl on the sideboard and get rid of my jacket and shoes. They land loudly in the next corner and the jacket lands on the armchair.
My way leads me straight to the kitchen, I fetch two glasses and a bottle of water. Back at Alec's, I stop and watch his reaction to my set-up. He stands in the living area and looks around with interest. He holds my jacket in his hands and stares spellbound at the wall next to the patio door.
"Wow. That's a lot of books", he says quietly.
"And I've read every one of them", I say aloud and Alec does a little jump in shock.
"That jumpy?" I raise an eyebrow mockingly.
"Actually, no. But you sneak up on me like a cat."
"Get used to it. You live here now", I reply sarcastically.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
8 153Riftwalker
Legend speaks that a roaring force of insatiable abyss lies beneath the peaceful overworld. Named the Rift after its chasm-like entrances, this unexplored void has consumed the underneath for eons. What had seemed just a myth crawled out of unreality in the form of eldritch creatures. Reborn as something not entirely human, mankind rejected the boy. Thrown into the Rift by people who feared him, he had to live in a world run by monsters as a newborn. Surviving, however, wasn't his only difficulty as he soon had to decide whether he would save the people who banished him or simply idle as the Rift engulfed all life. As of chapter 9, Riftwalker is on a very small hiatus. I'm very busy with work atm :( Here are a couple of things to expect: Lots of action and exploration! Diverse and refreshing creatures; There are good and evil. Satisfying progression and coming of age. The protagonist stands out but isn't overpowered. There are some litRPG elements, but it's not a determinant factor. The fights are decided through one's combat skill and experience and not stat-checking. Oh, and some other info: There is a bit of gore, but nothing disturbing. Occasionally, there will be images of the scenery and landscape. Chapters will be around 1,5k to 2k words long, and the releases will probably be relatively slow, sorry.
8 112The Flamelight Chronicles
This is a fantasy novel with a unique magic system. Imagine if Eragon, Kingkiller Chronicles, Benjamin Ashwood, and more had a weird group baby-- that's this book! It's like a coming of age high fantasy novel. Eligor is born into a world where everyone has magic. Your status in life is based on two things: your bloodline and your magical power. To Eli, who lost his parents, was born in a small town named Stathen--in which not a single person of true nobility lives-- and is the only person who seems to have no magical power, the world seems perfectly unfair. That is until one day everything goes horribly wrong and perfectly right.
8 61Majestic Fiend
There are many creatures and monsters inhabiting this magical world. Nanza-cats, gremlins, dwarves and so on, they come in a wide variety. Some are big and strong while some are quick and agile. Some possess intellect to match or surpass human level and some live for hundreds of years Yet, at the peak of creation throned the humans, disdainfully looking down on the rest of the world. During a night chase, the animal Ssyba is poisoned, assaulted from the cover of darkness and left dying in the streets. But as consciousness streams from the head wound, she is met with a destiny that she can't deny. With meticulous methods and great ambition, Ssyba will stop at nothing to achieve her own ends and overcome the many enemies along the true path to heaven.
