''it's okay, you're okay. It's gonna be all right," Ashton kept whispering into Aana's ear as he felt her hand tightened around his. Her short yet pointy nails digging into his palm. Breaths were uneven with chest heaving every second past. Her eyes were squinted and teeth were clenched.
Aana was lying on the hospital bed, her breathing was fast, deep and uneven. Her skin was clammy because of the sweat as she struggled. She wanted to focus on that one thing but the pain was a lot. She was already half way through, the last part was remaining. Her energy was slowly draining away. She was becoming weak, too weak. It was also her first time. But twice more painful than the majority of people go through.
"Aana, baby, a little more. You're doing great." Ashton caressed her face with one hand, the other in a death grip with hers. His eyes were big with obvious concerned for his wife. His own heart was beating fast, adrenalin rushing through. He hated to see her struggle like that, but all the necessities were begging to let it happen.
She looked up at him with pained eyes. "Try more baby. Please, push a little more. A little more, Aana," he encouraged.
Yes, Aana was giving birth. To twins. Fraternal twins. Both baby boys. Aana had already given birth to the first baby, about to the second. Though, she could admit that the second one was the easy one as the first one had already eased the passage. But the tiredness with the contractions had drained her off, the pain was at the utmost level for a human being but Aana still didn't lose hope. She was still conscious and doing her best to stay awake and push the little life out of her sensitive yet strong body.
Now, even if Ashton couldn't comprehend the physical pain his wife was going through, he could feel every shiver that ran up and down his spine every time a tear left Aana's exhausted eyes or every time she moaned or screamed in pain. He respected his wife with no limits, and every other female in this world who had to go through not only the labour pain but the nine months of physical, mental and emotional struggle.
Aana screamed and arched her back. The head of the baby was out. A few more moments and finally the baby was made known, free in the reality of the world. Ready to survive the beauty and the beast the world offered.
"Good job," Ashton whispered to the now utterly weak Aana who had slummed motionless on the bed, though she was panting. He kissed her clammy forehead. Sight of tears in his owns eyes visible with pride and overwhelming emotions. Soon the doctors started to clean the babies and the mother up.
The doctor and nurse cut the umbilical cord. The process after giving birth was so underrated. It was difficult for Aana with the cleaning ups too.
The doctor then passed the baby to Aana's awaiting arms. All the struggle and pain felt worth the second that little life was placed in her arms. The small fisted hands, the closed-wrinkled eyes and the cry which felt so soothing to the ears. The babies had a little amount of hairs just above their forehead. Their skin was a little red. Arms, legs and face had baby wrinkles. The babies had wrinkled skin because they were in a premature state.
Aana looked at the baby in her arms, the little prince. She kissed his head and cried silently. She was happy but her emotions were all over the place. Meanwhile, Ashton had the older twin baby in his arms. He was a proud, 26 years old father. Ready to be the best father too. He'd prepared himself for this. Prepared for the world of fatherhood. Prepared to make his spouse and family proud.

Aana started to breast feed both the babies one by one. When Ashton placed the second baby in the crib after he was fed too, Aana immediately fell asleep peacefully. She was weakened after all of the workout. Ashton immediately embraced his wife in his arms. He was so proud of her. She did it. A normal delivery, not even a caesarean. She was a tough cookie and she made it. She successfully gave birth to twin boys.
Soon enough, the door was opened and Aana's parents and Ashton's father entered the room. The parents were happy holding their grandchildren. Trisha, Aana's mother even tear up. Her only daughter was a mother now. The feeling was something only she could feel in the room.
Trisha kissed Aana's head and caressed her face. "That's my girl," she muttered smiling.
Ashton smiled at his now mother-in-law. He realised that she gave birth to not one, not two, but five kids. It was a big deal. He just witnessed his wife giving birth to his sons and Trisha doing it five separate times was phenomenal.
There was a knock on the door and two men entered. Both were of same height, had similar facial features but different facial hairs. One of them had a thick stubble, Robbie. And the other one was a clean shave, Rayan. And even if Robbie and Rayan were twins. They were not only different by personality but also by choice of look.
Both their eyes first settled on their sleeping little sister and then searched for their new nephews. They smiled warmly and scooped them in their arms.
"You're gonna be amazing, my little champ ... Just like me." Robbie said as he held one of the twins in his arms.
Rayan scoffed, "you're gonna be hella talented, little one. Just like me." Rayan said to the one he was holding.
Both the babies were asleep but talking to a sleeping baby is completely normal, isn't it?
"Shut up douchebag, you know I was the talented and amazing one growing up." Robbie playfully kicked his twin brothers' foot.
"Nope, nada. And- I was the good-looking twin too. Wait, hold on. We're identical twins," Rayan said in realization. Growing up, no one could tell them apart. Only family could.
The room chuckled as the two grown man showing childish competitiveness. Robbie and Rayan had always been like this, still always had each other's side. Thus, they were architects and were working together in their own built business. They were now in their early thirties, had girlfriends ready to get married and settled down.
"They're fraternal, idiots," a soft voice said. The twin's eyes settled on their sister. Pressed against her husband, Ashton's side. Her eyes were tired but lips had this satisfied smile that radiated warmth.
Robbie put the baby in the crib and walked next to Aana from the other side and embraced her in a hug. Even if he didn't have any experience in someone giving birth close to him for as long as he could remember, he knew the fact that giving birth was one of the most painful and tiring things. And he was so proud of his little sister.
"Tired?" He asked softly kissing her forehead.
"I'm fine," Aana muttered.
"She's fine. She's my tiger after all," said David. Their father. David was now in his early 60s, was bald from the back and sides of his head. Face more shrunken, but had the same 'ol attitude.
Aana smiled mildly at him. Her father smiled back.
And then the door again opened and came in a teenage girl. She had bangs on her forehead, hair in shoulder length. Was 5 foot tall. Had a smile on her face 24/7. Guess what guys? This is our Lucky. Now a beautiful 13 years old.

"Aana!" And she did learn how to say her aunt's name properly eventually.
Lucky squealed and hugged her aunty. She then looked at the babies and cooed at them. She loved babies. Often asked her father for a little sibling too. Her father had married again. Yes, Venky had married a women three years younger than him two years ago. So Lucky's wish for a sibling could really become true at some point.
"Can I hold one of the babies?" She asked in a hopeful eye.
"Sure Luck," Trisha said and gently placed a baby in her arms. Lucky looked at them with tears in her eyes. These was her brothers! Her cousin brothers. Rayan who was the closest to her, laughed and hugged her. Well, Luck had grown up into an emotional lady, not to forget she was in the initial stage in her teenage years. Say hello to loads of emotions.
Aana looked at her little nephew caressing her baby boy in her arms. This was pure happiness. Aana was so grateful having the people she loved around her all the time. The one who truly cared for her. Who supported and encouraged her for from every the ups and down. No matter if it's schools' graduation or getting the first internship to the first job. They supported her when Ashton finally proposed her on a building terrace, almost making Aana have an emotional breakdown. She loved having a loving family which was once dysfunctional.
Aana's eyes wondered upon to a figure leaning against the door frame. He was wearing a cream suit and matching pants. His hairs were thick and gelled back. His face showed mix emotions, happiness, warmth, hint of tears, pride and what not.
It was Venky. He was a 34 years old man now. Had light stubble on his face. One thing which was the same about him was his emotional nature, which he never tried to hide.
Venkat's eyes shined with pride and warmth. He stepped inside and embraced her sister into his arms. He didn't let her go. Everything was very overwhelming. Since Aana and their parents had started to live with Venky, Aana wasn't only his sister but also like his daughter. He took care of her. He wanted to make up for the ten years of the life which he missed on her. And Aana couldn't be more grateful to have such an amazing big brother who was her biggest support system she could ever ask for.
When someone who is like a daughter to you becomes a mother, things become overwhelming, alot. Venkat was overwhelmed from the core of his heart
Ashton had already stepped back because he knew, Aana and her pack of brothers were going to have an emotional get together soon. Also, Olivia, Ashton's 19 years old sister had come into the room after Venkat. Him and his sister having a small chat. Olivia had grown up a pretty and bubbly women. She and Lucky were still best friends. Sometimes, Olivia behaved like Lucky's big sister too.
''I'm late, I'm late,''
A guy in his mid-twenties clumsily entered the room. He had thick stubble on his face and had long hairs [long enough for boys] tied up in a small man bun at the back. He was wearing a tank top and khaki short. A camera hanging on his chest.
''You're late, Ishan'' Rayan agreed, crossing his arms around his chest making him look pretty scary.
Ishan stuck his tongue out and waved at Aana. He glanced at the babies and gave her and her husband a proud smile. Then he and Aana started having a little conversation. Aana was still pressed against Venky's side seeking comfort which he always offered her.
Ishan was a professional photographer now. Often had shoots with models, youtubers and businessmen and businesswomen.
The room was a chaos. Everyone were scattered around the room, talking, laughing and being goofy. The only two who were at piece were the little new born twins sleeping peacefully in their cribs.
A nurse entered the room and gasped. Having so many people in one room was against the rules of the hospital.
''Excuse me, What is going on here? Can you all please leave? So many people are not allowed to be in a room at once, hello!'' she shouted and at least managed to get a few of their attention.
''All right, all right. We should leave,'' Venky stood up and held Lucky's hand, asking her to leave with him.
''Oh no, hold on a minute,'' Ishan interrupted.
''No, please try to understand. If any doctor or supervisors visits this room, I' going to lose my job,'' she was now begging.
''I just want to take a picture, a family picture. Please hold on a minute,'' Ishan rambled and walked up to the nurse asking her to take a family picture for him.
The nurse only rolled her eyes. But nonetheless took the camera and stood in position to take the picture asked.
Then there was chaos all over again. Everyone trying to figure where to stand or sit to look perfect in the picture. The babies were placed on Ashton and Aana's lap. The couple embracing each other. David and Trisha were beside Aana' side smiling and side hugging each other. Ashton's dad was by Ashton's side. Venky and Lucky were standing beside Trisha. Robbie and Rayan were crotched beside the hospital bed with wide goofy smiles on their faces. Ishan stood beside Olivia and her father giving a thumbs up at the camera.
Meanwhile, Ashton stared at his wife with a warm smile as he observed her every move. Aana was in a light blue hospital gown. Her hairs were messy but in spite of that were settled down on her shoulders like soft feathers. Her eyelids were a little swollen because of all the struggle during the labour. Nonetheless, when her eyes met his, he melted into her glaze. He felt complete in his life like this was all he needed. A beautiful wife which he swore to pamper all his heart with. Two tiny kids who would look up at him as they'll grow up. And finally a family which'll always have their side no matter what the circumstances.
Ashton and Aana connected their foreheads and their noses touched. A small, beautiful smile spread over Aana's lips as she blushed and closed her eyes as the admiring eyes of Ashton never left hers.
''Eh, wait wait!'' Ishan yelled making the nurse groan and put the camera down. He looked at his sister and Ashton. ''what would there name be though?"
''oh yeah, have you thought of any?'' Lucky asked excitedly.
Aana smiled at the babies and nodded. She took a glance at her husband and grinned widely. ''we've been thing about ...''
Then Aana and Ashton announced the names, ''Luv and Kush.''
The nurse being impatient of all the family drama, huffed and finally took a picture without any warning. Little did they know, the flash took a perfect candid picture where everyone were looking at each other with wide smiles on their faces. And from now on, Aana started a new life of motherhood which she sure was going to do a wonderful job in.

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
