《My Brothers Best Friend》Chapter 20 // Angry is an Understatement

Carter's POV:
We were sitting in Toby's diner and were waiting for Tara, Annabelle and Elijah to arrive. We had been keeping our plans under wraps until we were sure we were going to go through with it. We had all said that we hadn't decided who we were going to pick but honestly I already knew. I had tried to spend time away from Annabelle but it hadn't worked so I thought spending time with her would be the best way forward. I had tried to take my mind off of her with Elizabeth but I felt like she was always around to avert my attention. Then I saw as her and Tara walked in. They sat opposite of us with confused faces whilst ours were plastered with mighty grins.
After a few minutes of unavoidable arguments the girls were updated on what was going down. Their expressions were priceless, I felt the smile on my face grow larger as I tried to avoid laughing as I saw a seat being pulled up next to us and it was Elijah. We all spudded him as he sat down and told him the same thing we told the girls and obviously he was completely down with the idea. Everyone seemed ok until all of a sudden Annabelle went all Sherlock Holmes on Danny. She began asking about Gwen and I knew she was setting Danny up for a trap, he didn't know but soon became unstuck as she made him reveal that him and Gwen had broken up. I felt the awkwardness fill the air and decided to cheer everyone up, "on lighter topics, who's everyone picking?". Tara then sent death stares towards me as she said, "do we even have a choice? If not why are we here". All four of us boys looked at each other and laughed as I said, "honestly we just wanted to see your faces when we told you, better face to face than over the phone ". After that we all watched confused as Tara and Annabelle stood up and began to leave.

"Where are you going?" Matt shouted towards the two girls, they stopped and turned towards us, Tara then said spitefully, "your planning doesn't involve us so we're going to leave now". Then turned and began to leave again as Matt shouted at them "actually.." he waved them back over and once they reached the table he started again, "actually I wanted to ask my girl sooner rather than later". I felt my whole face crease up in confusion. I looked at Matt with my confused expression and said, "I thought we hadn't decided yet Matt?", I struggled to say the sentence inconspicuously and almost as if had hadn't registered my annoyance he just shook his head. "I wanted to sort it out early, what do you say Anna?" and I stared at Annabelle who was now frozen and silent. I looked straight back at Matt and asked curiously, "why Annabelle?". I wasn't even trying to mask my annoyance now as I stared at Matt waiting for his answer. "We just kind of have that relationship" Matt said smugly and before I could answer I heard Danny speak up, "relationship?". Exactly, what relationship?
I waited for a response from Annabelle and I saw her take a deep breath as she said, "Matt you're not serious we don't have a relationship and we never will do I'm not another conquest", she said it so harshly that I couldn't help but let the small smile creep up on my face. Matt literally looked like he'd been slapped, in that moment I was sure I looked super smug but I didn't care. "Anna I would just like to spend some time with you" Matt said feebly, I quickly rolled my eyes and waited for her next smug answer but instead I watched her blush and say "I'll think about it". She then left with Tara, I was furious. She had fell for his stupid charm and it irritated me in unimaginable ways. I felt angry with her and Matt. I looked at Matt as he said, "I hope she says yes" with a cheesy grin he turned and began talking to the others, "I hope not" I whispered to myself.

I was sat in my car alone and my plans had come undone. I had wanted Annabelle and I once again had been deprived of her, maybe it was the universe's way of telling me it wasn't to be, but then who had they wanted me to be with. Then it hit me. Elizabeth. She had been popping up in my life recently and maybe it was time to rekindle the flame. I smiled feeling accomplished, I could try and get some alone time with her. Elizabeth had to be the one surely, I pulled out my phone and texted her:

8 361The Stormcrow Cycle
Once a powerful and lauded witch, Ba'an salu-Ba'an now lives alone in a cave in the desert, waiting to die. When she rescues an outlander from certain death she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of politics and empire, of heart and soul, but worst of all--of hope and love and a chance at a peaceful future. Can a disgraced witch find a reason to live her life again--and if so, what price must she pay? The Stormcrow Cycle is a trilogy comprising of The Exile, The Lion, and Abomination. Tags or genres for each book: The Exile: romance, slice-of-life The Lion: romance, slice-of-life, politics Abomination: tragedy, high/epic fantasy (aka "Everything is on fire!") Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!

"Curiosity killed the kitty Miss Adams." My body stiffened. Slowly I turned around just to see Mr. Parker standing in front of me with hands in his trouser pockets. I bit my lip. I thought he would be angry but when I looked at him. His face showed no emotion. He then started walking towards me I moved back. This continued until my back hit the door. Then he placed his one hand on my side, leaning forward, close to me."What was rule number three Miss Adams." His face was extremely close to mine my breath got hitched. I couldn't answer his question why? Because I was more focused in the distance between us."I asked you something Miss Adams."
