《My Brothers Best Friend》Chapter 15 // The Lake

Annabelle's POV:

I had been sitting downstairs alone for two and a half hours. Danny was asleep in his room and Carter asleep in mine. I had sat there drinking my tea that I had made and now it was cold which had put me off it. I had left my phone and laptop in my room and now I was stuck in boredom. I was wearing loose jogging bottoms and a large hoodie which wasn't really suitable enough to go anywhere in. I sighed loudly, I had to find something to do and I had no idea what. I walked into the kitchen and put my mug in the sink, I thought I might go to the park and go for a run as I had some free time before school started tomorrow - but that meant getting dressed.

I slowly crept up the stairs being mindful of the ones I knew made sound and made my way to my bedroom. I walked in and saw the back of Carter's black haired head. I turned and closed the door carefully, then I walked over to my wardrobe. I looked for my leggings, gym top and hoodie then walked quietly into the bathroom. I got changed and put my hair in a high ponytail. I stepped out the room and inspected Carter - still asleep. I grabbed out a pair of socks and sat on my chair and put them on. I looked at Carter and saw just how sweet he looked asleep. He had an air of innocence and strength about him and for a while although I knew it was creepy, I just watched him sleep peacefully. I grabbed my trainers and began putting them on. I pulled the laces tighter as I felt the shoe was loose and collided my elbow with the draws next to me, with that Carter's eyes fluttered open.

"Shit sorry" I said standing up quickly, he blinked once, twice then three times obviously registering everything and sat up sharply. "Hey Annabelle" he said sleepily, I felt my body tingle at the sound of his voice like this and gave a weak smile. He stretched his arms out above his head and at this I began to walk out the room but was abruptly stopped by his voice ripping through the silence. "Where are you going?" he asked looking at me intrigued and I looked at him and said "just to the park, I need some form of exercise before school starts". He chuckled to himself and nodded, I was unsure of what to say to this and so I turned and began to leave again. "Hold up I'll come with" he spoke confidently, amplified by the silence. The words rang in my head, something had been happening to me lately when he had been around and to stop it I thought avoiding him would fix it but that was proving difficult. Shit...

Half and hour later and we were walking silently together to the park. It wasn't awkward between us but that was probably because so much had happened lately that it was still sinking in - for me it was anyway. We reached the edge of the park and still neither of us had said a single word. I'd come here to lap the park but I wasn't really keen on letting Carter see me go out of breath and red faced in a matter of seconds. I wanted something to break the silence or cause a distraction so I could get to running and then my prayers were answered, "Hey Carter". We both turned around to see Elizabeth standing there, "hey" he replied casually.

They were now mid conversation with each other and I thought it time to leave, seeing them laugh giddily between themselves agitated me. I turned, pulled out my headphones, plugged them in and began running. I was trying to clear my head and focus on running but all I could see in my head was Elizabeth's big smile, I was sure she still liked him and he probably still liked her. I rolled my eyes and looked ahead and continued running. The path split into two and I had to pick either left or right. Right led to the fountain where most people headed and left led to the lake which was less crowded, so I chose left.

I began running and came up next to the lake. It was beautiful in the spring as the water glistened and the grass looked green and healthy. I looked up at the scenery and as if by magic I saw Elizabeth and Carter talking closely together. They were on the other side of the lake but the sides met quite closely. I pulled out the headphone that was closest to them which was my left one and tried to listen into their conversation. I could hear some words but it was still a little too quiet and so I edged closer.

A/N

I quite enjoy Elizabeth's character and I think she's very much an asset to Carter.
