《Picture Day (Inanimate Insanity AU)》Scalpels

No POV:
The wall of Balloon's box then begins to open.
Balloon flinches as Cobs grabs his arm and he struggles to get his arm free, but fails to do so.
Fan watches as Cobs drags Balloon out of the room. Cobs then chains Balloon down to a metal table.
"So, what should I punish you with. Drowning? No, you would just float to the top." Balloon watched in fear as Cobs pondered different ways to torture him.
"How about I take something important from you." Cobs says with a large grin spreading across his face.
"I dont have anything you can take." Balloon snapped at Cobs. Cobs slammed his hand down next to Balloon's head, making him jump. "Talk to me like that again and your punishment will be much worse." Cobs growled.
Balloon watched as Cobs walked over to a tray that was lying on a counter, and picked up a scalpel from the tray.
Balloon's heart dropped and his face turned pale. Cobs then walked over to Balloon and began slowly sawing at his arm. Balloon screamed and felt his eyes begin welling up with tears. He tried to fight against the restraints but it only made things worse.
Balloon could feel the warm blood running down his arm and could hear the grinding noise of his bone being sawed through. He shut his eyes tight trying to stay strong, he hoped it would be overwith soon.
After what seemed like hours of sawing, Balloon's arm was completely severed. Tears streamed down his face as he struggled to free himself from the restraints.
Cobs then released Balloon and dragged him back to his box, where he was then shoved in. Cobs grinned and threw Balloon's severed arm into the box.
Balloon began to scream and Cobs looked satisfied with himself. Fan covered his mouth.
"You can keep your arm," Cobs said still grinning, "maybe next time you'll know not to be so nosy." Cobs then walked off and opened Knife's box. Knife glared at Cobs who then took him and dragged him off.
"I cant take this!" Fan said hyperventilating. Fan then rushed over and struggled to try and open his box, to no avail. He collapsed to the ground and curled into a ball, then began to cry.
"Fan calm down," Balloon said holding the stub of what was left of his arm, "we will get out of this..." Balloon was starting to doubt himself. Balloon and Fan had only been there a day, but it didnt seem like there was much of a chance of getting out.

About an hour later, Knife came back, coughing up water and holding his stomach. He looked tired and flopped to the ground once he got in his box.
"Ok, so we've taken care of the eavesdroppers," Cobs spoke, "we can start on the actual subjects tomorrow."
Fan covered his head and backed into one of the corners of his box. Balloon sat there trying to think of different ways to get out, and Lightbulb was asleep.
The lights then turned off. Nobody had realized how late it was, due to the fact that there were no windows in the room. Some people sat and thought, and others decided to go to sleep for the night. Balloon glanced over at Fan, who was now asleep in the corner of his box.
Balloon figured he should get some rest as well. He layed down and struggled to get into a confortable position. He longed to be home, in his bed, safe and warm, not on a cold, hard metal floor.
This was not reality though. He felt sadness and anger and wanted so badly to get out, but there was nothing he could do.
He didnt realize he was crying until he felt the warm tears running down his face. He wiped them and hugged himself. Everything was quiet, and eventually, he fell asleep.
Next Day
Balloon sat up. His eyes stung from crying so much the previous night and his arm ached. He felt lightheaded and tired.
He glanced around hoping it was all just a horrible dream. Unfortunately for him, it was all real. He sighed and curled up into a ball, staring at the ground. He then heard tapping on the right side of his box.
He glanced over and saw lightbulb with a sympathetic smile on her face.
"Hey buddy, how ya doin?" She asked, rubbing the small cut on her hand from the day before. "Im alright I guess." Balloon softly mumbled.
Lightbulb's small grin faded and she glanced down at the severed arm next to Balloon.
"What was it like?" She asked quietly as to not wake up the others. "What was what like?" Balloon responded. "Getting your arm cut off. Was it painful?"
Balloon raised an eyebrow at Lightbulb. "Well what do you think?" Balloon asked. Lightbulb stared for a bit. "So... it was painful?" She asked.
Balloon nodded. He thought it would be pretty obvious, but then again, this was Lightbulb he was talking to.

"Oh wait, was that something you didnt want to talk about? Im sorry, I didnt think about that it's just that I-" Balloon cut Lightbulb off. "It's fine Lightbulb, it's really not that bad." Balloon lied.
Balloon looked away from lightbulb and down at his arm. "I mean, at least it doesn't look too bad, you'll have a pretty cool scar to show off." Lightbulb said. Balloon chuckled a little.
He appreciated Lightbulb trying to cheer him up, but it was hard for him to be happy in this situation.
Suddenly they heard a loud buzzer sound, causing Lightbulb and Balloon to jump. Fan jumped up from his sleeping position with wide eyes, not expecting the sudden loud noise.
The other objects woke up as well. Balloon and Lightbulb watched as Cobs walked in with a small smirk on his face. Balloon glared at him and scooted back a bit.
Lightbulb just looked worried which surprised Balloon. Normally she would be happy in any situation, but after seeing what happened to YinYang, Balloon, and Knife, she became nervous about what was going to happen to the rest of them.
"Good morning subjects!" Cobs said still grinning, "Today is the day we being the procedures. I will be starting with those of you that are... less intelligent."
"What does intelligent mean?" Apple said from one of the boxes farther to the right. Cobs just stared at her then ignored her.
"Anyways I think I will be starting with that one." Cobs said as he walked towards Apple's box. Apple's expression changed from confused to nervous. "Wait what? Is it because I asked the question???" Apple panicked as her box opened and she was dragged out of the room.
Fan was covering his eyes knowing that whatever was going to happen wouldnt be good, and Balloon was just staring at the ground not wanting to have any part of it.
"Well what do we do now...?" Lightbulb asked with a worried expression on her face. Fan looked over at her and shrugged slightly. There wasn't anything they do other than sit in their boxes.
Lightbulb frowned, then reached up to the shatter on her head and carefully touched it trying not to cut herself again.
"Hey what happened to your head?" Fan asked. He had never gotten the chance to ask her before. "Oh, I tried to break the box with my head but it didnt work." She said casually. Fan stared at her with a confused look.
"Ooookkkaaayyyyyy..." he said feeling a little awkward for asking. Balloon sat siletnly for a while before finally speaking. "We need to find a way out of here. We cant just sit here and do nothing!" He exclaimed suddenly with a look of determination in his eyes.
Lightbulb and Fan looked at him confused by his sudden mood change. "Well what are we supposed to do? I dont see any way we can possibly escape right now." Fan says.
"Maybe we can do this!" Lightbulb exclaims. She then lights herself up and smiles proudly. Balloon and Fan stare at her. "How exactly is that supposed to do anything?" Balloon says using his still-attached arm to sheild his eyes.
"When Princi- Cobs comes to take me, I can light up when he opens my box, blinding him, and giving me enough time to run out!" She exclaims.
"But then what about us?" Fan asks. Lightbulb ponders for a moment then turns her light off and sits down. "I didnt think about that..." she says glumly.
"Hey dont be discouraged!" Balloon jumps up. "You can just open our boxes while he's still confused and we can come back later with help to get everyone else out!"
Lightbulb perks up again. "Thats a great idea!" A huge smile spreads across her face. "Then its settled! We have an escape plan!" Fan says excitedly.
Their smiles didnt last for long though. Cobs then walked back in, but Apple was nowhere in sight. Fan, Lightbulb, and Balloon look over and notice that she was gone.
"Uh... Where's Apple?" Fan asks nervously. Cobs glances over at Fan.
"Apple didnt make it through the procedure" Cobs says with seemingly no emotion at all. "What's that supposed to mean?" Lightbulb asks.
"What I mean is..." Cobs starts,
"She's dead."

Luckily, there is a new VRMMO technology with extreme time compression that will allow him to make the most of his remaining years. The new game K.O.R.A.L. promises to be the most immersive MMO of all time, with many of the traditional tools of players stripped away and a permadeath system for their characters. The only problem is the Alpha phase two years ago has made the NPC population of the game extremely paranoid about Travelers, and likely to kill them whenever they are discovered. *If you have specific concerns/notes/questions about the story feel free to PM me as well as leaving comments*

This is my third novel on Royal Road, the first being "Beyond the Horizon's Eye", and the second being "The Dawnfire Archives". This story is something of a test in a new genre, that of CardLIT. We'll see how well it succeeds as the story continues. It takes place in a different setting than my other tales, with an entirely new cast of characters. It does, however, contain several ties between the stories. Average post between 1000 - 3000 words.
