《Actions Speak Louder Than Fortune Cookies》62 - Reset and Legal

Thursday rolled by quickly and Sebastian and Rylee were now back at the hospital waiting for Dr. Singh in a small side room with a wall full of X-ray light boxes.

"Megan's got me nervous about this Ry."

"Don't fret. Whatever happens happens. We can get through it together."

"But I did what I shouldn't have done...and googled what could happen...and...if somethings healed wrong a lot of times they'll-"

There was a knock on the door and Dr. Singh entered with Megan.

"Hello Sebastian, Rylee, how've you two been?"

"Not too bad, yourself?" Sebastian responded politely, even if his nerves were shot.

"Not bad, not bad. Well, let's get right to it shall we? So Sebastian, you said earlier this week that you still occasionally experience pain in the leg that was broken, correct?"

"Yes, occasionally sharp stabs of pain, sometimes dull pains through the night."

Dr. Singh nods, "Well, your X-rays are showing us exactly why that is."

He stepped over to the wall and turned on the switch, sending a bright glow across the room. He quickly shoved the three X-rays they took a bit ago into the clip on the light box, so now the X-ray was fully visible.

Dr. Singh brought along a silver marker and circled the three places that Sebastian's leg had broken. "Can you see these three specific spots?"

Sebastian and Rylee both nodded.

"Well, those three spots should look like this.." and he slid another X-ray into the clip next to them. He circled the same spots and once he did, it was very easy to tell that things weren't looking how they should.

"This happens surprisingly more than you'd expect. Especially when someone had multiple breaking points at once. He pointed to the first circle on his X-ray marked A. Circle A looked perfect. Bones straight, everything in line. Dr. Singh even stated so, but then he drifted to Circle B, in which you would expect the edges of the bone to line up perfectly, just like in Circle A, but these ones do not.

Circle C also looks the same. You would look at the picture and expect to be able to shuffle it a bit to make the pieces line up, but no. The bones had healed slightly crooked, causing pain in the area.

Dr. Singh paused and looked Sebastian straight in the eye. "This is not ideal, but sadly it is our first course of action in these cases, but, in order to correct the bones, we need to reset them."

Sebastian's heart fell into his stomach. That was what he was about to tell Rylee before the doctor walked in and he was afraid of that.

"Now listen. Obviously it sounds scary. No one wants to break a bone to begin with let alone do it a second time on purpose."

"But this procedure is simple. We would use a local anesthetic on your leg and will indeed essentially rebreak the bone in both places and place in an internal fixation with plates and rods on both spots to help encourage correct regrowth.

"You'll be put back into a cast again until we give the bones time to heal and then we will do another set of X-rays to decide our next course of action."

Sebastian looked at the X-rays in aw. It was amazing how a bone being a small distance off from where it should be could affect your body so much.

"I would suggest we get you all scheduled up and into surgery for this sooner rather than later." Dr. Singh commented matter of factly.

"Sebastian?"

Sebastian looked at Dr. Singh, not even realizing he had zoned out. "I've got a press tour coming up in three weeks."

"Well sad to say, you'll be in a cast for it. Well, actually since the two pieces that need fixed are closer to your ankle, you could actually have a walking boot instead of a plaster cast. But you would still have to start out with crutches and work up to just using the boot for support."

All Sebastian could do was nod. Being on tour with crutches was going to be a nightmare.

Dr. Singh continued talking about the logistics of everything and soon enough, Sebastian was scheduled for his reset for this upcoming Tuesday, December 21st.

Dr. Singh gave them a list of things to do to prep for his surgery as the date got closer as well as the rest of their discharge paperwork and then Sebastian and Rylee were on their way out the door to the car.

Once they got there they sat in silence for a moment. "You gonna be okay, Seb?" Rylee said, putting her hand on his thigh.

Sebastian nodded but still looked downtrodden.

Rylee really didn't know what to say. She simply patted his leg again and they drove back home.

The next evening, Sebastian was relaxing on the couch when he got a call from Morgan from Marvel's legal department. This surprised him because usually Morgan was an emailing type of person. She usually avoided phone calls when she could.

"Hello?"

"Hey Sebastian, it's Morgan, and I'm here with Jane. We...Um...we got some news from OSHA. Is Rylee nearby?"

"No, she just went to work for the evening."

"Ah, well we think this pertains to her as well...would you like us to wait to discuss this all together or?"

"No, that's okay, I can relay the message. What's going on Morgan?"

"Well, when accidents happen on set, obviously everything gets shut down and OSHA comes in to run a review and do an investigation. Our corporation also runs their own investigation, and the StuntWorks company does as well.

"Each of our companies came together after completing their investigations and all found the same information. And...we all believe the rigging...yours specifically...was tampered with."

Sebastian sat there in silence for a moment. "You mean like some deliberately messed with my rigging?"

"Yes, Sebastian. At first we all weren't sure, but when we all presented our findings to one another, all the same points kept popping up.

"Marvel and StuntWorks are always very diligent in checking equipment and being sure everything is up to code. But your rigging, on that specific day, was signed off by someone that no one recognizes, at least on paperwork. They signed paperwork under a false name, and the name also doesn't show up on the payroll accounts.

"Are you telling me...someone wanted me hurt? Or...or dead?" Sebastian sat up in awe, almost terrified. His chest began to ache. Breathing was still sometimes difficult as his punctured lung was still on the mend.

"It's a very, very real possibility Sebastian. We've officially opened an investigation with the police as we believe this was not a simple accident anymore. And we wanted you to know about this open case as the police will be calling you within the next few days to discuss everything.

"O-okay." Sebastian was still trying to catch his breath. He felt like he had the wind knocked out of him.

"Sebastian. Are you okay?" He lightly heard over the phone, barely comprehending it. He thought it was Jane talking now.

"Y-yeah. It's just....a lot to...take in."

"Is there anything we can do for you at the moment?" Jane asked.

Sebastian shook his head but forgot he was on the phone. "No. No. I'm okay. Thank you for calling Morgan, Jane. I'll be in touch."

"Alrighty Sebastian, we'll talk to you later, buh bye."

"Bye."

Sebastian could have thrown up on the spot. The idea that someone did that made him feel physically ill. He took a moment to collect himself and debated on calling Rylee at work or not, but he decided to do it.

He called Rylee's cell phone but it rang through to her voicemail. He decided not to leave a message but called Ruby's bar number. Hoping Rylee would be around.

"Ruby's Bar, this is Alexa."

"Ay Alexa, it's Seb. Is Rylee around?

"Uhhh yeah, let me grab her."

There was a moments pause where Alexa must've just set the phone down on the counter to go look for her, a minute or so later he could hear the phone being shuffled back around and the voice he had been dying to hear oozed through the phone.

"Hey baby," Rylee stated cheerfully, "to what do I owe the pleasure?" Sebastian could tell she left the bar area for somewhere quieter because the volume of noise behind her had decreased significantly.

And that was it. Sebastian laid it all out on the table. He somehow remembered most of the details Morgan told him. All coming out in a rush, he felt like he had vomited out all the words.

There was a moment of silence from Rylee's end.

"But who would- ....what are the chances-"

"I was thinking the same thing Rylee. I mean sure, I'm some celebrity and people probably hate me somewhere for something. But enough to try and do that? No, that's just one person I can think of."

"But how could he have..."

"I dunno, Ry. I dunno."

There was a moment of silence, "I'm coming home."

"No, Rylee. I'm okay. Honestly. Stay at work. We can talk about it more when you're off. I just...wanted to let you know about it...and hear your voice. Its helped me relax a bit.

"Seriously, I'll go tell Johnny I've-"

"Rylee. It's okay. I'm okay. I just wanted you to know. It probably would've made more sense to wait and tell you after work. But honestly I just wanted to talk to you."

"Well...then hi." Rylee said quietly, easing the tension quickly.

"Hi," Sebastian tried to smile, "how's work been?"

"Not too bad. Just the usual...how has your night been....besides that news...?"

"Pretty good..."

They continued chatting for a few more minutes, but then Rylee said, "Shit, I'm sorry baby, but I've gotta go. Are you absolutely sure you're okay? Because I will leave right now..."

"Yeah, hun, I'm fine. Finish out your shift and I'll see you when you get home, okay?"

"Okay...I love you Seb."

"Love you too Ryles."

They both ended the phone call at the exact same time, and both sighed afterwards at the exact same time too.

——————————

When Rylee hung up with Sebastian she stayed by the phone for a moment, almost like she was waiting for him to call back and say "Never mind, please come home early."

"Everything alright with Sebastian?" Alexa asked quizzically.

"Umm...sort of?" Rylee stated. She then gave a quick synopsis of what Sebastian told her about the rigging.

"Oh my god. Is he okay?"

"Yeah, ish? I asked if he wanted me to come home and he said he was okay. So we'll see." Rylee shrugged.

Rylee was glad he had called to tell her but now that was the only thing on her mind the rest of the night.

——————————

When Rylee got home around 4:45 am, she was surprised when she opened the door. There was light dimly filling the room from the tv that was still on. It was on Netflix but it was paused and had the words "Are you still watching?" floating on the screen.

When she walked further into the living room she saw two sleeping figures on the couch. One was Sebastian, sitting up, casted leg on the coffee table, and his right leg touching the floor. His arms were crossed over his chest and he was leaned back into the back of the couch, head lolling to the side, leaning on the other person, who she quickly realized was Chris.

Chris was also sitting up, but his hands were laying randomly in his lap, feet on the floor and head lolled onto Sebastian's shoulder.

Rylee didn't have the heart to wake either of them up. She got out her phone and sent Alexa a quick text that Chris was over and was asleep and she was welcome to come over too.

She passed because she was beat and ready for bed but asked for a picture of the boys because Rylee said they were being all cute together.

She obviously obliged and snapped the quick picture of the two, and sent it to Alexa. But as soon as she sent it, she looked at it again, and decided to make it her home screen picture.

She smiled as she slid her phone onto the side table by the bed and went to go shower.
