《Actions Speak Louder Than Fortune Cookies》60 - Two

The rest of the next week and a half passed by achingly slow for both Sebastian and Rylee. The days seemed so redundant and draining. Nurses coming in and out at all hours, dealing with getting in and out of bed for tests (though they had finally gotten the hang of it and it didn't hurt to do as much anymore), rating pain on scales from 1-10, always fluctuating depending on the day.

Though a major positive of the week was that Sebastian's left eye could now open completely, though the heavy bruising still remained. He was just happy to be able to fully see again.

When Thursday rolled around, Sebastian was disappointed when Dr. Singh came in to discuss updates. The doctor suggested staying a few more days until Sebastian's sprained wrist healed. Once it did, it would be much easier for him to be mobile at home.

He was bummed by the news, but he understood. Rylee wouldn't be able to lug him around by herself and Chris isn't always available to help. So it made sense to just try to be patient and ride out the next few days.

Later that day, Rylee was laying in the bed next to Sebastian, scrolling through different social media's and she stopped when a news article caught her eye. It was dated with the night of Sebastian's accident.

Terrible, scary news to report on this Friday evening.

According to a reliable source, this afternoon, while filming for Marvel's newest untitled Captain America movie, Sebastian Stan, 39, was injured on set. Our sources say he was completing a stunt that involved a harness and the harness wires malfunctioned, causing him to fall from a large height. It's unclear how severe his injuries are but it is being reported that he was taken by ambulance to a hospital near by, possibly in critical condition.

Chris Evans, Marvel costar and longtime best friend of Stan, was seen entering the hospital along side Sebastian Stan's girlfriend, Rylee Summers. Soon after, a handful of other costars were seen entering the hospital, including but not limited to Tom Holland, Hayley Atwell, and Anthony Mackie.

We here at E!News wish him well and hope for a speedy recovery. We will update you as soon as we hear about his condition.

"I feel like e!news is the web version of when people say 'pics or it didn't happen.' Like...if they don't write about it, it didn't happen." Rylee stated as she scrolled past the article when they were done with it.

"I dunno how they find this shit out to be honest. I mean. It's always a closed set. And NDAs are absolutely a thing."

"Who knows. There's always worms crawling in the wood."

Sebastian stopped reading and looked at Rylee. "What the hell kind of analogy is that?" Sebastian laughed.

"I don't know." Rylee laughed back.

The next few days drug by just as slowly as the past week had, but overall things were going okay. On that upcoming Monday, Dr. Singh removed Sebastian's splint and had him gently flex his fingers and arm muscles.

"How's it feeling?"

"A two." Sebastian smirked, continuing to flex his fingers. Dr. Singh was expecting a more detailed description, but huffed a laugh at his 1-10 scale reference they've been using the last week and a half.

"That's great, Sebastian. Having a hand available while the rest of your body heals will make you a lot more independent. And it will make the healing process that much easier."

Sebastian couldn't wipe the smile off his face.

Yes, he was still in a leg cast.

Yes, he still had his arm in a sling.

Yes, he still had his entire left side bandaged up.

Yes, he still looked like he was in a bar fight.

But he had a hand now. And that's something he didn't really have five minutes ago.

Rylee watched on from the small sofa, taking in the look of pure joy on Sebastian's face to be flexing his wrist. To an outsider, it would seem like nothing, but this means everything.

"How about we give your hand the rest of the day out of that splint and see how it feels in the evening. Then we'll see how well getting into a wheelchair works both independently and with Rylee. Sound good?"

"Sounds great." Sebastian smiled.

Dr. Singh tapped Sebastian's chart on the end of the bed with a smile, saying goodbye and headed out the door.

Rylee immediately leapt towards the bed and gave Sebastian a deep long kiss that he returned easily. "I'm so proud of you," Rylee said quietly, a few inches from Sebastian's now rather scruffy face.

Sebastian furrowed his brow, confused, as much as he could anyway, the left side still not quite matching with the right.

"You've been through so much the last few weeks and the silver linings finally shining through. You've been doing so well." Sebastian had scooted over while she was talking so she could hop back on the bed with him.

All Sebastian could do was smile at her words and kiss her again.

Six o'clock came quickly and Dr. Singh had returned. "Alright, moment of truth folks. Are we ready?"

"Ready as I'll ever be," Sebastian smiled.

"Okay, first off. How's the wrist feeling?"

"Great. Still a two."

"Awesome. Alright, if you're up for it, how about we try a codependent wheelchair transfer."

Rylee stood up and went by the wheelchair, slightly nervous. She didn't want to mess this up for him.

Sebastian looked at Rylee and nodded, and she nodded in return. She helped him sit up and swing his legs over the side. Now the hard part. Rylee was given a transfer belt, which looped around the back of Sebastian to help aid in lining up his center of gravity with hers.

When she looped it around him she was very close to his face. When she looked up into his eyes, he winked at her, and god she didn't realize how much she missed that wink.

She whispered a count of 1,2,3 to him and they both slowly stood up and turned in unison towards the wheelchair, slowly sitting down into it. She quietly heard Sebastian suck a breath through his teeth, wincing a little but it went far better than she expected.

"Howd it feel?" Dr. Singh asked.

"Good. Surprisingly easy?" Rylee answered.

"Yeah, not too shabby," Sebastian tacked on.

"Ready for the reverse?"

Both Rylee and Sebastian nodded. She grabbed hold of the transfer belt that was still tucked behind Sebastian in the wheelchair.

Sebastian put his right hand on the side of the bed, and on another 3 count Rylee helped him stand up and turn to sit down. Once there, he scooted back and Rylee helped him gently lay back towards the pillows.

"You two are so good at working together. You should go out some time." Dr. Singh teased.

They, as well as Laura, laughed in return.

"Alrighty. So. Sebastian are you up for one more solo round? Or do you need a break?"

"I'm good, let's do it."

"Alright, the floors yours."

Everyone stepped back to give him space. He slowly pulled himself by the bed rail with his right hand and scooted himself to the end of the bed where he put his legs over, not super easily, but it got done.

Moment of truth. The move from the bed to the chair. It would be different at home. The bed would be lower. But this was the true test.

Sebastian took a deep breath aided by his cannula and gingerly slid off the side of the bed, putting all his weight on his right foot. With his right hand on the chair, he slowly sat down, adjusting his aim as he went down and the next thing he knew, he was sitting in the chair.

Everyone couldn't help but clap.

Without missing a beat, Sebastian did the reverse and got himself back in to bed, no trouble at all.

"That's great Sebastian. So great. I think we're ready to send you on your way. What do you think?"

"As great as you all are, I'm ready to get the hell out of here." Everyone laughed and Dr. Singh and Laura went to round up all the paperwork.

When they left, Rylee made a bee line for Sebastian and gave him a deep kiss, taking a long moment to just breathe him in. How did I get so lucky?

She leaned back, just enough to see his eyes in focus, "excited?"

"Ehhh." He pretended to feign sadness.

She slapped him in the good arm as she laughed.

"So. I was going to wait to tell you until we got home...but... I want to warn you."

"Oh god, what?" Sebastian laughed worriedly.

"Remember a few days ago when I left for a bit?"

He nodded.

"Well. Chris and Alexa came over and...we may have flipped the apartment."

"....what does flipped mean?..." Sebastian questioned with a little bit of actual worry.

"We brought all the bedroom things downstairs and made up a little side bedroom in the living room. And your desk is downstairs too. So we can do some one floor living for a bit."

Sebastian stared at Rylee, like he couldn't quite compute what she was saying.

"You've got me worried. Should we put it back?"

"Oh. No no no. That's amazing. I'm more surprised because I didn't even think about it. I love you. Thank you for always thinking of everything." He gave her another kiss. And another. And another. Making her laugh.

A few minutes later, Dr. Singh returned and began explaining all the paperwork he came in with. Focusing on at home care, how to tend to each injury, and scheduling out the next few months of check ups and physical therapy.

And just like that, Rylee brought over the wheelchair, and Sebastian got himself into it solo. Rylee pushed him along to the nurses station to say goodbye to everyone there, he was lucky enough that Laura, Michelle, Jasmine, and even Mark were all there to see him off.

They made their way to the elevator and signed the discharge forms at the front desk. And Sebastian was officially a free man. When they got to the front lobby Sebastian was surprised to see Chris and Alexa there.

"Hey guys!" Sebastian smiled widely. "I didn't know you were coming."

"Rylee told us you were heading out, of course we had to be here." Chris said, gently bent down and hugged Sebastian, Alexa doing the same after. It was then that Sebastian noticed his car was already pulled out front.

"Chris may have valeted your car up for us." Rylee mentioned quickly.

"Too good to us man." Sebastian shook his head.

"They're gonna come over and help out a bit,"Rylee also tacked on, a little quietly, unsure if Sebastian would want the help.

"Cool." Sebastian said. It was still difficult for her to tell if he was actually "cool" with it.

Chris pushed Sebastian's wheelchair up to the passenger side of his car and let Sebastian shift and maneuver himself into the car. Chris hovered protectively over him, trying not to be overbearing. He hesitated briefly when he heard Sebastian take in a deep sharp breath, wincing when he settled into his seat.

"All good man?" Chris asked.

Sebastian gave him a steady thumbs up and tried to get comfortable.

Rylee poked her head around the door, "Hey, will you be okay if I ride back to our place with Alexa and Chris drives you?"

"Yeah, sure thing, babe." Sebastian replied. Rylee leaned over and kissed him on the cheek before she started walking back to the parking garage with Alexa.

Chris shut the door carefully and quickly pushed the wheelchair back into the hospital lobby. He lightly jogged back and hopped into the drivers seat, "you ready?"

"More than." Sebastian answered.

And with that, Chris slowly pulled away from the hospital and joined the heavy New York traffic.
