《Actions Speak Louder Than Fortune Cookies》54 - Waiting

Rylee stood there in shock.
"H-he's what?" She had just spoken to him that afternoon. It didn't seem possible. But Chris wouldn't fuck with me like that... She thought.
"There was an accident on set...something with faulty stunt wires. I'm not sure. But he fell like 25 feet straight to the ground...no mats. He got knocked out cold. I don't even know what all he broke, Ry. It was bad." Chris ran his hands through his hair roughly.
"I-I-i ...Chris. W-what?" Rylee couldn't move. She was still stuck on the "accident" sentence. She still had the bat in her hand but her grip loosened and it dropped to the floor, causing a long echoing clang off the hardwood floor.
"I know. I still can't fully grasp it. But our driver, Jeff, is downstairs and can drive us to the hospital."
"I-uh okay." Rylee stammered. Her breathing picked up quickly as she stared at Chris, still unable to move.
Chris put a hand on either one of Rylee's shoulders, and when she didn't seem to register his touch, he put his hands on either side of her face, turning her to face him, she looked frozen. "Ry take a second and breathe." He could feel her panic rushing through her, blood pumping, and he wasn't sure if he could bring her down from a panic attack right now. Not with his own heart beating a mile a minute.
He took this time to breathe with Rylee himself. He kept his hands on her face, a way to keep her and him grounded together as they took deep breaths in and out.
After a minute or so, he could already tell that both their hearts had slowed down tremendously. "Okay, Ry. Can you grab what you need and meet me down at the car?"
Rylee nodded and quickly grabbed up a few items, mainly her cellphone, and the small emergency booklet she kept in the office desk that contained medical info for both her and Sebastian. She was unbelievably grateful at this point that they had filled out this book a few weeks ago, just in case of an emergency.
She took these items and one of Sebastian's favorite hoodies and practically ran down to the car parked right out front. She wasn't sure why she grabbed his hoodie, but she felt like she needed to.
Jeff pulled up to the front of the emergency entrance and Chris and Rylee both hopped out of the back quickly, running through the rain, making a beeline through the electronic sliding doors.
They were about to walk up to the nurses station, shoes squeaking on the tile floor beneath their feet, when they heard Anthony to their right, "Chris, Rylee."
"Hey, thank you for riding here with him." Chris said as he hugged Anthony quickly.
Rylee stood silently beside Chris unsure what to do or say. She stared at a painting on the wall of a field of flowers and mountains. She took in how the flowers slowly led towards a river that wound its way into the mountainside. There were small pine trees planted throughout and the sun was setting behind the mountain. She wondered why they chose this painting. Was it symbolic? Was it just something in a catalog? Did someone they know make it? If they—
"Rylee?" Anthony questioned, putting his hands on either of her shoulders, waiting for her to respond to his touch. He noticed her hazel eyes drift slowly from the painting to meet his brown ones and then pulled her in for a hug.

Rylee embraced him tightly in return, afraid to let go, like she'd float away. Her tears weren't quite falling yet, but they were about to. "What happened Anthony?" She wasn't sure why she asked. Chris had already told her. She couldn't focus anyway. Where was Sebastian?
Chris just shook his head at Anthony, they both knew she didn't really mean to ask again, shes just in anxiety-filled shock. Anthony separated himself from her and guided Rylee to a chair to sit down in the waiting room that they've been standing in. As she sat down, she put all the things she brought into her lap and Anthony sat beside her, holding her left hand, and Chris sat down, taking her right hand in his.
She was thankful for the two men on either side of her, grounding her. She was still at a loss for words, her mind was racing.
She wasn't sure how long they sat there, waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
And waiting.
Finally, a doctor came into the near empty waiting room and Chris and Anthony stood up. Rylee stayed seated but stared up at the doctor, who introduced himself as Dr. Singh, trying to process what he was saying.
"...Left leg broken in three places...four broken ribs...punctured lung...dislocated left shoulder..." when was he going to stop listing things? Rylee thought to herself. Please stop.
She missed the last few things he said, lost in her own thoughts. Chris brought her back to reality when he asked "can anyone go see him?"
Dr. Singh apologized and said only one person could go back, because he was still under a heavy sedative.
Both Chris and Anthony looked at Rylee questioningly, both wondering if she was up for seeing him. She nodded solemnly without even being asked and stood up from her spot, cradling the items she brought in her hands. Chris squeezed Rylee's arm, trying to send her some comfort before she walked away. The doctor nodded and led the way through the double doors leading to the ICU.
Rylee stopped in the doorway as Dr. Singh escorted her into the room. He walked around the bed where Sebastian lay sleeping. A single tear rolled down Rylee's cheek at the sight.
Tubes and IVs seemed to flow every direction. Beeps echoing from the machines along the empty white walls. His torso was bare but bandaged and wrapped on his left side above his hip clear to his arm, his left shoulder wrapped tight as well, holding his arm in place across his abdomen. His right wrist covered in a splint. He had a cast on his left leg up to his knee, propped with a fluffy white pillow.
And his face...oh his poor, poor face.
He had a nasal cannula laying across his cheeks and looping behind his ears and under his chin. He had a black eye from an orbital fracture and he had so many small cuts across his cheek, almost like minor road rash.
It was obvious upon seeming him that he had mainly fallen onto his left side, most of that side taking the brunt force of the fall. Rylee's head was spinning, she sat down in the chair by his bedside just so she wouldn't fall down or throw up, whichever came first.
"Are you alright, Ms. Summers?" Dr. Singh asked, hovering near her to make sure she was okay. "I know this is a lot."
Rylee nodded quickly, immediately diving into all the questions she had.
"What exactly happened?"
"His company told our paramedics that he was strapped into some stunt wiring for a shot that ended up being faulty. Something snapped and he fell 20-25 feet straight down onto the concrete floor. He fell mainly onto his left side, so that's where most of his injuries occurred.

"And what were his injuries again? I'm sorry. It's just been...a lot of information at once today." She had now become much more stoic, taking out her emergency notebook and preparing to write down any and all information.
"It's completely fine Ms. Summers." Dr. Singh flipped through Sebastian's chart and listed off his ailments:
- unconscious on arrival
- left leg fractured in three places
- four broken ribs
- fractured orbital socket
- dislocated jaw
- punctured lung
- low oxygen levels caused by the above
- dislocated left shoulder
- sprained wrist
"Quite honestly, Ms. Summers, this all sounds like a lot, but Mr. Stan is very lucky. This could've been far worse. We were amazed that he had no spinal injuries or extensive nerve damage." Dr. Singh spoke confidently.
Rylee nodded sadly. "What does his recovery time look like?"
Dr. Singh thought for a moment, "Hmm. Well it partially depends on how he's feeling once the sedatives wear off. A lot of these injuries will take six to eight weeks to fully heal. Some more, some less. He won't have to be under our care for the entirety of that time. But he'll be here at least another week or two so we can monitor him for any changes."
Rylee nodded again. She had continued writing most of what Dr. Singh said into the small notebook.
"What's his outcome look like?" Rylee questioned.
"That still depends on when he wakes up. Most of these injuries aren't life changing or threatening, but we can never be too sure, especially when we don't know if his head made contact with the ground, and if it did, how hard. A TBI could have occurred."
"TBI?" Rylee asked, pausing as she wrote.
"Traumatic Brain Injury. These happen in many different kinds of accidents and can be a wide severity."
"Is there a predicted time that he'll wake up?"
"Not necessarily. His sedative will probably begin wearing off in four or five hours but he could wait longer to wake up. Sleep is a huge help in cases like this."
Rylee nodded, "Is there anything I can do to help him in the meantime?"
"I'm always a big supporter of just sitting and talking with patients. Most people just think that about coma patients, but I think it's beneficial for everyone."
"Would you like me to relay any information to your friends in the waiting room?" Dr. Singh asked gently.
"No, I'll go talk to them and then come back, thank you though."
"Alright then, well if you have any more questions feel free to ask, I will be back in a few hours to check in, but he has nurses coming through every 30-45 minutes." Dr. Singh responded.
"Thank you so much Dr. Singh," Rylee stated as she stuck her hand out to shake his.
"We'll see you in a bit," he said as he left the room, closing the door behind him.
Rylee stood there for a moment, gazing down at Sebastian, her heart aching for him. She sat her things down on the bedside table and moved closer to him, touching his hand. It was strange for her to put her hand in his and not feel him grasp it in return. She leaned forward and kissed his forehead, taking her other hand to push some of his hair back. She whispered as she stayed close, "Hey baby, I'll be right back. I've gotta go handle the boys. You know them. Always worried." She had to make the joke for herself or else she may burst into tears at any moment.
She straightened back up, grabbed her notebook, and wiped away the stray tear she didn't even notice fall. She walked out of his room, heading back the way she came from the ICU waiting room, the fluorescent lights leading the way down the bare hall.
She pushed through one side of the swinging double doors and saw Chris and Anthony immediately stand up. She also noticed that a few other cast members had shown up as well but she felt bad for forgetting most of their names. Everyone slowly worked around to hug her. The waiting room was empty of any other family waiting for other patients.
Everyone sat down as she explained what Dr. Singh had told her.
Tom Holland, the little baby angel, looked so heartbroken as Rylee read off her notes. He has such a heart of gold. "Is there anything we can do to help?"
"Sadly no, I don't think there's anything to do right now but wait. We take one step at a time at the moment and step one is waiting on him to wake up." Tom nodded sadly, but understanding.
Hayley, being the motherly figure to these boys that she was, looked around to everyone, "We should let Rylee go be with Seb. Sitting in this waiting room isn't going to help anyone." She stood up and gave Rylee another hug. "If you need anything at all, and I mean anything, call me." She wrote down her phone number on a slip of paper for her and Rylee nodded, tucking it in her pocket.
One by one, everyone hugged Rylee again and they all made their way out the door together. Chris stayed behind slightly, being the last to leave.
"Please call me when he wakes up, I don't care what time it is." Chris had a single tear stream down his cheek as he wrapped Rylee into a tight embrace. When he leaned back to look her in the eyes, she reached a thumb up to wipe away what was left of the tear.
"Of course. Thank you for everything today."
"Always, Ry. Take care of yourself. I'll stop by tomorrow." Chris kissed her forehead and turned to walk away to the group waiting in the car outside. Rylee nodded in understanding, waving a small goodbye.
She watched as the group left in the large black suburban that Jeff had been driving them around in since they got here a few months ago.
She turned around and padded back to Sebastian's room. She sat down in the chair next to his bed and eyed up the hoodie that she brought. She wasn't necessarily cold but she felt relieved when she put it on. It still smelled like him and his floral, woodsy cologne.
She scooted the chair closer to his bed and put her hand under his splinted one, gently rubbing her thumb across his knuckles.
"Hey you. So today's been pretty crazy, huh?...You just love those stunts though...I remember you telling me how excited you were that they were letting you do this stuff to get better shots on film...I think Kevin will have to lighten your load a little bit from now on..." Rylee stated, smiling as tears began to escape down her cheeks.
"Oh, Seb." She said as she laid her head down next to his hand that she was holding, looking up towards his face. "I love you so much." She waited in silence, hoping for something, but all she got was the beeps of machines in response.
She didn't realize how tired she was until that moment. She had been running on pure anxiety and adrenaline for the last few hours and now she was finally crashing full speed into a wall. She looked at the clock on the wall that read 6:02. Shit. She was supposed to work tonight. She had to call Johnny.
She pulled her phone out of her pocket and dialed his number. After three rings he answered. Rylee didn't expect it but this was the moment the tears broke through the floodgates. She watched over Sebastian as she talked about him over the phone, and the mixture of the two must have been the deal breaker for those tears.
Johnny has always been the most caring, thoughtful boss Rylee's ever had. He always went above and beyond to take care of his people. He told her to say no more and to take whatever time they needed. That was the wording that really let her emotions roll and the tears fall. He made sure she knew that it wasn't just however much time she needed, but also however much time Sebastian needed as well.
They finished their discussion, said their goodbyes, along with Johnny and the rest of the bar's well wishes, and they hung up.
She didn't realize she had been pacing while she was on the phone, so at this point she was closer to the sofa than she was the chair she was originally sitting in, so she decided to curl up on the sofa, making sure she could still see Sebastian, though almost as soon as she laid down she fell asleep.
