《Actions Speak Louder Than Fortune Cookies》10 - Black coffee and bagels

Sebastian dipped quickly into his favorite coffee shop, Round Corner Cafe. He couldn't believe how crazy the rain had gotten all of a sudden. One minute he was getting out of his car, the next he was sprinting down the block from where he parked trying not to get completely soaked in the downpour.

He wasn't out there long, but he felt drenched. Luckily he was trying to keep a low profile while leaving the gym so he had thrown on a hoodie over his cut off tank top before he left. He was surprised that even his gym shorts got drenched during his quick sprint though.

He pulled backed his soaked hood, running his hands through his hair. "Holy shit, Ken, where did that rain come from?"

"Hey Sebastian! I know right? I just said the same thing!" Ken said in reply.

"Crazy, I'm tellin yah," his New York accent bit through, "how're the kids? You said Gav's got his drivers test soon right?"

The two men continued talking as Sebastian put his money on the counter and Ken made his usual, black coffee with a splash of oat milk and an everything bagel with cream cheese. His order never took long to produce since it was so simple, but he always enjoyed chatting away with Ken as he put it together, leaning on the counter near him. He always got the scoop on what Ken's kids were up to throughout the week. He comes here pretty much every other morning when he is in town, usually after his early morning workouts, but today he changed his day up. Going to bed so late and waking up earlier than expected really threw him for a loop, so he decided to just go back to bed and forgot to set an alarm, so here he was, leaving the gym and getting coffee at 12:30 in the afternoon.

"So how long can we expect to see you around this time?" Ken asked genuinely.

"We're filming around the city for at least six or so months. So you'll definitely be seein this ugly mug for a while." Sebastian laughed, he turned away from the counter to now take in the rest of the Cafe.

He always loved how quiet and comfortable this place was. He scanned over the room and noticed a couple sitting closely together near the back, and a woman reading near the front of the shop, facing out towards the front window. Ken passed Sebastian his coffee and bagel, and Sebastian put one hand in his pocket and held up his to-go cup and bag in the other, signaling his thanks as he began to walk towards the door. "Tell the family I said hello! I'll be back soon enough." He smiled.

"See yah Seb!" Ken responded giving him a nod as he wiped the countertop.

He took a moment, looking out the front door, debating on trying to wait out the rain or make a run for it. As he turned to look out the other window he saw the woman in the armchair and paused...wait...

"Rylee?" Sebastian questioned out loud , as he really took her in. It was absolutely her. Though he was surprised to see her in a pair of black rimmed glasses. She was still as beautiful as ever. He then realized she had headphones in, so she probably didn't hear him, especially since her nose was buried in her book. She's a bookworm..That's cute..

Sebastian stepped closer, making sure he was further into her peripheral vision, and tried saying her name again with a small wave.

This time it worked as she jumped a little, but tried to hide it by taking out her earbuds at the same time.

"Oh my god, hi!" She genuinely smiled, turning her body in his direction and sticking a finger into her book to save her spot. "What are you doing here?" She asked, still surprised to see him, especially without his posse.

"I come here almost daily when I'm home. I love this place, couldn't even tell you how long it has been my number one go-to for coffee. I normally come in the morning, but I didn't get to the gym til like 11:00 today, so my daily routines a little off," he smirked.

"What a small world..this is my favorite Cafe too. And I'm also almost always here daily. Ken and Lisa just know me and my order to well, I'm stuck here for life," she laughed.

He held up his bag and said "I know, right? Same." He laughed back.

"Would you like to join me? I mean, if you don't have to run off too soon." She pointed at his to-go bag.

"Sure, as long as I'm not imposing on a good book." His heart beat double time at the invite. He wasn't expecting to stay today but he quickly realized how much he had wanted to when he first saw her sitting there.

Rylee held up her copy of 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak. It was well loved with plenty of dog ears, tears, highlights and notes. It was one of her favorites and she considered it one of her comfort books. "I've read it once or twice. I think I can put it down for an afternoon," she winked.

Sebastian took that as his official invitation and took a seat in the armchair opposite her, setting his bag on the table in front of them. He sat forward and pulled his wet hoodie off over his head, his shirt underneath tangling slightly getting pulled halfway up with it, baring his abs momentarily before he finished pulling it off and adjusting it. This didn't go unnoticed by Rylee, who may have snuck an accidental peek when his face was covered.

As he finished taking it off, he ran his fingers back through his hair hoping to fix it, "That rain came outta nowhere. Did you get stuck in it at all?"

"No, luckily. I've been here for a half hour or so, so I beat it but I'm really hoping it ends soon. Because I walked here and I'm not looking forward to the walk home." She pushed her hair behind her ear and out of her face.

"Well if it doesn't, I'd gladly drive you home." Sebastian tacked on quietly, taking a drink of his coffee.

"Well then here's hoping it keeps on pouring." She smiled into her cup, surprised by her own comment. She never flirted this much. What is wrong with me.

The rain continued to pour as they got comfortable in their chairs by the window, watching drops roll down the glass, breaking apart the condensation at the bottom. They sat together, sipping their coffee, and eating their baked goods as they made easy small talk with one another. It was just like their phone call, Rylee remembered quickly that it had just been earlier that day, though it didn't feel like it. She enjoyed talking to him and hoped he did as much as her.

As they finished their food and drink, Rylee realized that she still had her biscotti that Ken had given her. She snapped it in half with a delightful crunch and offered half to Sebastian. He smiled and thanked her taking it from her hand, brushing her fingers lightly as he went. It sent a spark through both of them at once. He stuck his biscotti back out as if to cheers with it, and Rylee tapped hers to his with a giggle and took a bite as he did the same.

Rylee's phone vibrated in her pocket, so she took it out to look at her notification. While doing so, she caught a glimpse of the time.

"Oh wow, it's already 2:30! Ugh, I'm supposed to be meeting up with Alexa at 3:00."

She wouldn't admit it out loud but she absolutely would've canceled on Alexa in a heartbeat. She would understand. As she debated this, Sebastian stood up from his chair, offering her a hand, "Well then, we better get scootin." Sebastian smiled at her.

She nodded, taking his hand and rising from her chair as well.

They didn't have to look out the window to know it was still pouring outside, they could hear it pounding on the roof. Before Rylee could say anything, Sebastian looked into her hazel eyes and said, "My offer still stands. My cars a block down. I insist."

Rylee nodded, accepting his offer, but she looked perplexed, trying to decide what her next move was. Sebastian said his car was a block down. Even if it wasn't that far she would still probably get soaked on the way. She was ready to accept her fate when his hand reached out towards her, offering her his hoodie.

She was about to tell him that no, he should wear it but he read her mind and said.

"Again, I insist. No need for both of us to get pneumonia. I've already been soaked to the bone once today, what's once more?" He cracked a smile.

She laughed, rolling her eyes but taking his now almost dry hoodie and pulling it on. She pretty much swam in it but Sebastian looked her up and down with a smirk and said "Looks great."

When they got right outside the door under the awning, he spoke up over the pounding rain, describing his black Jaguar F-Type. He pointed down the street in its direction, so she knew where she was running. She looked down the block and saw it, parked not too far away. She nodded and pulled the hood over her head, tucking her hair in, prepping to book it.

"Alright...ready? 3, 2, 1. GO!" Sebastian yelled with a laugh as they began their run to the car.

It took almost a solid minute to get there, both laughing every second of the way. Rylee had to hold the hood down as she went since it was three sizes too big which made their run even funnier. As they got closer Sebastian unlocked the doors and they leapt into either side of the coupe. As they shut their doors they both looked at each other and laughed again. They probably looked crazy.

As their laughs died down, Rylee began to think about the fact that, oh shit, Sebastian was about to see where she lived. She couldn't recall ever having a guy take her home that she wasn't already in some kind of a relationship with. So it felt strange. She tried to shrug it off and enjoy the last few moments of their time together in the car.

She slowly gave directions as they went. Since he was facing west when he parked, it took a smidge longer to get to her house because he had to get turned around and a handful of the one way streets he needed were closed. He didn't mind though, and honestly neither did she. They continued to talk on the drive back, continuing their conversation from the cafe, learning more and more about one another.

Eventually about 15 minutes later, he pulled up right in front of her apartment doors and put the car in park.

"Today was really nice." Rylee stated simply, looking to the floor and then bringing her hazel eyes back up to look at Sebastian's blue ones. God were they gorgeous.

"It was. Honestly my day started out great and so far it's still not going to shabby...there's not too many people I'll answer a 5:00 am phone call for." He winked as he finished his sentence.

"Hey, you could've ignored my texts. " she put her hands up in joking defense, "I wouldn't have been offended. You could've slept. Had your normal day.." Rylee started to list.

"Well..I'm glad I didn't. Otherwise, today wouldn't have spanned out the way it did. And I wouldn't wanna change a thing." Sebastian replied honestly.

Rylee smiled and said "I'm really glad I started my day late too. Thank you for the company today...and the ride. Oh, and here, thank you for your hoodie-" she started to reach to take it off but his hand landed on hers, stopping her. There's that spark again..

"You keep it for now. You need to run to your building anyway...plus..it gives me a reason to come back...maybe tomorrow around eight..I'll grab that hoodie...and maybe do dinner?" He started his sentence confidently, but seemed to become shyer as he spoke, rubbing the back of his neck.

"That sounds great." She smiled back, trying not to squeal from her excitement. "I'll see you at eight then."

"Great. Bye, Rylee." Sebastian responded, seemingly giddy.

At that, she opened the car door, looked at him and said, "Bye, Sebastian." Before shutting it. She jogged the short distance to her apartment building's door, where her doorman quickly buzzed her in. Sebastian made sure to wait outside until he saw her walk in, and then he pulled away, into the dreary New York afternoon traffic.
