《postponing forever》chapter 28

Rachel waited nervously for her parents to arrive from the airport. They were due over any minute now and she wasn’t sure what she was going to do or say when they got there.
Finn and Isabel had actually left earlier in the day to pick their own parents up from the airport so not only did she finally have to face her parent she had to do it alone. Finn said he would get back as quickly as he could but she knew what his mother could be like, especially when she hadn’t seen him in close to six months.
When the knock came at the door she jumped “Shit” she said. Walking to the door she opened it and found her parents waiting on the other side.
“Hi sweetie” her father smiled but when he stepped forward to hug her Rachel found herself taking a step back and avoiding it.
“Hi baby” her mother said.
“Hi” she said to both of them.
She walked into the kitchen and they followed her. Placing out the tea and cake she had made for their arrival she joined them at the table and poured some tea into each of their cups and some into her own to calm her nerves..
“Is everything ok, Rachel?” her mother finally asked. She had spoken to her dad a couple of times since she had confronted them with the truth but the conversation has been mostly about their plans for coming for graduation. But apparently her mother believed that the whole thing had blown over by now, typical of her mother she thought.
“No it’s not” she said “I think we need to talk” she told them.
Her father reached out and took her hand “I know your upset with us but if you would let us explain we would appreciate it” he said.
Rachel nodded. She knew nothing they would say would make up for what they had done but the least she owned them was the chance to hear their side of things before she told them how much she hated them for what they had done. In truth she didn’t know if she was going to be able to get past this. She knew in time she would forgive them but she didn’t think she would ever trust them again.
“Rachel you have to understand that when Finn came to us and asked for permission to marry you we were a little shocked. We weren’t really aware that the two of you were dating” he said.
“You knew about our relationship” she objected “the reason we never dated seriously in high school was because you wouldn’t allow it” she said unhappily.
“Rachel the two of your were barely 18 years old. It was a ridiculous idea and I wont apologise for squashing it” her mother spoke up.

Rachel had never had a close relationship with her mother, she had always been cold in comparison to her father and she could never understand why. She had heard Maria and Isabel talk about all the girly chats and shopping trips that they had with their mothers while growing up but none of that ever occurred between Rachel and her mother.
“Well I don’t care what you think mother, the fact is that you had no right to make decisions about my life without talking to me about it. For a long time I’ve let you and Dad dictate my life and I’m done” Rachel says her voice raising.
“Finn and I love each other and what you did was unforgivable. We are responsible adults and always have been. If I wanted to marry Finn I should have been able to, at the very least I should have been given the opportunity to decide for myself.”
“What and give up all your dreams?” her mother yelled. The one thing Rachel could not understand is why her parents thought it was one or the other her dreams for a successful career or Finn. Why did she have to give up her dreams to be with Finn?, plenty of people their age were married and happy.
“They were my dreams to give up if that’s what I wanted. Not yours and not Dads, mine, you took the one thing I wanted most in the world away from me” she stood up and yelled at her mother “Do you have any idea what this has done to us?” she asked looking between her mother and father.
“Yes, you have excellent grades will have a promising career and have met a lot of lovely people. You now see that Finn Hudson isn’t the only boy for you” her mother said.
“No” she roared, “that’s where you’re wrong, he’s still the only person I’ve ever loved and he’s still the man I’m going to spend the rest of my life with. All you’ve done is put the two of us through hell. He’s kept this from me for four years” she cried.
“Four years where I’ve been miserable without him because he didn’t want to make me choose between you and him, he didn’t want to go against your wishes. Finn Hudson is the only boy in my world mother and he always has been”
“Oh Rachel” Jeff sighed “We thought we were doing the right thing, you were too young to think about marriage and how were we supposed to know that what the two of you had wasn’t just some high school lust” he said.
“You could have asked,” she cried. “You have never cared about what I wanted” she shook her head then. “This is just like Harvard all over again” she cried.

“We just want what’s best for you, Rachel” her mother said. “You’ll see that eventually, we’re sorry that things didn’t work out with Finn but that’s precisely the reason we did what we did to begin with” she told her.
“Didn’t work out?” Rachel looked at her mother. “You think Finn and I are going to let you win?” she said then.
The look on her mothers face was enough to make her laugh. “All you’ve done Mum is delay the inevitable and make your only daughter bitter with you”
“Oh god Rachel please don’t say that” her father begged “We love you so much sweetie and we might have made a huge mistake but we have always had your best interests at heart. You might not think that you would have regretted it but you would have sweetie” he told her.
“No” Rachel shook her head “why do you just assume that I would have had to give up my dreams to be with, Finn. No one in my life is as supportive of my dreams as Finn. Did you know that he’s willing to follow me to whatever city for whatever job I choose? That he doesn’t care if he has to work for Legal Aid as long as he’s with me.”
“God he’s even willing to move to Europe with me where he might not even be able to practise law because he loves me. He’s the most selfless, sweetest guy in the world and he loves me, he’s wants to spend the rest of his life with me so you tell me how I could have ever regretted something like that” Rachel was openly crying now and her parents were sitting at the table with their heads down in shame.
Finn had walked into the apartment unnoticed a few minutes earlier but it was long enough for him to catch her speech and he was absolutely astounded in how much faith she had in him. After everything he had put her through she still fought for him and it made him love her even more if possible.
When Rachel finally looked up her eyes locked with Finn and he smile his brilliant smile at her and she quickly rushed into his waiting arms.
“I love you,” he whispered.
The Berry's watched on in awe at the gentle way Finn handled their daughter and the shame they felt from their daughters words only increased.
“Mr Berry, Mrs Berry” Finn nodded in their direction.
“Hi Finn” they said.
Rachel pulled back “Come sit down,” she told him. She gave him a piece of the chocolate cake she made yesterday and he sat and ate it.
“Happy to be graduating?” Jeff Berry asked trying to break the tense silence.
“Yeah” Finn replied.
“And have the two of you decided what you’re going to do after graduation?” Nancy Berry finally asked.
Finn reached over and took Rachel's hand in a show of support which didn’t go unnoticed by the Berry's “We’ve decided to move to Boston” she answered. It has been a hard decision but in the end they both knew it was the right one.
“Was that your best job offer?” Jeff asked. He was a little disappointed Rachel hadn’t confided in him or asked his advice but he realised now his little girl wasn’t so little anymore.
“Not necessarily” Rachel admitted.
“Then why are you taking it?” Nancy asked.
“Because it’s a good job offer that comes with a very good salary package and Finn got a very good offer from a firm in Boston too” she said.
“Didn’t you just finish telling us that Finn was willing to go wherever you picked, so why are you now telling us that you didn’t pick the best job?” Nancy asked angrily.
Rachel tensed “Because maybe I don’t want this relationship to just be about me. Maybe I care about Finn's career prospects, Mother,” she snapped.
Finn could tell the situation was close to getting out of control again so stepped in. “Mrs Berry the job Rachel has taken is an excellent job, the money and hours were a lot better in comparison to some of the others and the opportunity for advancement is promising. Sure there were jobs Rachel could have picked that offered her more scientific recognition but that wasn’t important to her” he said.
“I could have gone half way around the world would that have suited you better,” she snapped at her mother causing her to flinch.
“That’s enough Rachel,” her father said.
“No it’s not. You can’t come here and challenge my choice and not expect me to be pissed,” she told her father.
“Finn has been offered an extraordinary opportunity. We wont have to pay rent and he will make enough money that he’s willing to support me if I want to go back to school and do my doctorate” she said.
“We’re more than happy with the decision we’ve made and you just need to accept that” she said.
“We just want you to be happy, you’ve worked so hard sweetie,” her father said.
“Congratulations, Finn obviously you’ve been working very hard too” he acknowledged.
“Thank you” Finn said.
“Your father is right” Nancy Berry said, “We only want what’s best for you, Rachel” her mother sighed. She wasn’t happy with her daughters decision, she personally believed that Rachel was seeling out her dreams to be with Finn and that upset her, on the other hand she wasn’t eager for her daughter to go to Europe so she kept her mouth shut.
“Well then trust that I know what that is,” she told them and they both nodded. It was time to accept the fact that Rachel was a grown women and she didn’t need them anymore.

The Depths of Magic
Synopsis It's the year 2052 and the release of the new next-generation full-dive VRMMO game called The Depths of Magic is hitting the world by storm. The game's technology will surpass all other games before it and shock the masses. Hector who goes by the name Locke inside the game is an experienced player of the genre. He is looking to continue his goal of enjoying gaming as well as the competition that goes along with competing for the top ranking spots. Novel Summary The Depths of Magic is a LitRPG novel focused on a Fantasy VRMMO setting. This is not a harem novel. In-Game systems The Depths of Magic features state-of-the-art technology never before seen in Hector's world. The key system the novel will bring up often is the Second Brain. The Second Brain system is more like a guidance AI for the players in the game that acts as if you had a second brain assisting your every action. How much guidance this AI will give is based on its experience or mastery skills a player will receive in the game. The guidance is seamless to a point where a player won't even realize they are being assisted, it's will feel like what they are doing is something they could always do. However, once they leave the game it will become quite apparent that they were receiving heavy guidance. The purpose of this system in a writing sense is to explain why a player can realistically become more powerful, more agile, or more skilled than they would otherwise be able to as a human. To give an example if someone could move faster than a bullet, how would a normal human brain be able to perceive and control this movement properly. Or how could a player who has never held a sword before become as experienced as someone who has trained with the sword all their lives? The magic system will be another focus of this novel. I don't want to spoil anything here but it should be an interesting one. The hope is that the system I have made will spark discussion between the readers on what combinations will do what. I already have most of it, but it will be fun to read as the author. Side notes My general focus for this novel is to attempt to make the in-game systems make sense. To give a vague example I have read a lot of novels of this genre and some have the habit of just creating such powerful items that it just breaks the system, and somehow the MC keeps finding challenging situations even with those items. What tends to happen when I read a novel like this I just ignore the stats of the items he is getting because the numbers don't even matter anymore. Release schedule: The chapter release schedule due to real-life complications is to release as I write them. Patreon setup: 1 chapter early release/discord access. Free content up to the current chapter includes an excel sheet that contains Locke's current stats at the end of the chapter. This is extra information for those that are interested.
