Naruto appeared in front of the Nara compound. He dodged the guards and slipped into the Clan Heads House. Making his chakra he crept upstairs into Shikamaru's bedroom to find the boy facing his bed.
The door clicked shut behind Naruto and Shikamaru jumped and turned around with a fearful squeak. "K-Kitsune-sama!"
"Now." Naruto started to say, leaning against the door and folding his arms. "I know you Nara's are smart enough to know what needs to be kept quiet, yes?"
Shikamaru mouthed the word troublesome but nodded. "Absolutely. I will not tell a soul." He stood still as Naruto walked around him, poking and prodding at his body and humming occasionally. "What are you doing?"
Naruto didn't say anything but poked him a few more times. "You would be a useful strategist but your body build is definitely not much of a fighter, but then again, all Naras are lazy bastards who don't want to do even the littlest of things."
Shikamaru looked mildly offended at Narutos offhanded comment that he didn't notice his door opening. Shikaku stood in the doorway, eyes flicking between both boys just as Naruto poked him in the side "Hey!" The Nara Heir snapped.
Shikaku raised an eyebrow at Naruto. "Naruto-sama, what are you doing to my son?"
"Threatening him." Naruto poked a few more places with chakra coated fingers and the left side of Shikamaru's body went numb.
"What did he do?" Shikaku asked.
"He found out the secret."
"Which one?"
"Kitsune."
"Ah." Shikaku nodded. "Just please don't kill my son. I know what you did to the last person who found out." With that, he closed the door, leaving the horrified Shikamaru behind.
Naruto grinned evilly. "I have a deal for you."

Shikamaru started to sweat. "What is it?"
"If you keep your precious mouth shut about my identity, I will not only let you live but I will let you join my team." Naruto moved to stand in front of the other boy. "I will personally train you and you will be my lead strategist."
Shikamaru thought about that. He always did admire Kitsune's decisions as being the strategically chosen best options and respected his authority. He offhandedly found that Naruto being the Kitsune that defied Minato time and time again as a hilariously large big fat fuck you to the family. To be personally trained by the most powerful person in the five nations is to big an opportunity to pass up. The only downside is that he is sure that Naruto is sadistic when it comes to training and Shikamaru won't have as much time to cloud watch. "I...accept." Then he remembered something that could be a problem. "What about my sensei?"
Kitsune smirked. "I'll handle him." With that, he disappeared in black and gold flames.
"Troublesome. He didn't fix me. I suppose I will wait until Mom or Dad look for me. What a drag."

In a world set upon by an ancient threat, a new cycle of civilisation competes for power and resources. Amidst the games and politicking of Elder beings, the masses are unknowingly ensnared in plots and schemes that were centuries in the making. At the heart of the world’s workings lies the Tyreal Valley—a land that promises to fulfil the desires of those who seek it. As a haven for the truly strong, the path to this promise is paved more often than not in warfare and blood. To two young stragglers fighting for more than just their own fates, it is left as their only answer. But maybe that’s just what their enemies want. Magic system vaguely similar to GameLit ones (no system nor interface to help), with certain elements that are a bit more analogue. Politics, war, looming apocalypse, a tiny dash of kingdom building, and a minor bit of crafting. There is a bit of a progression element as well as both environmental and cultural exploration. The story follows two youths more directly influenced by aforementioned Elder beings than most. Neither lead cares for politics but certain situations force them into participating, forcing them to make decisions that shape their morality. Initially, the focus is on the male lead as he comes of age in an environment with little scope to change his future, only to be thrust into new circumstances that permanently kill some of his hopes. 3k words every chapter

Flashback: Siren Song
The year is 1969. Yancy Lazarus—bluesman, gambler, future world-class mage and fix-it man—is just a dumb, unlucky kid serving with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines in Vietnam. With just a few weeks left to go until Yancy gets shipped back to the States, he’s just trying to keep his head down and avoid a body bag—no mean feat in Nam. But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves. Just like the mysterious music drifting through the jungle toward Yancy's squad, Siren Song will get under your skin and sink its hooks into your mind. —eden Hudson, Author of Halo Bound (the Redneck Apocalypse series) *** Hey everyone, this is James Hunter. This story isn't a full length novel--its a novella length work (25K words), and is part of my Yancy Lazarus series.
