You came down with a smack, unable to catch yourself due to your erratic and pained behavior. Your head smacked onto the dirty wooden floorboards.
But you didn't care anymore.
You didn't care about how you looked, you didn't care about how wounded and stained you were.
You cared about one tiny thing;
And that was the glimmering, bloody key in your hand.
You squeezed a little, feeling the object in your hand was pure bliss. Your forehead was touching the ground, your gaze focused onto nothing but darkness. But you felt that damned key in your hands. You turned your head a little, hoping to get a small glance of what power you held before you...
But you stopped immediately when you heard another sound.
The ecstasy was replaced by something darker, something far worse than you could have planned out. Almost immediately you felt the power of the key being drained, as if it had no might to protect you anymore.
You heard a loud grunt of frustration.
Fear paralyzed your body as you were laying on the ground, as still as ice. Each movement could result in immediate death, each movement could be your last. You breathlessly kept still, wondering if it was just a mere trick of the mind or if the worst case scenario had really come true.
Jeff was already back into the room.
The silence sneered through the small space like a knife through a cake, the tension thickening with each moment as you kept listening for any movement, any moan of disappointment or sound of breathing.
There was none.
Your mind was still fuzzy thanks to the whole 'retrieve the key thing'. During that exact moment, your head was in a complete split over what to feel. Your brain was trembling and overflowing with emotions, as if they were displayed through each other and constantly overruling the weakest one.
You were happy but sad, angry but relieved, scared but determined. You had found the damned key, good for you. But there is also immediate danger now.
You wanted to get up, to keep down, to scream, to cry... and to keep silent.
It was as if your head was beginning to disintegrate, as if your insides were having an error which couldn't be fixed. You squeezed your eyes shut, hoping that the sound was just a mere coincidence and that everything would be fine.
But has that hoping something so fictional ever helped before?
Deciding to just face your ill fate you took a deep breath, raising your head up a little to figure out what exact danger you were in. And you saw it immediately.
Sitting on the bed, head covered by his hands, sat none other than your worst nightmare and at the same time your knight in shining armor...
Jeff.
You quickly tried to scramble up, sitting on your knees before Jeff spoke softly:
"I don't understand.... I don't fucking understand..." still squeezing the key tightly you opened your mouth to speak, but soon closed it again once you realized you had little to say to him. What would and could you possibly say now that would ease his mood? You watched him closely, afraid of what he was capable of now.
"I thought we had it figured out... I thought I had mended enough..." You pursed your lips, trying to make sense of what he was saying and above all the meaning behind it. Yet you knew, deep inside... that you had hurt him where it mattered.

"Then... WHY?" You gave a soft gasp at the last part, goosebumps raising on your skin as all the alarms turned to red in your mind. His voice was dripping with something you hadn't heard in a long time and despaired until the very end.
Something that you wished would never show up again.
Pure insanity.
You swallowed slowly, the sound being incredibly loud and almost painful to your owns ears. Fear crawled from its deepest roots back to your frame as he spoke again:
"Why... WHY?!" Without the time to even notice it, Jeff suddenly jumped up from the bed, charging straight at you without any mercy. You backed away, nearly not enough to get away from him though. With one swift movement he had lifted you up by your neck, easily slamming you against the wall with only one hand.
You immediately gasped for air. Out of reflex both of your hands clenched his, dropping the key in the process. He didn't seem to hear the cling, as he kept his attention on you and slowly etched closer with his face.
"You....you fucking piece of useless shit... You..." with each word he spoke the grip on your tender flesh tightened and the need of oxygen increased. Your legs were kicking underneath your frame, desperately hoping to get you out of this tight situation.
Jeff's anger was radiating through your skin, almost to the point it burned through you. There was so much hate in his voice, so much pure spite and agony. He didn't finish his sentence, his grip only tightened more and more.
If he would squeeze just a little harder you'd surely pass out.
He then suddenly let go of you, letting you fall to the ground as you sputtered for air. He turned his back on you, stampeding around and kicking everything on his path away. His eyes stood damned and full of fire.
You hand rubbed your sore neck soothingly, eyes quickly shifting from the killer towards the small object on the ground. Without Jeff noticing you quickly snatched it off of the floor, cradling the key like something so precious. You then crawled up, your broken hand throbbing painfully with each heartbeat. This all while watching the ticking time bomb intently, wondering what was going on with him. Of course you knew damn well why he was angry with you, why he attacked you like that.
You had again done one of the few things he absolutely forbade you to do, and for a reason he would despise you even more for. You just hoped that his obsession for you took the upper hand and that his bucket wasn't empty yet.
You opened your mouth to say something however no sound was produced. You coughed again watching Jeff stomping around like an angered bull. A small pinch in your hand reminded you of the power that was in your possession and you proudly straightened your back for another round of defiance.
As if he felt the rising of power he turned to you, eyes darker than you had ever seen before. He was truly mad.
"What... were you doing?" each word was sputtered with such hatred, such malice and even slight confusion as he stared straight at you. If you didn't have that one piece of power in your hand then you would've shrunken to the size of an ant.

His eyes...
You cleared your throat, trying to find the correct usage of words for this particular event. However as soon as you had thought about it you immediately shut your jab again.
How would you describe that you, against all orders of Jeff, had yet again endangered yourself beyond thinking to find something that you had yelled you didn't know where it was. You cried like a little baby then, screaming at Jeff that there was nothing more to fear, you didn't know.
But you did know.
How big of a fucking treason could this be? Would you honestly think that Jeff would believe your sudden clearance of the mind even if it was the truth? Would he believe that you suddenly remembered something so fucking important and above all, retrieve it on a corpse they thought was worthless?
How much more could you have embarrassed them than you already have now?
So you did the only thing what you were best at:
Keeping silent.
As if Jeff saw your inner struggle, you felt him becoming more enraged. He knew you were purposely hiding all information you had and this fueled his hatred to the core. Without even looking at him, you turned your head to the side unable to face his wrath.
You saw it coming. You saw how his pale hand smacked against your face and by the force you were knocked backwards and stumbled down. Your hand immediately gripped the stung skin yet you didn't face him with anger or astonishment.
Instead you kept looking at the floorboards underneath you. That hit was one you had deserved. Not only for disobedience but purely because you kept stretching his limits to the max. You wouldn't be surprised if you had pushed his last button.
Jeff now towered over you like a shadow, like an abomination of darkness. A wraith which has crawled from the depths of the earth only to haunt you.
You could almost hear him gasping, being filled to the brim with pure animosity. He bent down towards your cowering form, his arms resting on his legs as he closely breathed out to you:
"IF you EVER think that you have any power to escape me then you're wrong. You will never escape my hands. I will kill you before you even have another chance and I will make it slow. PAINFULLY slow."
You kept silent, slightly squeezing the key and in complete turmoil if you should tell Jeff or not.
"Why are you even trying? It's useless (Y/n) I'm not going to let you leave."
Suddenly, a flash befell for your eyes and you were back at your house. Walking in to the kitchen, being greeted by warmth, the smell of food and the sounds of laughter. As you entered you were surprised by a sudden kiss, the mark where the lips had been burning pleasantly on your skin. A glass was pushed in your hand and cheerful conversation filled your ears.
The smell of freshly baked cake, the happiness searing into your skin as your mind was utterly content and completely at peace. Just like old days, no care in the world.
Happiness seared through you like blood and your heart was warmed by the familiar faces. Their smiles eased your wounds and swallowed all the darkness surrounding you.
And as the smiling faces faded one for one making place for the face of terror and gloom, you still remembered what you had fought for. What kept you going until it was the only thing left in your mind during the darkest periods.
Feeling hopeful and almost completely refreshed again you did the one thing he had never expected of you.
A loud and cheerful laugh was breathed out as the fear made place for something far more pleasant. And so you sat there, laughing loudly as the demented killer before you threatened to kill you and slice you into pieces.
As if afraid of the sound Jeff quickly stood up staring at you with utter horror and confusion.
You quickly bit your tongue, eyes almost daringly staring up at the murderer with a renewed and strong fashion.
"My friends are still in here somewhere." You started seeing the face of each one of them flashing by. You gave no attention to care, luck or timing anymore.
"I will never stop trying until I know they are free and safe." Jeff's face contorted into an expression you hadn't seen before during the entire time you had spent with him. It could hardly be described, but if there were words for it you could say he was scared.
As if the mighty Jeff the killer, inhuman being and murderer of many could be scared of anything.
He had not been expecting this, not expected this power and will to prevail over his constant whispering of darkness. As if he knew he was losing you out of his grasp, as if he now realized that the torturing had only strengthened you instead of weakening you.
As if he knew that he had made a huge mistake and wouldn't succeed by following this road anymore.
He stared at you in silence for a while, pondering over your behavior and what you had said. His fists were clenched tightly and through his closed mouth you could hear his teeth grinding together. He hates you now, he despises you.
But it was all because he knew you were right.
He knows exactly that you would never stop struggling unless those 'pieces of filth' are completely out of your life.
And on that note, with a voice filled with venom, he growled lowly:
"Fine. I'll free your friends."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hullo, sorry I'm late again but nothing too unexpected.
My apologies for any spelling or grammar errors. I'm on a holiday now and I'm writing all this on my phone. Although it is a new and good phone it still is way more annoying and time consuming than my laptop. I might have missed some words or errors, forgive me for that then.
When I'm home I'll re-read it.
The next update will be... I don't know. I hoped that this one would be quick but it wasn't. I'm such a joker.
What do you think? Will Jeff really free our friends? Probably... Not 😋
Have a terrific day darlings.
Devil's Basement: Colony Ragnarok
Far beneath the surface of a planet wrapped in a toxic atmosphere, competing political ideologies stare each other down over a heavily militarised line that cuts through the city on their border. Among the dark rail tunnels and mine shafts are an unfinished treaty up for negotiation; a fanatical terrorist group with questionable backers; and ordinary people caught in the middle. In this claustrophobic environment, those who desire peace must act quickly or these tunnels will collapse in the fires of war. _____ This story is based on a role-playing map game I GM'd awhile ago. The four main characters are based on the four players from that map game, and the general sequence of events follows the game as well. The Tears of Kas̆dael
It was just supposed to be a game. A really, really great game, yes - but a game. Instead, Jasper got his heart ripped out by a brooding goddess and awoke to find himself in another world. No weapons, no skills. Naked. Trapped in a world full of ancient horrors, where gods and monsters still roam the earth, Jasper is forced to adapt quickly or die - and he's not ready to die. Good thing he's a mage. This is a high-fantasy novel with light LitRPG elements. It's not super-crunchy, but the system is an important part of the story. There is some light cursing and gore, but this is not a Grimdark novel. There will also be no harem. The current schedule is chapters on M-W-F of around 2000-2500 words, as well as occasional bonus chapters that provide background or insights into side characters. This is my first real attempt at writing a full novel, but the story is based on a world that I've been creating and re-creating since I was a child. I have an extensive "history" and religion, and even a semi-cohesive language system worked out, which will hopefully slowly shine through as the story progresses. I want to avoid having too many info-dumps, so I may from time to time post a bonus lore chapter that will explain some of the background for any who are interested.
