Note:
This chapter contains vulgar language and slight gore, be prepared!
In the last chapter (Chapter 71, She's here) You could choose whether to shut the door or help the little girl. If you didn't choose just yet then go back to chapter 71 and choose.
If you did pick your decision then consider all of the above not written and go on with the story!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You couldn't...
You fucking couldn't let the girl be.
Sure it was strange that she was popping up so much... Showing herself in your dreams, showing herself right outside your door now... But who says that's a bad thing? Who says that it isn't meant to be?
Maybe she IS indeed someone who belongs to this house... But she could very well be someone who has been trapped. Someone who has been kidnapped and used, just like you are. Maybe she was deliberately trying to get your attention, trying to get your focus on her so that she could tell you something.
Something important, something regarding a way out. Merely the thought of this made your heart well up, your cheeks getting warmer as your eyes widened. You know you were getting ahead of yourself, you were thinking way out of line on this one.
Maybe this was indeed all a trap. Maybe she was the bait of some killer, trying to lure you out by playing with your mind and consciousness. Trying to get his filthy hands on you in order to rip you open and feed your intestines to the wolves...
You could almost smack yourself on the head for thinking these stupid thoughts. Thinking that some strange, brown haired girl would be popping up out of nowhere without any malice intent towards you.
But you just couldn't let go of the possibility that this meant something. That this was your destination, that SHE was your destination. Your only ticket out.
Was that really a foolish thought? Or just an extremely naïve one?
The sniffing once again filled your ears as you were still glued to the door. You were contemplating what to do... But secretly your heart had already decided. If it wasn't for the mere thinking that this child would be your key out, then save her because she is a child.
The soft sobs made their way through your eardrums, crawling inside your head and tugging on your brain. There is a fucking young child crying outside of the corridor, probably attracting tons of killers. How could you possibly ignore that?
How could you allow yourself to turn around, let the child be and contribute to torture and maybe even rape?! There was no doubt these sick fucks would be up for doing things like that to children. They feel nothing but lust for blood, hunger for death.
Mercy is not in their dictionary, even when it's combined to child.
What kind of sick fuck would kidnap a child and then abuse the poor thing anyway? Only monsters like these guys could do such a thing. You couldn't get over the fact that you were contemplating to turning your back on a mere child. Was this really who you have become?
Being so self-centered and focused on your OWN survival that you would ignore someone in need?
Yes, it was.
You had every reason to do it, every excuse to say that you didn't want to help. You're in a terrible situation as you are now, and you know for certain that Jeff would only make it ten times worse when he would lay his eyes onto the little girl.
You had every right to say no, to keep the door shut and ignore her...
Yet you couldn't do it. You couldn't pretend like nothing happened, like you saw nothing. Your heart has taking slam by slam by fucking slam. It could only take so much more before it would totally collapse and to be honest, that would almost feel like bliss.
But you weren't ready to let it give in just yet.
You needed to save the girl... Or at least get her out of plain sight. You would decide on what to do next if you got her in this room. But first and most importantly was to get out there and show some fucking balls.
If they wanted a fight, then you would give them a fight. You'd rather die like yourself, holding on to your own morals than die like a puppet they created.
Taking in a deep breath you steadied yourself. Constantly thinking over the possibilities that she was just a regular girl and that it wasn't some trap, you turned around. Your hand clamped around the doorknob, your grip sweaty and uncertain.
Staring at the wooden portal you let yourself be filled with one last ounce of doubt.
What IF she was something sinister?
Then you died doing the right thing, trying to save a little girl. This wasn't the first time that you've escaped from a killer either, who says that you won't now?
But those are all scenarios if she would be a killer, if Jeff was right.
But he isn't.
Swallowing the saliva in your mouth you closed your eyes as you turned the doorknob. Your heart was ramming against your ribcage and you just couldn't bear to look. Hearing the soft creak of the door made you peek through your eyelids, opening the door further and further.
For some reason, you were half expecting someone to jump at you, some weird killer standing next at the door and eagerly waiting to get his hands on you. However, it never came, only the sound of sobbing disturbing mere silence was heard.
You realized you were holding your breath and you quickly released it without making too much sound. It might trigger someone...
You opened the door completely, being once again greeted by the yellow light shining through the doorframe. You really hated this hallway with your whole heart. The sobbing intensified, but it didn't stop even though you were sure she heard the door.
You slowly peeked outside, right in the direction of the girl. You were checking if she was still there, even though you heard her sobs loud and clearly. This mansion does strange things to your mind, it wouldn't surprise you if everything was just a trick, a hallucination in the end.
The girl, however, was still sitting on the floor. Having overcome the shock, you now had time to study her a little closer, to seep in her appearance. Her pink... Well, pink with brown, green and other filthy colored dress seemed ripped a little.
Her brown hair was tangled, clearly not brushed for weeks, maybe even months. You saw that her arms were going up to her face, probably trying to dry some tears of all the crying. Her skin was unnaturally white and it seemed as if she was mere bone.
Not an ounce of fat or muscles, just bone...
You couldn't even imagine what her face must look like, how horrible this child had been tainted. Biting your lip you slowly took one step outside of the room, eyes frantically searching around for anything out of the ordinary.
You were ready to just jump into the room and slam the door shut.
You decided to take slow, quiet steps towards the young girl. Even though you had tried to get rid of those thoughts of this girl being a killer, you couldn't deny that a careful approach would be the best thing to do, even if that meant being exposed longer.
The girl kept on sobbing, clearly not noticing you coming closer and closer. Your eyes were locked onto her frame, getting more detailed information about her state with every step you took. You saw the cuts on her skin.
You saw the leaves in her hair, the dirt on her dress, the bruising on her arms.
You were almost certain that this girl couldn't be a killer now, this girl was definitely a victim. Just look at her state!
Your steps now became less careful, going faster in order to comfort the girl, in order to get her somewhere safe and out of this hallway. She kept on sobbing, even though your footsteps were clearly audible.
You couldn't keep your eyes off her frame, the need to get to her grew bigger with every step you took. You needed to comfort her, you needed to care for her...
You needed to save the little girl...
By now you noticed you were panting, coming closer and closer towards the young child. Your hand was stretched out, ready to grab her and run away. Ready to feel the warmth of her skin against your own.
She didn't stop crying and the sobs were only getting louder. Only tearing more of your brain out, only ripping more of your heart tissue apart than it did before. It needed to stop, she needed to stop!
Almost faltering over your last step you reached out for the girl. Grabbing her shoulder and shaking her almost roughly as you spoke the words:
"We need to get out of here."
Time then looked like it was frozen, as if it was going in slow-motion. Her hands hung loosely to the sides, and her crying had stopped, just like in your dream. She didn't turn around, she didn't seem shocked somebody touched her...
Her head just hung loosely, looking down as if she knew she was dead already, as if she knew she was doomed... Gone.
You opened your mouth, wanting to say something, wanting to pull her to your room forcefully but somehow you couldn't move an inch. You were glued to this girl, glued to this scene. She didn't move and so did you...
It was like a living portrait.
Minutes... No... Hours seemed to pass before the young girl finally did something, before the child finally seemed to move. Her head was bobbing up and down again as her shoulders began to shake. Eyes widening with confusion you managed to shake yourself out of the trance she had brought upon you.
You quickly let go of her, taking a step back as you watched the scene unfold before your own eyes. The young girl's shoulders started shaking even more and a soft sound was coming from her mouth.
You breathlessly listened to it, thinking it would be sobs again, cries or even pleads....
But listening more closely you realized it was something entirely different. Loosening your breath and taking in another deep gasp you took two steps back, certain that this wasn't the right decision to make.
The girl wasn't sobbing.
She wasn't crying or cowering in fear.
She was giggling.
You saw how the giggles became louder and eventually turned to laughter. It wasn't a nice child's laughter like you had heard many times before... It was a sinister doll laughter, something robotic, something not human.
The young girl slowly stood up, still laughing and her head still hanging low. Her arms didn't move an inch as she just stood there, staring at the wooden floor. You didn't know what to do now, you had no idea what was going on.
It was then the young girl finally turned around, showing the front of her body to you. Her face was covered by her dirty, bloody, brown hair but you could still hear her laughter faintly. It was as if it was dying out, as if she was slowly stopping with laughing.
The front of her body looked almost the same as the back. Dress, dirty and ripped. Cuts all over her legs, her arms and any skin you could see, along with bruising. The only difference was the fair amount of blood staining the front of the dress and her hands.
She began to stand more straight, lifting her head in order for you to get a nice view on her horrific face. A big, red slash across her forehead told you that she indeed wasn't human. The blood from the deep cut dripping onto her face, rolling off of her dirty and with mud stained cheeks unto her dress, her feet and the floor.
Her mouth was curled up into a nasty, crooked smile...
But the thing that frightened you the most were her eyes. You saw something you had seen many, many times before. Something which stood out for the killers. Their brandmark, the fucking thing that makes you recognize them.
Big, green eyes filled with malicious intent and lust.
Lust for blood, lust for murder and lust for... Death.
Within seconds you saw those eyes you knew you were fucked. You knew you had made the wrong decision to go to this girl. You knew that Jeff had been right all along.
"You want to play with me?" A sickening, sweet voice spoke and you immediately turned on your heel as you bolted through the hallway. You didn't even look back, you just ran straight on. You had no idea how you managed to get your eyes away from hers, but you were running now.
Running for your goddamn life from an inhuman, dead child.
A loud crash to your right made you snap your head towards it, seeing that vases, rocks, bricks or something like that was coming your way. She was literally throwing stuff at you?!
Out of nowhere things started to crash into the wall, obviously missing their target. You jumped out of the way several times, covering your head with our arms as you barely missed a flying object that was meant for your head. You had no idea where to go, what to do now.
You knew Jeff's room wouldn't be safe. It wasn't locked, she would get you.
Feeling the sweat rolling off of your forehead you decided to just run, get to the staircase and maybe into the woods. Your feet were tapping loudly against the wooden floor and aside from your breath you heard her sickening laughter filling your ears.
"Come play with meee~" You nearly tumbled over another rock that was thrown your way, splashing apart against the wall and rolling in front of your feet. You saw the door at the end of the corridor but it felt like you had been running for hours.
Your energy had somehow been completely drained and if it wasn't for the adrenaline and sheer determination to stay alive you would've certainly get caught. A vague, buzzing sound was filling your ears and your head started to feel like it was on fire.
Groaning loudly over your panting your hand reached for your head. Your eyesight became slightly blurry as the buzzing intensified. Peeking through half-lidded eyes you managed to keep on running and dodging objects, but it was goddamn hard.
What the hell was happening to you?
The hallway didn't seem to end and at this rate you wouldn't make it. Each step you took made it feel like your brain was being shaken heavily, the pain almost beginning to get too unbearable to continue on.
You were so focused on getting out of here, dodging the rubble and keeping on running that you hadn't noticed it was already too late. You suddenly came to a rough stop, falling face first onto the floor as you were too slow to catch yourself with your hand.
You recovered quickly, immediately turning around, searching for the thing that had caused you to stop. Only to see that a gigantic, black tentacle had been wrapped around your ankle. You took a quick glance at the other end of the corridor, but what you saw made you turn your attention back to the tentacle.
A gigantic, black, smoky creature was engulfing the young child. The tentacles coming from it, desperately trying to get you in their grip. Even by looking at it for a second the buzzing increased drastically and you felt your stomach turning like a vending machine.
What in the world was that creature?! You didn't have any time to think of a solution as you felt the tentacle pulling at your ankle, before you were sliding roughly over the old, wooden floor.
You felt the splinters entering your skin as you tried to hold on to anything... Yet only parts of stone and glass were filling the corridor. You managed to get a piece of stone, looking back to see the dark creature getting closer and closer.
You somehow couldn't look directly at it.
The tentacle continued to drag you towards the darkness and the buzzing felt like it was at its highest point. Your eyesight became blurrier, the world spinning more and more in front of your eyes. The urge to throw up increased and a metal like taste filled your mouth.
Out of sheer panic you then rammed the stone harshly onto the tentacle, just like that time you did it with BEN. It didn't seem to have any effect though, because it only tightened its grip onto your ankle. By this time you had let go of the rock in order to clench your head tightly.
It felt as if your brain was being ripped apart, as if someone was screaming extremely loud right next to your ear. Your mind was about to explode and your veins felt like they would pop any second now.
The only thing you could do was scream, scream for help and scream for mercy as the tentacle continued to drag you towards the darkness.
The pain and buzzing felt in your head eventually became unbearable. The dizziness was too much to handle and you felt yourself slowly slipping deeper and deeper into the darkness.
You felt the scraping of wood against your skin, your head falling roughly onto the floorboards as more tentacles enclosed themselves around your body.
The last thing you heard was a faint whisper before you eventually slipped into darkness.
One you would never manage to wake up from.
The Core And The Wardens of Eternity
What is the Core, they asked me... It's the light that pushes the darkness away, a bastion of justice, a safe keeper of life. It grooms love and tolerance, embraces science, fights ignorance, sentences it to die a slow and tragic death. The Core... it's something that can't be destroyed for destroying it is to terminate the time and space itself. When the stuck-in-a-dark-age world of Zanria goes offline, the Core sends one of its experienced agents to find out what is going on and to try to reestablish a mysteriously severed connection. However, all his training and experience might come way short as the world sinks in war and chaos with different races and clans fighting for the Star of Bardan, the ward rumored to possess enough supernatural power to create and destroy entire worlds. *** I just changed the name of the series, from 'the Nexus' to 'the Core'. Somehow it just sounds more right to me. This is the first story, and it has a medieval fantasy setting. But, eventually, this is going to turn into Isekai series with elements of LitRPG. So, my future books might include worlds with advanced technologies that might be more in SciFi, including Steampunk, genre. The first book might start slow, but after a few chapters, it should all be properly set up, and by then you should get the feel of how it will all flow. Also, I plan to introduce different story threats that should spread out and criss-cross in the future. Hopefully, I will not complicate it too much, and that it will all read good. I am planning to continue to add chapters to the main storyline here, but I'm also starting a new story threat in the Core series called The Recordings of Raan. There is also a side story The Memoires of Eisen that's exclusive on Patreon for those who would like to support me.
