《Cupid's Match : CUPID'S MATCH BOOK 1》Chapter 69

I sprint after Cupid down the tunnel; my heart is pounding hard against my chest.
The screech of the walls against the stone floor fills my ears. The smooth metal is so close to me now that my sides ram against it as I stumble forwards. My leg muscles are screaming with the effort and my breathing is hard and fast.
We're getting closer to the window at the end – but it's still a good fifty metres away. It gets narrower as the walls on either side get closer.
Panic fills me.
I'm not sure I can make it.
Cupid is ahead, his strong legs propelling him forwards.
Twenty metres to go.
He glances over his shoulder as he reaches the end of the tunnel. The walls are now almost touching me.
"Lila" he shouts.
I'm almost there.
With a spurt of strength I thrust myself forwards. I can hardly breathe – the air is close and I have a stitch in my side.
Five metres to go.
The tunnel walls are almost closed in on Cupid's broad frame. With a screaming effort he twists his shoulder around and grabs my arm so hard that I feel a harsh jolt in my shoulder.
He pulls me forward and together we burst forwards through the end of the corridor, our sides scraping against the narrow edges as it clamps shut behind us. For a moment we find ourselves falling through the air.
Then pain spurts through my body as we hit the floor hard, a crumpled heap of arms and legs on the ground.
Cupid groans as I disentangle myself from his body. He rolls onto his back then pushes himself up so he's leaning on his elbows. He finds me with his eyes as I kneel on the floor beside him, trying to catch my breath.
"Pandora's box" he says, rolling his eyes "Of course. I should have guessed there would be some claustrophobic element to her Sim. Are you OK?"
I nod, glancing down at my body; the agent's suit I'm wearing is covered with a thick layer of dust and rubble. I brush down my arms then I look around us.
We're in a small, square room. Dark shadows flicker about the space, created by flamed torches. They make the eerie carvings in the stone walls seem like they're moving. I try to make them out in the dim light; there's a strange, horned goat like creature on one side and what looks like a human heart carved into the other.
Across the room is a metal door. In ancient calligraphy I notice the letter L imprinted into its surface. Around the frame the numbers one to seven are repeated in flourished carvings.

What do they mean?
I remember Cupid saying something earlier about Pandora keeping sins in her box.
Seven sins?
As I'm surveying the space, a metallic gleam catches my eye and I look upwards to see the closed tunnel by the ceiling that we just fell from. I feel a wave of relief – if we were just seconds slower we would have been crushed.
I turn back to Cupid who is still casually propped up by his elbows on the ground. I wonder why he hasn't got up yet. His gaze catches mine and he holds it.
I notice the cotton shirt beneath his leather jacket is damp with sweat, and clings to his body.
Even though I know we should move on through the L marked door – I feel strangely unable to move as I kneel beside Cupid. I can feel heat radiating from him.
"What is this place?" I whisper.
My voice comes out croaky and breathless. I'm hot, and I feel different.
Cupid doesn't answer me. His eyes burn into mine and I notice the heavy rising and falling of his chest.
He looks almost feverish.
Suddenly, with a swift movement, he grabs the back of my head with a large hand and pulls me to towards his face. I stumble into him and he kisses me, the movements of his mouth hot and heavy.
His arms enclose around me – pulling me closer to him. Tentatively I run my fingers along the back of his neck and a small groan escapes him. With a sudden movement he grabs me and flips me over onto my back – his lips still moving against mine.
Then, just as suddenly, he propels himself away from me. There's an astonished look on his face as he leaps to his feet and throws himself back against the far wall. His breathing is heavy and his eyes wide.
He turns and puts his head against the stone wall, facing away from me.
I scramble up to a sitting position and look up at him – feeling embarrassed by his reaction.
What's wrong with him?
What's wrong with me?
"We need to get out of here" he says.
His voice sounds different; lower and more rugged.
"What is it?" I say quietly. "What's wrong?"
He turns back around to face me – his eyes look wild and dangerous.
"I told you that Pandora could control the sins" he says between hard and heavy breaths "There are seven in total. Lust is one of them."
He gestures to the L in the door.

"L for Lust." he says "It's controlling us. We need to get out of here."
I look from him to the door then scramble to my feet. I try to walk towards it, but somehow find myself approaching Cupid.
"Lila" he says, his breathing heavy "You need to stay away from me. It'll work on us like the Ardor. Drive us mad. We'll never get out."
I try to move away but I find myself reaching forwards. I touch his arm but he flinches away.
"Lila" he warns, alarm in his eyes.
I notice my breathing is heavy and my skin is tingling. The air is warm and stuffy.
He stares at me – the line of his jaw hard, his body rigid. He looks like he's fighting something inside of him.
Then suddenly the resolve seems to dissolve off his face and he grins – but it's not his usual grin. There is something unfamiliar about his face – like he's not quite himself anymore.
"Could have been a worse Sin to be stuck with I suppose" He says.
His eyes twinkle mischievously as he steps towards me.
I feel his hot breaths on my skin, and smell his scent of warmth and soap and dirt.
His words repeat in my head.
The Lust will drive us mad.
We'll never get out.
I wrench myself away from him and bolt towards the door; ramming my shoulder against it.
It gives way – screeching against the floor – and the spell is broken. I lean my back against the carved metal and catch Cupid's gaze, my breathing heavy.
He raises his eyebrows – instantly back to his usual self. I feel my face flush but he seems completely unabashed.
"Well..." he says smirking "That was interesting..."
He strides across the room towards me.
"Though as I said – it could have been worse" he adds "Sloth, Wrath, Greed..."
I think of the other Sins; Envy, Pride.
"Gluttony might not have been so bad" I say my voice still a little croaky "Maybe we'd have just got to eat a load of pies or something."
Cupid raises his eyebrows.
"Pies?!" he says "You're thinking about pies at a time like this?"
He chuckles lightly as he reaches the narrowly open door. He looks down at me.
"Come on" he says.
I nod, and we both walk through.
Almost instantly I feel the wind knocked out of my lungs as something hits me. I'm thrown aside and land hard on the ground. I hear the sound of a female War cry, and the clash of metal against metal.
I look up from the ground, my head hurting where I just hit it.
Cupid is fighting an athletic looking female.
Her hair is long and black, and whips ferociously around her face. She wears a long dress which moves and flows with her quick, liquid like movements as though she's battling through water. She's wielding what looks like a samurai sword which Cupid deflects with one of his arrows; he brandishes it in front of his body with both hands like a barrier against her viscous blows.
I glance around hurriedly.
We're in a vast square, arena. There are seven doors surrounding the space, including the one Cupid and I just came from. In the centre of the arena is a raised, square door in the ground.
I feel my body tense.
Behind the sound of fighting, I hear something worse; something that makes the hairs on my arms stand on end.
It's the weird squelching sound I heard earlier in the tunnel.
What is that??
I glance up at Cupid.
The girl has him pushed up against the wall.
"Pandora" he says, raising his hands in defeat "Pandora, it's me."
She stares at him a moment with ferocious, cat like eyes. Then she furrows her eyebrows.
"Cupid?"
Around me I hear the noise again.
"Yes" he says "We've come to get you out of here."
She looks at him suspiciously.
"There's no way out of here" she says.
She glances sideways at me – but my focus is now on the doors in the centre of the floor.
The noise is coming from there.
I stare at it as the doors begin to move; something is pushing against them.
There's something in there.
I stay still – frozen to the ground.
Pandora notices me looking and then turns her gaze coldly back to Cupid.
"Every hour" she says "Every hour for as long as I can remember. One Sin comes out from that box. And I have to kill it or be killed myself. Next one is Gluttony."
She strides towards the doors, which are now moving more rigorously, and brandishes her sword.
"If you really are here to help me – then get ready to fight" she says.
My heart races as the doors in the floor suddenly burst open.
"Oh" she adds "And don't get eaten."

Warhammer 40,000: Mind over Matter
Set in the Warhammer 40k universe, but accessible to those unfamiliar with the setting. The Imperium of Man has been fighting the Long War for ten thousand years. It is a war fought simultaneously across thousands of stars and against innumerable enemies. On smoke-filled battlefields and in the cold emptiness of the void the military might of the Imperium stands strong in the face of horrifying foes. It is not a war fought to conquer new lands, or to seize the wealth of enemy nations. It is a war fought to hold what they have, or to regain what they have already lost. The world of Nova Iberia is far from that war and supports the Imperium by sending her finest sons to foreign stars to fight and die as elite commandos in the Imperial Guard. A chance discovery on the corpse of one of these commandos has cast doubts around the world's loyalty, and has drawn the attention of the Imperial Inquisition. The seekers of the Alien, the Heretic and the Daemon have descended upon this peaceful world, and they will not leave it intact. Primaris Psyker Amelia Lafayette was a ward of the state, now bound as an acolyte to the Inquisition in recognition of her telepathic gifts. Inexperienced, and browbeaten by her training, she must adapt to her new circumstances or fall. If she can navigate the tangled webs of heresy, and survive life in the Inquisition, then she may find the opportunity to prove herself worthy of greater authority.
