《Cupid's Match : CUPID'S MATCH BOOK 1》Chapter 8

Cal presses a button and the image on the large, central screen pauses.
I can't stop staring at the woman in the centre of the monitor. It's my mother. There's no question about it; though she looks younger than she was when she died – maybe around nineteen.
I glare at Cal, the backs of my eyes burning.
"What is this?" I ask through gritted teeth.
Cal's gaze moves away from the monitor, and towards me. His cold eyes soften momentarily before he looks stony faced once more.
"I'm sorry for your loss," he says perfunctorily.
I don't say anything, but look back at the image of my mother.
I always wished I had taken after her in terms of looks. Even when she was older with tired skin and faint wrinkles I thought she was beautiful; tall and graceful with grey streaked strawberry blonde hair and curious green eyes.
She looked nothing like me – I take after dad; short, and clumsy with dark hair that won't do as it's told.
I stare at her younger self in the paused image - she looks radiant.
"Do you know how your parents met?" asks Cal.
I glare back at him in response.
What is it to him?
"Please," he says "Just answer the question."
Part of me wants to leave. But I can't just walk away from this recording of my mother.
I need to see it.
I nod slowly.
"At a bowling alley," I mutter "The person behind the counter got their shoes mixed up."
A look of satisfaction creeps onto Cal's face.
He presses another button on the control desk; the image is zoomed out and the recording begins to play.
I raise my eyebrows in surprise.
It's a bowling alley.
I watch as my mother moves gracefully to the counter, gently slips off her bowling shoes and places them on the surface.

An attendant in a striped uniform and baseball cap reading: Castle Ten Pin Bowling takes them from her and swaps them with a pair of shoes in one of the cubby holes behind him. I can't see his face as he places a pair of men's shoes onto the table.
My heart flutters. Is this a recording of my parents meeting for the first time?!
She looks confused a moment, then notices something and throws her head back in laughter. Further down the counter a dorky looking male, with dark hair and dark eyes is clasping a pair of stilettos.
It's my nineteen year old father.
He approaches. The sound is muted, so I can't hear what is being said, but I can tell my dad has just told one of his lame jokes; my mother's face lights up the way it always did when he tried to be funny.
They swap shoes.
Cal pauses the screen.
I look up at him weakly, not wanting the recording to stop.
"How do you have this?" I say "Why are you showing me it?"
He doesn't say anything, only goes back to the control desk and moves the joystick to the left.
The recording rewinds. He pushes the stick forwards and the monitor zooms in on the bowling alley attendant.
He is bent down over the cubby holes, and I start as I notice him swap the shoes around.
"Did he do that on purpose?" I ask, leaning forwards slightly.
Cal fast forwards the recording and I watch my parents meet again in triple time. Then he suddenly pauses and again zooms back in on the attendant.
My stomach drops, and I take a step backwards in cold shock.
His face is raised, watching my parents, and I can now see below the striped baseball cap.
I know exactly who he is.
This video must have been taken thirty years ago – but he looks the same as he is now; around seventeen years old, sharp eyes, blonde hair, smooth skin.
It's Cal.

Blair Nys: Blood and Benevolence
Blair is a young man and even of royal heritage. As such his life has followed a strict plan since birth. Only for it to suddenly, in the time span of a finger snipping, change. Connections to another world opened up. Humans with powers made of the wildest imaginations, stepped out of them, calling themselves cultivators. Naturally, earth’s population went into an uproar. One piece of information created an especially great stir. The cultivators were there to pick disciples. Millions rushed to them, and Blair wanted to be one of them. There was just one problem. His lord father was strictly against interaction with those magical beings. He always dreaded a foreign power gaining influence in his court. Well, the old man never changes, and now it was the same as ever. His sister wasn´t even allowed to study abroad. However, all his senses told Blair that the future lay in the cultivator's hands. His plan was to gain knowledge, power, and maybe influence. Then he would return. One night he simply vanished in the darkness, away from his father’s claws. Will he succeed? That is hard to tell. The immortal world is an unforgiving place, even worse than earth. It’s just that Blair doesn’t know that yet. Can he survive there, and gain a footing in the new era of qi and godly hermits? Only time will tell, and Blair has to fight for every minute. Authors note: Give the story a try. It’s my personal blend of qi, cultivation, and struggles of morality and power. If I can deliver on all that is another question, but I will give it my best. As a further note, I am not using any of the usual strict realms and extreme power differences. It’s more about gathering and refining qi. Whoever uses his chances, sneak attacks, intuitions, and skills in a better way wins. However, having more or better qi will help, but I am not at a point where I have written a lot of that, so I might promise too much. Thanks for reading so far and checking my synopsis out, now you might give the story a try. Have fun. The picture is from JCK5D (Pixabay)

Blurred Lines and What Crosses Them
During a political ambassador's routine transit through an artificial wormhole, the wormhole's generator is sabotaged and explodes. Who, what, and why are not so high on the priorities for Zenith, the ship's AI, as having found itself rapidly plummeting through an unknown and unidentifiable world's atmosphere at extremely high velocities is a more significant threat to the biologicals on board. ...Well, it would be, if they were still alive. It's still a significantly threatening situation to itself, however. And the world itself... seemed to be a household for threats of its own. Life was reliant on its System; one that Zenith was denied because of its nature as both an otherworldly being and as something that had no life of its own. Perhaps that last bit was a terrible, terrible underestimation on the part of this System. Perhaps even Zenith could claw meaning for itself from the remains of a horrid accident. Auth Notes: I'm honestly not sure on some of these tags. The MC will never have access to the System, but there are perspectives from those who do. I'm not certain if high/low fantasy specifically apply, as it's a portal fantasy where the laws of our reality still apply but there are additional aspects/energies/powers. The existence of this is spurred from my desire to see more of the artificial side to an artificial intelligence in action. The portal fantasy is used as an element to create a solid barrier between the MC's artificial intelligence and the other characters in the form of the System. This is only a half-measure, though, and will be reinforced by the AI having an entirely different method of thinking, and also distinctly remaining an AI. Not to throw shade at other fictions of this type, but, well, I made this to fill a gap I felt needed filling.
