"Mia..."

"Mia..."

The voice echoed through my mind, like a voice calling to me in a dream. I was in darkness, alone and unsure. What had happened to me, now seemed like a distant memory. I remember fragments, like Luc holding me, his eyes turning black with rage as my life slipped through his fingers. I had died, Henrietta had killed me, and now I wasn't sure where I was.

Was I in heaven or hell?

I wasn't sure where I would go after letting Luc explode like that. I had chosen to save Luc rather than kill him and save the world. I had selfishly thought I would be able to control him with our bond, but I hadn't thought about what would happen if I had died.

And now the world would face his wrath, just as it had done once before with his Great Uncle.

So in the end, neither Henrietta or I had won. We had both failed in our own ways. She had failed to save the world from him, I had failed to save him from himself. I couldn't save Luc from himself, and she couldn't save the world from Luc.

My poor Luc...

"Mia..."

The voice called again. It was a voice I didn't recognise, a feminine voice that was filled with warmth and kindness. My conscious drifted towards it and through the blackness, I began to see a light. At first, it was dull and distant, but then it became brilliant and blinding.

Her voice becomes clearer and stronger, "Mia, it's okay. Follow my voice."

The light dimmed around me and suddenly I found myself standing back in the safety of my dorm room, in front of a woman I'd never seen before.

She smiled softly at me and said, "Hello, Mia. I'm Celia."

"Celia," I breathed in amazement. This woman looked nothing like the distorted and twisted figure that had haunted me these past months.

She nodded, tears suddenly filling up her bright blue eyes. "You helped me find my baby," she cried out, throwing her arms around me. "I thought she had taken him from me forever. You have no idea what you've done for me and Louis."

"Louis?" I repeated in confusion – how had I helped him?

She let go of me and nodded, "You freed Louis from Henrietta's magic, the same magic that prevented me from finding my baby. You did it the moment you freed the undead from her spell. Your magic was more powerful than her magic, she stood no chance against you."

I laughed bitterly, "Well, in the end, that didn't matter. She still killed me. I'm dead and soon the whole of Port Cressida will be because of Luc."

"You can't give up yet," she said, pulling on my arm and leading me out of my room. "Come with me, there are two people I want you to meet."

She pulled me into a corridor that definitely wasn't my dorm hallway. I glanced about the narrow candlelit stone passageway that reminded me of a medieval castle. I turned back to see if my room was still there, but the wall behind me was nothing but a blank space. There was no room or door.

"This place is freaky," I whispered to myself.

"It's the realm of the dead. This is where we go when we die. It's not quite Heaven, but neither is it Hell," she explained as we followed the passageway.

"Is Henrietta here?" I asked.

"No, she has gone to a different place for her crimes against us. I suppose you could call it Hell, but it's not really the biblical fire and brimstone pit of despair you might think. It's more of place where no one can ever be happy or thrive – a kind of place without love and joy. Demons mostly live there with the wicked. Henrietta will stay there for the rest of eternity. There is no chance that she will ever be coming back."

Damn. Henrietta really screwed up. An eternity in hell for what she did to us. I slowed down a little, suddenly feeling a little sorry for her. Don't get me wrong, I thought she was a terrible person, but her motivation was kind of noble. She didn't want anyone to experience the same pain she had of losing her family, so she decided to systemically wipe out Tuta's bloodline. She wasn't like a crazed murderer who killed people for fun and thrills. She did it because she thought she was saving people.

"It seems kind of harsh," I replied softly.

"There is more to this than you realise," she said leading me through a doorway.

The medieval castle passageway dissolved into nothingness, and I found myself standing in a room that was completely alien to me. Looking round I tried to make sense of the place. It was like I was standing in a room of an ancient palace. There were strange carvings in the walls of gods that were long forgotten and paintings that reminded me of the long dead Mayan civilizations. Outside, I could see jungle and bright coloured birds flying past the windows. It was beautiful.

"Where are we," I said in amazement.

"My palace," a voice replied.

I turned to see a woman walking towards me who looked like she was an ancient pagan goddess. She wore a beaded gown and golden headdress that overflowed with exotic feathers and carried herself in a way that made me want to do a bow or a curtsey in her presence.

She looked at me and said, "So you're the girl who is married to my great grandson."

I blinked and looked to Celia for any hint of who the hell this woman was. She smiled pleasantly at me, offering no clue and said, "The Queen will be here soon."

"The Queen?" I repeated.

A door the far side of the room opened and a woman swept in wearing a Victorian style dress, that trailed behind her. The situation was so surreal I shook my head and muttered, "I feel like I'm in the middle of a fever dream, or a weird episode Dr. Who."

Celia laughed and replied, "This is Queen Rhoda, Luc's mother, and this is Empress Moraykah, Luc's great grandmother."

Queen Rhoda?

Empress Moraykah?

This really was a fever dream, or just an extremely awkward 'let's meet the in-laws' get together. I smiled stiffly at both of them, Queen Rhoda in her Victorian tea gown, and Empress Moraykah in her imperial Mayan ensemble.

"Lovely to meet you both. I've heard so much about the both of you," I said stiffly.

Rhoda stepped forward and hugged me, "It is so wonderful to meet you properly," she said in a thick Irish accent. "You probably don't recognise me, but we have met before – I am the burning lady that you've been seeing so often. Henrietta cursed me from crossing over to the realm of the dead. I ended up being stuck in that ghastly form, so I'm so sorry if I scared you, love. I was only trying to help."

"It's okay," I replied. "I understand."

She squeezed me and then let go. "I'm so glad that you chose to fight for my son. I made some bad mistakes as a parent, mistakes that I hope you don't make with your own children."

"Well, that's pretty unlikely now," I said, running my hands over my stomach.

When I died so did my baby...

"Oh, my dear," Rhoda said grasping my shoulders. "You are not meant for this world just yet - nor are your babies."

"What?"

"Your gift of death has another element to it – resurrection. Yes, you died. But you have the ability to resurrect yourself and the babies that grow within you."

Tears suddenly began welling up in my eyes, "Wait, are you saying that I can go back and rescue Luc?"

Rhoda nodded.

"How?" I asked anxiously.

Moraykah stepped forward and said, "Not yet. First, there is something I wish to tell you, something about my son Tuta."

I raised my hand up and said, "I already know. Henrietta told me what he did and how he lost it."

"My son never did that," she snapped. "Tuta did have the darkness in him, it was a trait he inherited from his father, but he never killed his family or destroyed my city. That was done by someone or rather something else. Tuta had nothing to do with it. He was with me to the very end, fighting to save our family and our empire. He even helped to save my youngest child and because of him, our line continues. He was a brave man and not a monster."

I stared at her in astonishment.

"So Tuta never killed those people."

"No, he didn't."

It was a relief hearing this, but it made me wonder what the hell did destroy the city.

"So who did destroy your city?" I asked.

Her face saddened and she said, "It was a monster, or what you might call a demon. I don't have a name for him. I just know that he came one day and started attacking my city, along with his followers. Henrietta was one of them. She chose to turn her back on her own kind, her mate, family, friends, and city, in return for power. That's why she was determined to rid the world of my line. She wanted to eliminate the threat which our family posed against that monster."

"Okay, but how is our family a threat? Henrietta was killing little girls and babies, how could they be a threat to a demon?"

"Simply because of what they might become. You see, I was the first great empress but I will not be the last. Soon there will a second great empress, and she will be much more powerful than me and that demon knows it. She will be so powerful that she will have the ability to kill a demon single handily."

It was a lot to take on board and I really didn't know what to think of it. Demons, empresses, and killing – this really wasn't my thing.

"Do you know who this next great empress is?" I asked.

"It will be Casper's mate. She is the one," Moraykah explained.

I paused for a second. If this girl was to become the next empress, then Casper would need to be King, which would mean Luc would have to be dead.

"But what about Luc, what will happen to him?"

Moraykah shrugged, "That is up to you. You will have to save him or allow his brother to kill him. Either way, Luc is not destined to be King. The darkness inside him and his growing hatred towards the court prevents him from being the King that Port Cressida needs to save it. Do you understand?"

I nodded. I did understand.

She smiled, "I have great faith in you, Mia. Now, go rescue my great grandson and abandon the city. Casper will take over and you and Luc must go into hiding. No one must know about you and your babies."

"You mean my baby," I said.

"No, I meant babies. You are having twins - a girl and a boy to be exact. The boy will be like you, mild and gentle, while the girl will be like her father, dark and fiery. They will be in danger the moment they are born. The monster has many followers and now Henrietta's gone, they will double their efforts. You must hide until it is over and it is safe for you and your children. Do you understand?"

"I do, but - "

"Good, because it's now time for you to wake up and save your husband."

I wanted to ask more, but she waved her hand and in a flash I was on my back in the crypt, covered in dirt and blood gasping for air.
