《Distractions (Scrutinized Tanner x reader Fanfiction)》Chapter 10

The night was filled with the silent hums of Cicadas and the soft hooting of owls as Tanner drove in silence. After a week of planning and careful work, he and Y/N were finally setting their plan into action.
Tanner pulled over to the side of the road next to someone's house, every movement had to be perfect. "Are you ready for this, Y/N?" he whispered, turning at the woman just behind him as she hopped out of the vehicle. She just nodded in response.
"Good, now then just stick to the plan and everything should be fine."
Soon, the two strode along the moonlit streets and dust-filled sidewalks as they approached Luna's house. If it weren't for what they were doing, maybe this would be more romantic -- but, life does as it wishes and this was just another cog in the machine of life.

The two had finally approached Luna's house, their faces just barely glistening in the light of a nearby streetlamp. "Are you ready?" Tanner murmured. Y/N nodded again, she thought his plan was stupid but she couldn't say no to such a loving face.
Swiftly, Y/N began to walk to Luna's front door, her body filled with panic and dismay because of what she was doing. "Just remember, you're just distracting her, you're not DOING anything else," she said in panicked thought as she ruffled the grass below her feet. Suddenly, the light from a camera came on, making Y/N cover her eyes.
"Jesus Luna, don't be so harsh with the lights! It's just me, Y/N." she whisper yelled out loud. Y/N continued taking steps, ignoring the light that was being forced into her eyes. Soon, she made it to her door and gave it a soft knock.
at first, there was no response but soon Luna opened the door, "Y/N... what a surprise seeing you here, especially so late at night." she said with a slightly suspicious tone. Y/N shivered a bit, she hated that tone.
"Yes -- Yes, I know, it's just... I was in town and I thought I might check up on you. Y'know, since I am temporarily living with someone and all."
Luna seemed a bit hesitant, while Y/N could just barely make out a nervous glance around the area. It was clear she didn't fully trust her right now.
"Oh! Is the person with you by any chance?"
"no, I decided to drive alone... Turns out being around someone for a long period of time get's pretty annoying." good god, how lying to Luna hurt Y/N.
Silence.
Y/N felt on edge, she questioned if Luna was getting more suspicious at first, but soon Luna hesitantly let her in. "Well, come in -- It's not safe out here at night and it's pretty humid."

She sighed with relief and looked back a bit as Luna turned away, Tanner gave her a thumbs up from behind a nearby tree. Everything was going according to plan.
Y/N closed the door behind her as she came in, her eyes searching around the room of the house. Luna's house was clean and almost looked new, a single closet laid just beyond the couch, a window was right next to the door, and right next to that was her computer.
"Sorry for the mess if there is any, I didn't have much time to clean up or do the dishes since I wasn't expecting anyone."
"It's fine, I'm used to this kind of thing."
Y/N sat down on the couch as Luna went back to her computer and began working again. damn it, Tanner couldn't sneak in if she still had access to her cameras. Y/N tensed up and began to panic, she needed to think of something and fast before Tanner came barreling toward the house like a bullet.
"Hey, uh, Luna --" Y/N said, her body still tense and sweaty from the amount she had been panicking.
"hm?" she turned to look at her.
"I was just wondering but-- uh, how 've you been since I last saw you? I'm sure you've got SOMETHING interesting to tell me!"
Luna stayed quiet for a few seconds.
"No, not really. Most of the things that happened was I got a suspicious person alert for you..." she said turning away from her computer.
"you... you did?"
Y/N felt her body become hot and her face morphed into that of shock and fear. Did someone make a report on her? who? why? how? It all made Y/N feel super uncomfortable and she could feel herself shaking.
"Mhm, but it wasn't anything of importance... It was from your friend, she thought the guy you were staying with did something to you."
At the sound of that, Y/N slowed down her panic-fest and relaxed a bit.
"I see, I guess she was just too worried about me..."
"I suppose so."
Luna went back to turn around while Y/N looked behind her to see Tanner peaking through Luna's bedroom door. Y/N nervously looked back at Luna and tapped her on the shoulder, now all she had to do was get her in position.
"Hey, I was wondering but could you show me to your bathroom? I can't seem to remember the layout like I normally do."
Luna sighed and got up from her chair, her eyes darted over to Y/N for a split second as she brushed her hair out of her face.

"fine... fallow me."
Luna got up and walked through the hallway, Y/N close behind her. While she walked over and opened the door to her bathroom, she didn't seem to notice the tall man come up behind her and withdraw his syringe from her.
"Alright, here you are the ba-" Luna halted as she saw Tanner's wide smile and narrowed eyes.
"having fun?~" he cooed in a chilling tone as he grabbed Luna's face, moving her head to the side so he could inject the sedative into her neck. Luna peered over to Y/N who tried to look like she was unaware of Tanner's presence before she passed out.
⋆⛧*┈┈┈┈﹤୨♡୧﹥ ┈┈┈┈*⛧⋆
Tanner dragged Luna's body into the back of the car while Y/N got into the front passenger seat. She felt dirty treating Luna that way, she was the woman who had been her best friend for years and now she had just done the equivalent of betraying her.
Tanner huffed in frustration as he slammed the doors shut and stepped into the driver's seat, his eyes trailing over to his girlfriend, Y/N, who looked a lot more glum than usual.
"Why such the long face?" he hummed as he started the car and began driving away from the scene, "you did just a good job tonight, I'd say even better than Demitri could ever do and I've worked with that guy for 2 years."
She gave a small smile but it changed back into a frown, her brow furrowed as she looked through the tinted window, her breath fogging the glass. "It's just... I feel so dirty treating Luna like this, I LIED to her."
Tanner frowned and looked back at Luna, then Y/N who was still looking upset. His soft hand reached for her face as they reached a red stoplight, he tilted her head to his and he gave her a gentle kiss on the lips. Y/N felt her face get hot as he quickly departed and turned his blinker on, waiting for the red light to turn green.
"Don't feel too upset, humans lie all the time, It's just how we are. Besides, it's not like you did it to hurt her. You did it for my sake, so we could HELP her -- Sometimes it's good to lie, you know?"
The red light flashed green and Tanner turned, enjoying the night and how beautiful the town looked in it. Despite needing to work in darkness, the little lights that painted the town were always his favorite thing. In some ways it was soothing, and he hoped it was doing the same for Y/N.
"I don't know -- I just -- can't help but feel bad. It's something my mom always taught me, never lie or you could seriously hurt someone."
"I get that, but that's just completely wrong. Lying all the time is bad, sure, but if you don't lie some time in your life you end up spilling too much too often -- and then what else can you do when THAT gets you in more trouble than it's worth?"
silence soon shrouded the car after that, Y/N had befallen into thought and was now trying to think of some way to protest against the man. But she couldn't. He was right, she knew he was and there was nothing else she could say to change his mind.
Tanner looked over at her again, one of his hands becoming dominant in driving while the other left the wheel and set itself on her leg. "Hey... don't feel so bad, you know I hate it when you get upset about things you shouldn't be upset about. After all, I did cry for you and that's something I don't do for just anyone."
Y/N didn't reply but instead put her hand on his that was at present, on her leg. Her head leaned over and was set down on his shoulder.
"Your right -- I shouldn't be so hard on myself, But that doesn't matter now. Where are we heading off to? We've been driving a lot longer than expected." she peeped, her mind easing down into calm and welcoming thoughts again.
"To my home, you see -- I do have a giant house but it's being renovated, in fact, it's nearly done. I still do work there simply because none of the members of the renovation company are allowed there after dark. Especially not with everything that's been going on with me and Demitri being around."
"Oh, I see. Why did you never mention it?"
"Eh, I thought it would be unimportant until now. I guess things change, huh?"
"They sure do..."
To Be Continued...

A/N:
This is actually more well written than the other parts... How? I don't know, but I do know that I love this part just -- everything about it is so smooth! the dialogue is natural and I explained everything so well! Also, shout out to all the people who have seen my work before I edit it with Grammarly because my Grammarly works like ass-dicks while I'm writing it until I publish it. YOU ALL HAVE SEEN MY BROKEN ENGLISH.

Galactic Economics
Humanity enters the galaxy and makes First Contact, only to begin to realize that not everything is at it seems. It appears that the galactic alien community has forgotten to invent some rather important economic concepts that human civilization has taken for granted. This is a look at a hypothetical galactic scale barter economy, how that would work, or how as one of our main characters Sarah realizes... it doesn't. And as the galaxy falls apart at the seams, it's up to the best and brightest in humanity to put things back together. Story contains a lot about markets, logistics, development, and the best and worst of human history. Not so much Space Marines nuking aliens. If you enjoyed the trade negotiations and Senate politics in the Star Wars prequels, and wished that there was an entire standalone story consisting solely of those parts, this might be for you! Galactic Economics is also posted on reddit here.
