DOP answers the question: WHAT?
Here are some examples of DOP.
1. Amanda tiene el libro. (Amanda has the book.)
For example, in this sentence, if you ask WHAT?The what is the book. Amanda has what? The book.
2. Estoy comprando unos zapatos. (I am buying some shoes.)
These DOP statements can be written as...
1. Amanda lo tiene. (lo = el libro)
2. Los estoy comprando. (los = unos zapatos)
Here is the rule for DOP:
Now, moving on to IOP.
IOP answers the question: TO WHOM?
Here are some examples of IOP:
1. Juan me compra un regalo. (John buys me a gift.)
In this case, the answer for TO WHOM will be "me". John buys a gift for whom? For me!
2. Ella le escribe una carta. (She writes him the letter.)
Here is the rule for IOP:
Adding on to the statement above, here is an example.
Yo le compro un coche a Amanda. (I buy a car for Amanda.)
Yo le lo compro. (lo (DOP) = un choche)
