One month later...

"Shit, shit, shit, shit. Ryder! Oliver shit on the floor again," I scream. Ryder comes out of the bedroom wearing only sweatpants. His hair is a mess and his eyes still look sleepy.

"Ugh, come on Oliver. Not cool," he says picking the small dog up and heading outside with him. Boomer walks over to the pile of poop, sniffs it, and walks far away.

"Smart guy," I comment and begin cleaning up the mess. I forgot how much work having a puppy is. Oliver cries early in the morning to go out then still has accidents. I can't win. At least Boomer seems to be enjoying his company, they play together and nap together, and it's freaking adorable.

"Why the hell can't we potty train this dog?" Ryder asks bringing Oliver inside and getting him a treat. Oliver happily grabs the treat and runs to his bed to eat his cookie in comfort.

"I don't know," I whine and grab two mugs and pour us coffee.

"Are we bad parents?" Ryder asks kissing the top of my head then heading to his seat at the kitchen table.

"I raised Boomer! I'm not a bad parent. Maybe you are. You're too soft with him," I say.

Ryder ignores me and puts Oliver on his lap. Oliver's paws are on the table and he's sitting like a human.

"Get his paws off the table. That's gross," I say laughing as Oliver begins squirming in Ryder's arms.

"You might be getting too big to sit like that," Ryder says putting the dog down. Oliver has grown a ton over the last month. He now looks more like a dog and less like a puppy. But he still has a lot more growing to do.

Oliver runs off to find Boomer and they snuggle together on the dog bed that's in the living room.

"I have to leave soon," Ryder says cleaning up his coffee cup and heading back towards the bedroom. I follow him and wrap my arms around his bare waist and kiss his shoulder.

"Don't leave," I say and try to bribe him to stay by taking off my top.

Ryder shakes his head, "don't do this," but I can tell he doesn't mean it because now pushing me back towards the bed.

"I'm not doing anything," I tell him and continue kissing him. He is eagerly kissing back before his alarm on his phone goes off.

"Shit, I really have to go."

"No," I say switching positions so I'm on top of him now. His phone continues to go off, waking up the dogs, and soon they are barging their way through the door and climbing onto the bed.

"Ugh," I say rolling off of him and start getting attacked by the two dogs. Ryder is off the bed and into the bathroom before I can start up again.

"Come by the firehouse tonight," Ryder says sticking his head out of the bathroom.

"Isn't there a fire you need to stop?" I ask rolling my eyes.

He shrugs, "hopefully not. Just come by. We can eat tacos on the roof."

"Okay. Sold. I'll bring the tacos."

Ryder and I have our routine down. He showers while I make coffee, then I shower while he gets dressed, then he leaves, and I finish getting ready. It is still crazy to me how comfortable we became with each other. I can't picture this house without him in it anymore. The days he works I wander around the house hating the silence and how the bed seems too big without him.

I walk into the flower shop to see Gabe and Carley looking somewhat tense near the counter.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"Nothing," Carley says too quickly and Gabe gives her a look.

"What's going on?" I ask nervously. I don't like that Carley looks like she has a secret.

"Nothing. What are you doing tonight?" Carley asks changing the subject.

I decide to play along, "going to visit Ryder at work."

Carley smiles strangely and heads to the office to work on paperwork, I guess. That leaves Gabe and I standing awkwardly. He nods and heads out the door without another word.

"What the fuck is wrong with Gabe? Did he knock someone else up? Shit did he knock you up?" I ask walking into the backroom. Carley is keeping busy with the piles of paperwork that have accumulated from the beginning of summer rush.

She rolls her eyes, "I am not knocked up. And I hope he didn't knock anyone else up."

I narrow my eyes at her, "you're hiding something."

Carley avoids me for the rest of the afternoon but I'm too stubborn to try to talk to her about it. I keep attempting to open my mouth to ask her if she's okay but the way she is keeping her distance makes me think she doesn't want me to bother asking.

I'm still thinking about Carley as I head to the firehouse later that night. Ryder opens the door and leads me up to the roof. We sit with the bag of tacos between us.

"What's up?" he asks.

"Carley was being so weird this afternoon. She was avoiding me and shit. Are her and Gabe okay?"

He nods, "Gabe hasn't mentioned anything."

I shrug and we eat in silence for a little while. I don't know if I'm being paranoid or but Ryder seems to be on edge too.

"Is everything okay with you?" I ask turning towards him. He smiles at me lazily and nods his head but doesn't say anything else.

I don't know what to say or do so I keep eating and hope the weirdness passes.

"Okay, I have something to tell you," Ryder says abruptly and stands up. I stand up to and face him. My heart is beating fast because I feel like everything is about to end.

He is quiet again and I look past Ryder to see the sun setting. Bursts of oranges and yellows over trees and houses. We are on top of the world up here. It is just as incredible as it was the first time we were up here.

I can't believe how long ago that was.

"Addison," Ryder says taking my hands in his.

"Yes?" I say trying to hide the shaking off my voice. Shit, this is it. Ryder's ending it on the roof. Perfect. I have no where to escape. Well, at least I'm glad we aren't drinking so I can run down the stairs and out to my car without falling or dying.

"Can you stop freaking out for a second?" Ryder laughs and I want to smack him. How am I supposed to stop freaking out?

"Addison," he says again, "I know we haven't been together that long but I've known that it's you since we met in that bar. This has been the most fun I've had in my life and I love everything about you. I love your craziness, your ideas, the way you scrunch your nose up when you're trying to hold in laughter, I even love your dad and his boardgames," Ryder chuckles.

I hold my breath because I think I know what's coming.

"Will you marry me?" Ryder asks pulling out a simple diamond ring. It's beautiful and I can tell Carley helped him pick it out because it looks like one we were looking at on Pinterest a few weeks ago.

"That's why Carley's been acting strange! She knew!" I say laughing. I was so worried for no reason.

"Uhm, Addy, you're supposed to say yes or no. Fuck, please don't say no," Ryder says still holding out the ring box.

"Oh, shit. Sorry. Yes, I say yes!" I tell him and he smiles one of his perfect smiles and slides the ring onto my finger.

"We can have a long engagement. Whatever you want," Ryder says.

I shake my head, "shut up," and we kiss as the sun sets and I can't stop smiling.

"Carley and Gabe are waiting at our house for us," Ryder says in-between kisses.

"Don't you have to work?" I ask.

He shakes his head, "no, I just wanted to ask you on the roof. Pretty romantic, right?"

"Yeah. Sunsets and tacos are one of the most romantic settings," I say looking down at the ring.

"Let's go," he says grabbing my hand and leading me down the stairs. We both go in our separate cars and follow each other home.

"Oh my God, can the dogs be in the wedding?" I ask when we arrive at the house.

"Yeah. Boomer can be your maid of honor and Oliver can be my best man," Ryder says unlocking the door. Before I can say that Boomer's a boy and can't be a maid of honor we are bombarded by the dogs and our best friends. All four of them come running towards us when we walk in the door. The dogs are jumping and Carley and Gabe are asking questions and congratulating us.

The future has always scared me but if Ryder's holding my hand through it all, I'm not afraid anymore.
