《The Steele Brothers (Completed)》18. Raven

The Librarian, hurried towards me as I entered the library. "Mr Steele, This note was left for you" she called, passing me the plain envelope with only my name on, before hurrying off.
I headed upstairs, still thinking over what had happened with Jamison this morning, I needed to tell Ash and Grey... I stopped mid stride as I read the words on the letter I had just opened.
'Library Rear Car Park 10am
Don't be late!'
What the hell, I shook my head, this had to be from her family, I grinned, wondering what they would do if I was late, would it be worth finding out, or could it mess up what we were trying to have with Viri.
A quick glance at my watch told me I was nearly out of time to make a decision, so I went with my gut and headed towards the back staircases and out into the car park.
The blacked out SUV was sat in the centre of the car park, a second SUV parked blocking the car park entrance, at my approach a suited goon got out of the front and opened the rear door "Get In" he grumbled at me.
I stopped and looked at him "Why?" and hid my grin at his look of confusion, he was obviously not used to being questioned.
"Raven Steele" a male voice calls from inside the car and I take one more step forward looking inside curiously. The guy inside looks about my age but has a shock of white hair and very distinct features... a cousin then but which one?
"I just want to talk, my name is Leo, I am Viridian's cousin" he informs me and again going with my gut, I step forward and get into the car.
He looks me over before giving the instruction to his men "Go"
Sitting back, I try to keep my cool, not sure if he is trying to intimidate me or this was how he usually was, I didn't think I was at risk from him, he was here to ask questions, if he had wanted to hurt me or my brothers, I was sure this would have gone down completely differently.
"So Talk" I say and he laughs before grinning at me and holding out his hand.
"Let's start again, I'm Leo"
"Raven" I reply and shake his hand. "Want to tell me why I am here... and why you are not talking directly to Viri"
He fidgets and sighs "Ah yes, Viri can get a little annoyed with our... watching over her and she made us all promise to not interfere while she was here"
"But..." I prompt him.
"But, my darling cousin has been acting out of character and on talking to her security team a number of things have come to light" he explains.

"Why me?"
"Because you are the one claiming to be her 'boyfriend'" his derision at the term was clear, "But her team think that could be wrong and the there appear to be others seeking her out" he paused again. "We just need her to be safe, and if its not safe then we will take her home"
"No you won't" I tell him calmly, even though I want to shout the denial out. "She belongs here, with me... and my brothers, we can protect her"
He watches me with narrowed eyes "So much of what you have just said we need to talk about" he growls out.
"Sir, we are here" the goon in the front tells us as the car swings into an underground garage.
My heartbeat kicks up a gear as the car travels deeper into the darkness before stopping.
"Come on" Leo says as our doors are opened and he gets out. I take a deep breath before following and joining him next to a lift, which was open and waiting for us. "This way" he steps in, the guards standing each side of the doors, not joining us.
I caught a glimpse of a smile on his face as I silently followed him, making sure to keep an eye on my surroundings. The lift takes us upwards, only stopping at what I presume is the top floor, the doors opening into a wide lobby.
I can hear the chatter of at least two other males and follow Leo as he strides forward, only to come to a stop as I see Viri's dad sat talking with two others, I scan their features another cousin and an uncle I surmise.
I know I've got to grab back some control, or our time with Viri will be at risk. I step forward and hold out my hand "Mr Waters, its nice to meet you"
Again I hide my smile as they share a look between them before Mr Waters gets up, his grasp tight on mine "Raven Steele" he replies, tightening his grip before letting go.
He turns to face the others in the room "This is Viri's Uncle Luka and his son Dominic and you have already met Leo" I incline my head their way in greeting. "Sit down" he instructs and I take one of the armchairs watching the men in the room watching me.
Its Leo and Dominic that break the stare off "I like him" Dominic states to his brother who punches him in the arm.
"Why?" his father asks curiously.
"Come off it Pa, look at him, its obvious he's not comfortable but he's not scared of us, he's watching and confident. I bet he'll manage Viri just fine"

"Damn it Dom, will you stop giving my daughter away"
"Come off it Uncle Gus, you've read the reports and I almost agree with Dom, he was cool as a cucumber in the car, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of hearing him out" Leo adds
Viri's father shook his head at them before looking back at me. "Tell me how you met my daughter"
"We shared a desk in the library" I reply
"And your brothers?" he asks and I realise we will be here all day at this rate.
"Sir, with respect , how about I just tell you what is going on"
There's a snort of laughter from one of the cousins but I keep my gaze on her father. He raises his hand indicating I have the floor. I take a deep breath and hope my gut is right this time as I tell them everything...
"And she likes all four of you?" he questions when I finish.
I nod, "Yes sir I believe she does, for the reasons I have just explained I got lucky that my brothers agreed it should be me, but she has told me she is open to seeing where this leads"
"And you boys are good with that?"
I can understand his confusion, after all its wasn't something I had or any of us had ever thought of before. "Yes Sir, we are"
Her Uncle leaned forward "Tell me more about St John, is he a risk to her?"
I explain briefly about his problem with Jett and what had happened this morning, Her cousins were leaning in listening and when her father looked at them and said "Deal with it" I almost felt sorry for Jamison when with that one short sentence I knew he would be receiving a visit from her cousins in the very near future.
"And the others?" I asked carefully, it was one thing knowing who they were and what they were capable of, but another telling them what to do.
"That one may need a little more investigating, you just keep on doing what you are doing and we will take care of the rest" her father replies, exchanging a look with Luka and the boys.
"And us?"
His gaze narrows before he sighs "My daughter can be a force to be reckoned with, she made us all promise to let her do her own thing here, she would not be happy to know I am here. I trust my daughter to make her own choices but we have sheltered from the worst of life and nothing will stop me doing all I can to protect her"
"Sir, we will look after her" I try to reassure him.
My phone starts ringing in my pocket and as I pull it out, Leo is there and takes it from my hand.
"Hey" I snap at him as he looks at the screen questioningly.
"When did she get a phone?" he glares at me.
"I was worried about her and wanted her to be able to contact me if she felt unsafe, she has one of my old ones, that's all she would accept and then we had to push it on her" I tell him as the phone stops ringing before starting up again almost immediately.
"I was supposed to meet them all for lunch" I groan, spotting the time. "Let me answer it, or she will worry" I hold my hand out but he takes a step back and answers it.
"Dee Dee?" he says with a grin.
"Leo, tell me you haven't hurt him?" I hear her gasp out, I hear my brothers voices raised in concern and its sounds like they are moving, I watch with narrowed eyes as Leo paces back and forth with my phone in his hand.
"Put my cousin back on the phone now, or so help me God you will be sorry" Leo's voice echoes around the room.
"Leo, what have you done?" Her voice is sounding stronger, madder. "Where is Raven"
I hold my hand out to him and he grins before putting the phone in it, I look at her father and he shakes his head, I take that to mean he doesn't want her to know he is here.
"Viri, it's okay, I'm okay" I tell her softly.
"Where are you" she questions, "Why are you with Leo?"
I look at the men in the room, wondering how much to tell her. Instead I deflect the question. "Are you with my brothers?"
"Yes" she whispers out. "Raven?" I can hear the worry in her voice and can see how it is making the other men with me feel guilty.
"Viri, I promise you I am okay, he had some questions about what was going on, I will be back shortly, I will be back before you finish classes" I tell her calmly.
"Promise" her voice is so soft I almost don't hear her.
"I promise and while I'm gone, my brothers will look after you."
Leo catches my eye and holds up his own phone, muttering 'soon' but I understand what he is telling me, "Leo says he will see you soon and he has this number now."
I cut off the line, glaring now at the men in the room. "We have two hours before I need to be back on campus, What else do you need to know?"

Iron and Wood - A Tale Of Empire and Clans
For centuries, the Midlands had been split into fragments. A once glorious, united Empire has become a shadow of its former self. Unity has not returned, and not for the lack of trying. The greatest of these successor states were the Li Dynasty to the south, the rulers of old, and the Emerald Empire to the North, with its vibrant vitality. Unity is the end goal, and both will sacrifice anything to attain this elusive dream. For unity would surely solve the conflict that had long plagued this once prosperous continent. The Ironwood Clan was a prime player. Some would consider them the ones holding the reigns to the horse named 'Unification'. Iron and wood were the backbones of civilization; similarly, the Ironwoods were the backbones of the Northern Empire, and by extension, the people of the Midlands. Their methods, as questionable as they might be, had strengthened the North. Yet, were they enough? In the midst of it all, a young Ironwood who had lost his path must once again find his way. For the sake of his own wellbeing; for the sake of his clan; and for the sake of the Empire and its subjects. However, is he willing to sacrifice for the good of all? Is he willing to condemn some for the sake of others? Is he willing to make the right, albeit harsh, decisions? Only the heavens would know. Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, events and incidents are the products of the author’s imagination. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental. Additionally, any views and beliefs expressed by the characters are not the author's own. The story is also not an endorsement of any actions taken within. The 'profanity' and 'sexual content' warning tags are there to be safe (and to leave room for potential future changes), but for now these two things are not inside this novel. This is my take on 'cultivation', though it might be somewhat disconnected from the general idea of the genre. Release schedule: Two chapters a week. The cover was created using wombo art. While I believe that creations using the app are in the public domain, if that is not the case, I will take it down.
