《SINNER - Klaus Mikaelson》SIX

The next day they climbed up the side of Mount Rainer, with Stefan carrying Ray slung over his back. After a little torture topped with wolfsbane, Ray had no choice but to give up the location of his pack. He was smart, at least somewhat smart and knew Klaus would never leave him alone until he did.

There was not a single word spoken between the original hybrid and Adeline since the night before. She would glance over at him coldly and he would do the same but neither of them dared to say a word.

Stefan had picked up on the tension around them and figured it has something to do with Klaus almost letting her get murder but still he didn't like it. He didn't like the way Klaus looked at Adeline, it made his skin crawl. But for now, he had to ignore it. They had things to do. Stefan knew his best shot at him and Adeline returning home was to help Klaus get the Hybrids he desired.

"What the hell is going on?" Stefan questioned. Rays eyes were dripping with blood and it didn't seem like his transition wasn't going as planned. Klaus's face tensed with anger.

"This isn't right." He muttered underneath his breath, shaking his head and pressing his fingers against his temples. "This shouldn't be happening!" He shouted— his voice rang so loud it echoed off the trees.

Stefan and Adeline glanced at each other, both coming to the realization at the that Elena being alive may have something to do with Klaus's failure.

Klaus looked up at the sky and yelled at the top of his lungs. It was a cry of frustration— a cry of someone who thought they had it all figured out finally after decades of searching but was wrong.

One of the hybrids in transition took off when Klaus was preoccupied with his own emotions. They sprinted down the mountain at a speed so quick Adeline could barely see them. The veins popped out of Klaus's face and his knuckles turned white as he clenched his fist at his sides.

"I'll get him." Stefan offered.

"Fine— but you better not try and make a run for it." Klaus warned.

"Come on Addy." Stefan gestured toward the blonde standing off to the side of chaos with her arms crossed over her chest.

"No." Klaus sternly protested. "The girl stays."

"It's dangerous right here— with all these rabid hybrids." Stefan said, giving Klaus a pointed look.

Klaus became a blur as he moved towards Stefan and gripped his shirt.

"I think I'm more suited to protect the girl then you." Klaus breathed through gritted teeth. "Afterall, I am an original and you're just.... you."

Stefan remained hard as stone standing in front of Klaus, neither of them wanting to be the first to break the stare. That was until something clearly caught Stefans attention.

"Fine." He tossed his hands up in defeat. "I'll just go."

"That's what I thought." Klaus mocked and Stefan took off down the mountain side.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Stefan slammed Damon against a tree— waiting for a response from his idiotic brother. "You can't be here. For one, Klaus will kill you if he sees you. Two, it's a full moon and these woods are full of wolves!"

"Show a little gratitude brother. I'm here for you— and Adeline of course." He replied. "Where is she anyway?"

"With Klaus, just up the mountain." Stefan spoke lowly. "And I think you would have a better chance stealing me away from Klaus then Addy."

Damon gave his brother a confused glance. He wasn't sure what he meant. Klaus surely had more use of for vampire, especially one known as the ripper of Monterey then he did a ordinary girl.

"What do you mean by that?" Damon questioned.

"I'm — I'm not sure yet." Stefan admitted. "There is just something ... off about Klaus."

"Well duh— the ancient guy is certifiably insane." Damon scoffed.

"I'm serious Damon." Stefan growled, slamming his brother up against the tree once more. "You need to leave. I will protect Addy— I will get her home when I can but for now, leave Damon."

He wanted to argue, he wanted to put up a fight to save his brother and bring him back with him now. He could see the shift in his eyes— he could tell he was on human blood again and close to losing himself but he could also tell he was serious. He wouldn't come with him, no matter what Damon did.

"Fine— but you two find a way home soon brother." Damon breathed.

One by one the Hybrids Klaus attempted to sire began to bleed profusely, unable to feed and then— they died. A pile of dead, lifeless bodies laid amongst them. Adeline turned her head away. She preferred to look towards the mountain then spend another second staring at the blood and mess Klaus made.

"It just doesn't make sense." Klaus muttered under his breath, walking around the bodies with blood tripping off his chin. The ones that didn't die on their own— he killed. He ripped there hearts out and slung them to the ground. They were uncontrollable, an abomination. They weren't like Klaus, his transition was seamless.

Klaus was right— something was wrong.

"You know something." Klaus suddenly spoke, directing his words at Adeline. He rushed up behind her, grabbing her shoulders and forcing her to face him.

"What?" She questioned, her voice was shaking. Of course she knew something. She knew Elena was still alive and she knew that was probably the reason behind the failed Hybrids. It was in this moment she was thanking her lucky stars she had been ingesting vervain and not just wearing it as a bracelet.

"You know something." Klaus repeated. "I am not a fool. I saw the way you and Stefan looked at each other when my hybrids began to fail." He stared Adeline down, searching for an answer in her expression. He knew he couldn't compel her, not with how she drank vervain. He would have to change that soon. "Unless it isn't that you know something— maybe it's that Stefan and you have been fucking in secret. Is that what the stolen glances are about?"

Adeline'a blood boiled with rage, she didn't like Klaus suggesting she would simply fuck anyone. She was not that kind of girl. She also wondered what it mattered to him if they had? She wanted to slap him, to deny it but she also didn't want him to think she knew something about the hybrid failure either. That could be worse— that could put Elena's life back in danger.

"So what if we were?" She provoked. "That's none of your damn business."

Klaus was ready to explode. He was ready to show his emotions and put it all on the line. The thought of Stefans hands on Adeline made him hot with fury. The thought of them together, under his roof made him want to rip the head off Stefans body and watch the light fade from his eyes.

"I guess I was wrong about you." Klaus replied, coldly— there was no emotion left in his eyes. "I thought you were a good girl— a girl with self respect. Turns out your no more than a slut who fucks her friends boyfriend before her body is even cold."

Adeline lifted up her hand and swung it towards his face, ready to slap him but of course she wasn't quick enough. Klaus wrapped his hand around her wrist, stopping the blow from reaching his face. He squeezed her arm inside his hand, digging into her skin and closed the gap between them until he was inches from her face.

"Nice try sweetheart." He whispered. "Not even close."

Stefan walked back up to the join the fighting pair, with the rogue wolf sprawled over his shoulders. He propped him down on the ground to the join the others. He cautiously watched Klaus and Adeline as they were locked into a deadly stare, boring into each others eyes with anger.

"He's dead." Stefan announced, deciding to interrupt the feud. "What happened here?" he gestured to the now deceased pack of hybrids gone wrong.

"It didn't work is what happened." Klaus snapped. "They either died on there own or I killed them."

"Great— so this was all one big waste of time." Stefan scoffed. "Can we go home now?"

"No." Klaus quickly answered. "We're going to see an old friend of mine."

By the end of the day the trio was back on Klaus's jet and headed to God only knew where. The hybrid had barely spoke since they left the mountain top. He was preoccupied, worrying about why something he had been working towards most his life was a failing him.

"What happened between you and Klaus when I was gone?" Stefan whispered, finally asking the question that had been bothering him since he saw them on top of the mountain.

"He was asking questions — about if I knew something." She whispered. She didn't have to say anymore. Stefan already knew Klaus had a hunch the two of them knew more than they were letting on. "But instead I made him think we were sleeping together."

"Wait — what?" Stefan gasped, staring at Adeline with wide eyes.

"He went there and I just ran with it. Better than the alternative." She shrugged. Stefan knew she was right, better that then him knowing the truth about Elena but then again, was it better for Stefan that way? Safer?

"Why would he even ask that? I mean... what's it to him?" Stefan queried.

"I asked the same thing— but of course I didn't get any real answers from him." She huffed.

Stefan nodded and let the conversation die. This only furthered his suspicions about Klaus's motive when it came to Adeline.

*****

Chicago— another place Adeline had never been but now, here she was. They were strolling the streets of the Windy City, walking along the sidewalk, following behind Klaus.

The Hybrid led them to a bar with a neon sign that read "Gloria's". She wasn't sure what they were doing at yet another bar, but if it was anything like the last time— it wouldn't be pretty.

When they walked inside, it was empty.

"We're closed." A voice called from behind the bar. She didn't bother to look up at the group until Klaus spoke.

"Oh come on Gloria— that's no way to welcome an old friend." He grinned.

Her eyes shot up and landed on Klaus. At first Adeline couldn't tell if she was horrified or happy to see him, but then she smiled.

"Klaus Mikaelson." she replied. "How longs it been?"

"To long lovely." He flirted, walking over to the edge of the bar.

"I think I can guess what you are doing here." She rolled her eyes.

"Oh yeah?" He questioned.

"A vampire wolf hybrid on the mission to make other Hybrids? Oh yeah, that kind of news travels fast." She scoffed. "So what went wrong?"

Klaus shook his head and a devilish grin took over his face.

"You know me to well Gloria." He admitted. "It's not working— all my hybrids are dying in transition. I followed the ritual perfectly, I broke the curse."

"Clearly, you didn't." She replied. "Something was missed or it would be working."

Klaus didn't like the answer he received and neither did Adeline. She knew that this conversation was going to lead to Klaus asking the witch to find out what he missed and that could lead to Elena. She glanced over at Stefan but he was already looking at her.

"I can help you figure it out." Gloria offered. "But I'd need to contact the original witch."

"So do it then." Klaus ordered.

"It's not that easy— I need a gateway to be able to speak with her. Your sister has what I need." She answered. "So, where is Rebekah?"

"I guess I'll have to go get my dear sister." Klaus grinned.

*****

A warehouse— that is where they ended up when they left Glorias bar. Adeline didn't understand why Klaus's sister would be here until they walked up to a coffin with a daggered girl desiccating inside.

"She deserved it." Klaus said, smirking at Adeline before he ripped the dagger from her chest.

They were waiting for Rebekah to wake up and Adeline could tell Stefans mind was racing. Not only did we have to come up with a way for Klaus not to find out about Elena once he got what he needed from Rebekah but Stefan had found a picture of Klaus and him from the 1920's he couldn't remember anything about.

"It's okay Stefan.." Adeline hushed. "We will figure it out."

"How could I not remember him?" Stefan questioned, shaking his head.

"Because I made it so." Klaus interrupted. "Now stop whispering. I don't like secrets." He glared at Adeline, and she returned the look.

There was a thud of a body hitting the ground from the back of the warehouse and within seconds Rebekah followed the voices and dashed up to the group in a old gown with blood dropping from her face.

"Where am I Nik?" She questioned. "What year is it? And who is— wait, Stefan?"

Klaus walked in front of Stefan and placed his hands on his shoulders, locking eyes with him. "Now you remember."

"Rebekah?" Stefan questioned. It was like a light went off in his head. Adeline could tell he now recognized the girl.

"Stefan." She smiled.

"We were— friends." Stefan muttered, looking at Klaus.

"We are friends mate." He grinned.

Adeline was now feeling extremely lost and out of the loop. Clearly the three of them had history, from long before she was even born. Rebekah turned her attention to the blonde girl standing awkwardly beside the Salvatore.

"Who's she?" Rebekah snarked, sniffing at Addy. "Dear God Nik — she's human. What are you doing with her?"

"She's just collateral sister. Keeping her as payback from those who tried to cross me back in Mystic Falls." Klaus answered, glancing over as Adeline who had now shrunken even lower. As if being called a slut wasn't bad enough, she now felt like a piece of a trash.

Rebekah circled around Adeline, taking in her appearance and clothes.

"She's pretty." Rebekah admitted. "I hate it. Can I kill her Nik?"

"Sister — behave yourself." He warned. Adeline was surprised he didn't just let his sister kill her.

Rebekah wasn't happy with Klaus's answer but she accepted it. She knew better than to argue with her brother.

"Now— lovely sister. I need to contact the original witch and Gloria tells me you are in possession of what I need to do so." Klaus said.

"Yeah, it's my—" she gasped after reaching for her neck and realizing it was bare. "Where's my necklace?"

"How would I know?" Klaus rolled his eyes. "Don't tell me that's what she needs?"

It was exactly what was needed to contact the original witch and Stefan knew right where it was. Adeline hadn't connected the pieces yet, she didn't know about the necklace that Stefan had given Elena.

"Let's get Gloria to do a locator spell on it. Then we can find it." Rebekah suggested. "But first — I need new clothes."

"Fine." Klaus huffed. "Let's go."

Klaus and his sister walked ahead of Stefan and Adeline. While they were walking, Stefan put his hand on Adelines arms to get her attention. She looked over at the vampire and saw the desperation in his eyes.

"We can't let them find that necklace." He mouthed.

"Where is it Stefan?" Adeline questioned.

"Elena..." he whispered.

"Oh god—" addy gasped. "Okay. We can think of something."

*****

After several boutiques later, Rebekah was finally done shopping. It was dark by the time they were headed back to Glorias bar. Stefan decided to suggest the group have a little fun in Chicago instead of being all business, he said they should go for a drink like old times.

It took a little bit of work for Stefan and Rebekah to convince Klaus to take a little break but he finally reluctantly agreed.

They walked into a fancy bar that was crowded with people. Klaus got them a table in the VIP section and the drinks started coming faster than Adeline could handle. She was drinking with vampires— being the only human. They downed shot after shot and Adeline decided to try and keep up. She wanted to have a little fun, at least while she could. She had been nothing but stressed and miserable.

She stood up to grab another shot off the table and stumbled over her own feet.

"Woah there." Stefan laughed, grabbing Adeline by the waist to keep her steady. Klaus looked over at them and twitched with anger as Stefan touched Adeline. "Maybe slow it down?"

"Don't baby the girl Stefan." Rebekah retorted jealously. "If she can't keep up, that's her problem."

"Oh I can keep up." Adeline smirked, and stared at Rebekah as she tossed another shot into her mouth—the liquor burned down her throat. She was lying, she couldn't keep up. She was becoming completely wasted but she wanted to stick it to the snobby sister.

Adeline couldn't help herself, she had to steal a glance at Klaus who to her surprise was already staring at her. It looked like he was angry she was drinking so much, or jealous of how close Stefan was standing to her. She decided she would have fun with this, and smirked at the original.

Klaus rolled his tongue around the inside of his mouth as he watched both Stefan and Adeline have a hushed conversation across from him. He was trying to make out what they were saying but the music was to loud.

"What's the — the — what's the plan man?" Adeline slurred. She was drunk now— totally and completely drunk. Stefan had never seen Addy this way, she was always proper and put together. He wished he could enjoy it but he had to stay proactive.

"Addy— you're drunk. Don't speak anything about a plan." Stefan whispered. "You could accidentally say to much. The alcohol will impair your judgement."

"I know what alcohol does Stefan." She scoffed, still slurring every word she spoke.

Neither of them were paying enough attention to realize Klaus and Rebekah had approached them. Stefan caught on early that something was off with them but Adeline was blissfully unaware in her drunken state.

"What's up scary original siblings?" Adeline laughed. Stefan looked over at her with a stare that told her to shut up.

"Rebekah here tells me something off is about the two of you." Klaus accused, looking between the two.

"I don't trust them brother." Rebekah added. "Tell us what you're hiding."

Adeline swallowed hard, she wasn't thinking clearly and didn't know how to get them out of this predicament. All she could do was hope Stefan had some ideas because her mind was blank.

"Speak!" Klaus ordered and Stefan stared at him blankly. No words were forming.

Adeline decided the only way out of this, at least

temporarily was a distraction. She turned to Stefan and grabbed his face in her hands then smashed her lips against his, kissing him right in front of the siblings.

When the kiss broke she turned to them "That is what is going on." She smirked. "Come on Stefan, let's go dance."

Both Rebekah and Klaus were enraged by the kiss. Rebekah had fallen for Stefan before she was daggered in the twenties and hated the girl for touching him as it all still felt fresh to her. Klaus still wasn't sure why, but the kiss set a fire off inside him.

He picked up a drink off the table and tossed it back with ease as he watched the pair stroll on to the dance floor.
