《Born in Flames / / C. Volturi》{20 Power Play}

Edward Cullen
Edward had heard the horror stories that the Power of the Volturi had conjured up over the years, however, he was too foolish to truly believe them. But now he was trapped in their lair he had slowly begun to reevaluate his priorities.
"Enough" Jane called, her voice was strong and authoritative despite her child-like appearance "Aro sent me to see what's taking so long" he snapped before turning to walk away.
"Just do as she says" whispered Alice,
"Don't be scared" Edward whispered to Bella.
"Are you?" She replied, nervous at the idea of what could happen.
"No" He sounded confident, believing that his relation to Carlisle could save him.
Jane scoffed at the members of the Cullen clan, clearly repulsed by Edward himself the most.
.The tension was thick and highly uncomfortable, with an unspoken understanding that whatever was about to happen wasn't going to be ending happily. The elevator seemed even more claustrophobic due to the open hostility of the Volturi, Edward knew that what he did was wrong, but he never actually committed the crime, so he was naively hoping and almost confident in the fact that they would be walking out the castle that day.
As they were escorted through the foyer they were greeted by a friendly-looking Italian woman, Edward had knowledge of the Volturi secretaries and almost pitied the women.
"Is she human?" Bella asked.
"Yes." Edward was rather blunt in his response.
"Does she know?" Bella continued.
"Yes." This time he seemed almost reluctant to reply.
"Then why would...she wants to be" Bella finally put the puzzle together.
"And so she will be" came Demetri's smooth interruption.
"Or dessert" Jane smirked to herself, the conversation falling silent as they come to a set of rather large glossy looking oak doors into the same marble room that Edward had been pleading for death in but moments earlier.
He needed no introduction to the four monarchs sat before him as Aro knowingly smiled at his returning presence.
"What a happy surprise! Bella is alive after all. Isn't that wonderful, I love a happy ending they are so rare" came Aro's joyous celebration as he took Edward's hand.
Bella Swan
"La tua cantante" His eyes lighting up in wonder "Her blood appeals to you so much. It makes me thirsty. How can you stand to be so close to her?" His voice was soft and smooth, a direct result of Aro's preferred theatrics.

"It's not without difficulty" Edward croaked with an almost snarky undertone.
"yes, I can see that" Aro continued to hold Edward's hand eyes moving as if he were searching for something.
"Aro can read every thought I've ever had with one touch" Edward explained to Bella, before turning back to the vampire before him "Well now you know everything so get on with it" he finished.
"You are quite a soul reader yourself, Edward. Though you can't read Bella's thoughts. Fascinating" Aro's eyes flicked between Edward's and Bella's. The human could only feel unsettled by the sheer calmness of his voice and the look in his eyes as she cowered next to Alice.
"I would love to see if you are an exception to my gifts as well" Aro walked calmly into the centre of the room, just out of Bella's reach so she would have to leave Edward. "Would you do me the honour?" Aro asked as he held out his hand. Slowly as if parting him would cause her great pain did Bella finally walk over and take his hand. In the discomfort of the situation could Bella feel a piercing gaze upon her very soul, but too scared to look up she kept her eyes cemented to her own hand held tightly in Aro's.
"Interesting" He chuckled "I see nothing" and he swiftly let go of her hand and walked closer to the thrones. "I wonder if...Let us see if she is immune to all our powers. Shall we, Jane?" He looked over expectantly.
"No" Edward cried.
"Pain" and before Edward could move much closer he crumpled to the floor in agony, veins that shouldn't be working were straining around his face and neck as his sickly pale skin lightly tinted purple. Alec held her hostage as Demetri ran to secure Alice in place before anyone could dare make a move against Jane.
"Stop. Don't please stop. Stop! Just stop hurting him, please. Please!" Bella screamed desperately trying to escape Alec's hold as Alice tried to comfort Edward on the floor.
"Jane?" Called Aro.
"Master?" Her voice was innocent as if she wasn't just torturing a man with her mere gaze.
"Go ahead, my dear" He waved calmly.
"This may hurt just a little" Her subtly smile returned to her face. However the longer she looked the more her smile twisted into a frown as nothing happened to Bella. The moment was interrupted by Aro's sharp gleeful laughter.

"I have an idea" Called the silky smooth voice of a woman, Bella shifted her eyes only to be met with the sight of the fiery-haired woman from the painting in the Cullen household. Her eyes held a far worse intensity in person, something Bella never knew could be so powerful. It was the same burning lingering when she had left the painting. Smiling Aro waved his hand to allow the woman to begin her plans. The true fear struck Bella's heart when she saw Edward out the corner of her eyes completely stop fighting Felix. As if he knew what was about to happen would be unavoidable.
Adela glanced at Bella barely looking at her, but this small condescending glance was enough to make Bella feel like something had been stripped from her very soul, something that she didn't even know was there.
"Jane?" she called lovingly towards the blonde vampire, completely deceiving Bella of what would happen in the next few moments. A white-hot fiery pain like nothing Bella had experienced before began to crawl through her veins. The intensity of the sensation wiped all thoughts and feeling from the girl as she could do nothing but bear the pain on her body. She couldn't even acknowledge her own screaming until the pain had stopped she could feel the rawness of her throat.
"Remarkable" He clapped. "She a human with a psychic shield. So, what do we do with you now?" He questioned with misleading excitement.
"You already know what you are going to do, Aro" Came Marcus' dull voice.
"She knows too much, She's a liability" Caius chimed in, he and his mate pleased at the turn of events.
"That's true" Aro sighed with a false sense of pity
"Felix" Alec turned Bella to face the towering vampire as she was rendered paralysed at the events unfolding, finally realising that she could die.
"No!" Edward cried as he attempted to fight off Felix. Faster than what Bella's eyes could catch Edward was slammed into the marble floors with cracks lining his face. Alice also tried to fight but just as fast Demetri who had been loosely holding her captive tightened his hand around her throat to stop her attempt. Edward soon made a second dash for Felix but just as quickly he was thrown into the marble steps with Felix soon holding him up by the neck ready for execution in front of the monarchy.
"Please no! please please!" Bella screeched, "Kill me, kill me not him" She pleaded. Aro quickly stopped Felix from killing Edward as he turned to face Bella, his movements were almost predatory as he stalked down the steps towards the mortal girl.
"How extraordinary, you would give up your life for someone like us? A vampire. A soulless monster" Aro looked at Bella with a sense of morbid curiosity.
"Just get away from her" Edward chocked out still in Felix's hold.
"You don't know a thing about his soul" she fought.
"Forse. Ne il vostro l'uno o altro" Aro muttered seemingly to himself. "This is a sadness, if only it were your intention to giver her immortality" But before anything could happen to her Alice cried out from Demetri's arms. "Wait! Bella will be one of us, I've seen it. I'll change her myself" Edward fell slack on the giant's hold as he was faced with the reality of the situation. Aro rushed over and took her hand as Demetri let her go.
"Mesmerising to see what you have seen before it has happened" He moved over to Bella and put his hand delicately on her chin. "Still, even if your gifts cannot surpass those of our dear Adela, it will be interesting to see what becomes of you. Go now make your preparations" Aro waved them off clearly no longer interested in the Cullens.
"Let us be done with this, Heidi will be done any moment. Thank you for your visit" Marcus bid them goodbye, standing from his throne.
"We will return the favour I would advise that you follow through with your promise soon. We do not offer second chances" Caius spit with pure venom, as Bella looked back at the mated pair on their thrones she was yet again met with the heart-stopping glare of Adela. Thinking better than to keep looking she turned to swiftly bury her face into Edward's arm.
"Goodbye, my young friends" Was the last thing Aro said to the group before they were escorted out by both Felix and Demetri.
As previously I found what was translated for twilight. "Forse. Ne il vostro l'uno o altro" which means "Perhaps. Not yours either", Thank you for reading~

Among other things, a story about growth, grit, and being better than the person you were yesterday. Here's my rambling on why I'm writing Journey West 5000. Journey West 5000 is my crazy ambitious writing project to adapt a classic epic called "Journey to the West" for a global, modern audience. It's a sci-fi story disguised as fantasy, and has some road trip + monster of the week elements (as does the original Journey to the West). No system, definitely no harem, gradual power progression. Hmm, what else can I put here so potential readers know what to expect? My writing style for now is mostly "show don't tell", because I believe that readers don't need to have everything pointed out to them, and that they should be allowed to make up their own minds about characters based on the actions of those characters. I'm also trying to be less long-winded (a weakness pointed out by some friends) in order to write according to something Neil Gaiman said, which is to write as though I'm the one who has to pay for every word, not the reader. This will bring down my chapter word counts, and might drive away potential readers, but I believe there's value in learning to compress and be concise. All chapters posted here will have been edited. Constructive criticism, comments, and feedback would be very much welcome and appreciated. Please, please help point out any typos or grammatical mistakes, I'm striving to minimize those as much as possible. Above all, I hope you enjoy my story.
