《The New Alpha》Chapter 31

This is the best thing to do. I repeat this to myself as I walk out of my bedroom and down the stairs. I decide it's easier to assume he knew about me all along...it's not his fault. He didn't know his love for me was because of what I am. One day his true mate will come and he will be- I can't finish that thought.
One thing I can't leave unfinished is the murder of Lucian, May, and my unborn cousin...but that will have to be a different day. It's time to get smart. It's to risky to get my revenge right now...but one day I will avenge them. I sneak out to the back door. My eyes linger up at the window on Maddox. I see his brown eyes turned down in sadness, his lips parted as he lets out an order, strong hands shaking...a part of my heart hurts knowing I'll never see him again but the other part is glad. Hoping if I never see him again I'll never have to think if he was involved with May and Lucians death. My lingering eyes shift to the dense forest. Maybe my parents will help me get out of town. It's the least they can do after dropping this on me.
I quickly slip in past the tree line. Disappearing from the packs view. The trees calm me. The cool air whips past my hair and cools my skin. I sigh and try not to focus on what's behind me. Literally. No more thinking about Maddox or Lena or Peter. The only thing I can think about it getting out of town and running from alphas for the rest of my life, or at least until I can figure out to hide my scent forever.
I almost reach their house before I hear whispers. My first instinct is to get out of sight and run but then I recognize the voice. My heart pounds and I quietly slip closer.
"Listen to me boy, we need to find her now!" Maddox's fathers voice grows angrier with each word
"I know, have you seen Maddox? He's a mess. Almost like she's really his mate" Jax says and looks away from his father in thought
"Either way we did not kill the alpha and luna of this pack for nothing! We must find her before some other alphas takes her for his own! She will be Maddox's and he will have the most powerful pups of all time" by now he's pissed and the last part of my heart is broken
I feel rage engulf my entire being and I feel myself shifting but right before I can I feel a hand on my shoulder. I gasp but it's covered by another hand. Fear over takes my rage but as soon as I turn around I'm met by Victoria. I raise an eyebrow, extremely surprised to see her "what are you doing?" I mouth afraid they will hear

"Come with me" she mouths back
I fight going but she pulls me along. Once we are out of earshot even for a werewolf she faces me "Eve you can't" she tells me
Fire erupts "what do you mean! You heard what they said! They killed them" angry and sad tears roll down my cheeks
"I know, I know" even tears blur her vision "but by you exploding on them, two very trained alphas, you would be harmed or even killed" she tells me
"I don't care!" I scream and she covers my mouth again
"Stop, we will get our revenge but right now I'm trying to help you" she tells me
Again I raise an eyebrow "why?" I ask her
"Because I-" she rolls her eyes "it doesn't matter. Do you want to get out of town or not?" It's like she read my mind "mom was talking to me and didn't know what you were going to do...she was worried about you" she says like she's trying to convince me "she gave me the idea"
"Ok" is all I can say
She brings a backpack around her shoulders that I hadn't noticed. While she is distracted looking through the bag I turn around. We are out of sight from the men I want to show the same pain they did to my family. But if I want to survive I've have to save my revenge.
She takes out a wad of cash "where did you get that?" I ask eyes wide
"Mom and dads stash, they can ground me later" she shrugs "there's cash, a bus ticket that'll basically take you anywhere, some clothes, a burner phone and other things you might need. You could always go to our cousins pack, they are in Colorado. Remember Luke?" She says and I nod
"I can't go to another pack...I need to disappear" I tell her and she nods understanding "Why do you have all of this?" I ask
"This was my run away bag but you have a better use for it now" she says with a small apologetic smile "I can get you past the barrier but after that...you're on your own. The bus station is two miles north, just follow the first road you get to"
I nod and she smiles softly. I remember the days when we were close and played in the yard together, made forts, and had 'sleepovers'. Before Scar she was my best friend. When she found out what happened to our mother she changed.
"Ok we better go, Alphas wolves are everywhere but I know the back way out" she says winking her hazel eye and handing me the backpack. I throw it over my shoulder as she turns to walk away.
At the thought of Maddox still looking for me my chest hurt and my throat tighten "Eve come on" she says and my feet finally detach from the ground. We walk to the very edge of the pack and a young werewolf comes into view. My heart speeds up "don't worry stay here" she says "and Everly?" She whispers

I look over to her "yeah?"
"Call me when you get to the bus station...you don't have to tell me where you're going but-" I cut her off with a smile feeling my heart warm just a little at the one person who I thought hated me the most
"I will" I say and she smiles shyly, not used to being kind to me
She stands and I hide behind the thick trees and bushes "Hey Jason" Victoria says stepping right out, fluffing up her dirty blonde hair
He turns around and his tense face relaxes just a little "Victoria what are you doing here?" He says
He's handsome, blonde hair, tan skin, very dark eyes and lean body. "Just thought I'd come to visit" she says with a charming radiant smile
"This probably isn't the best time, Alpha has all of us on high alert looking for that Everly girl" he tells her "we just had to usher those other alphas out of here, Caleb and Jake are driving them back to there own pack" he says but then whispers "did you hear about that other alpha?"
"No what happened?" She asks
"I heard he went in the alphas room and was messing around with some of Eves things and he freaked out and now they have him locked up or something" he says and Victoria hums
"Wow that's crazy" she says but seems bored "anyways" her tone changes "I had a really good time the other night" she smirks and his face drops as her arms wraps around his neck
"Ye-yeah me to" he smiles and leans into her
She kisses him deeply and I feel the need to look away but then her hand waves me over from behind her back and I quietly come out of the protective layer of woods and slip past them. I pass the barrier and keep going. By the time I look back Victoria has stopped her make out session and is looking at me. The boy still distracted by her. She frowns and mouths 'good luck'
I keep running. Running away from the place I've been my whole life...and the place I can never come back to.
I start to slow down when I see the road up ahead. I take a deep breath and head north. I stay behind the tree line, unknowing of who sits in the cars that pass by. My feet ache by the time I see a sign telling me the bus station is half a mile away. The walk gives me time to think...the one thing I don't want to do. Now that the adrenaline has worn off I feel empty and my chest aches. I've learned too much in the past two days...no way did I ever imagine my 18th birthday going like this. But maybe, for now at least, I have to leave all of that behind and focus on what or rather where I go next.
I think about all the places I've wanted to go and see. Maybe I'll go to Florida, lay out on a beach somewhere and forget all my worries. Or New York, not very many werewolves live up there, too many humans and not enough woods. Or I'll ride the bus until I can't ride it any longer and see where I end up.
It's a small bus station. Not very many people and the ones who are here wear worn out clothes, most are smoking cigarettes and sitting on their luggage, waiting for the bus to arrive. One girl looks a little older than me, she looks afraid and only one bag sits at her feet. Everyone here has a story of there own- some running, some with a destination, and some just going where the wind takes them. I walk up to a sliding glass door that doesn't open until you are directly in front of it. The small lobby isn't air conditioner and smells of BO and a little like mold. I look around to find one lady sitting behind a desk protected by clear plastic with a small opening. She's probably in her late 50's. Her hair is purmed and graying at the roots. She smacks on a piece of gum and her chewing gets louder as I get closer.
"Excuse me?" I say softly and she looks up from the old computer, large glasses rest on the tip of her nose. She doesn't say anything so I slip her the bus ticket under the small opening
She takes it and looks it over, squinting her eyes "bus 7 will be arriving again in thirty minutes. It has 5 stops, listed on the ticket. From those stops you can reach three major cities. From the looks of you-" she pauses and stamps the ticket, sliding it back over to me "you don't look like you've got a destination. Just go out the door to the left and it'll be the second sign."
I don't reply I just take the ticket and walk away. The doors don't even open this time so I take the manual door beside it. The fresh air is much better than that stuffy room. I do as instructed and walk down to the second sign. 5 other people sit or stand waiting for the same bus.
I don't know where I'm going or where I'll end up...as long as I leave this place behind me.

Fallout: Vault X
An original novel set in the Fallout universe, written to be accessible to all, featuring unique people and places. Vol.II. out now Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John. A vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground. Like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that survived The Great War of the atomic age. Hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions. Year after year, decade upon decade. All to expand into the natural cave system the Vault occupied, building for the future. However, John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he’d been taught was a lie. After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy. An arm mounted personal computer, worn by everyone in the Vault. Used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice. To learn the craft that would be his life’s work. A noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race. A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore. That almost everyone around him wore. His looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen. And capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts. The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones. The Red Valley fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell. The clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills. All spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here. Trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red. Along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors. The scavengers of the old world were inventive, hardy people. All determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged. They grew, spreading along the valley floor. Reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland. Salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls and work their fields. To protect them in the dark of the wasteland. But such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value. And the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed. The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military. The Brotherhood used its access to the weapons made for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes. Men and women were equipped with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry. Accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters and set up outputs far and wide. All dedicated to a single purpose. To ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Namely, any hands that were not their own. This is the world John escaped into. A place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire. A place where survival meant battling against the darkness. Fighting a war each day to get to the next. And war...war never changes
