Megan waved to her as she stepped out of the terminal. Jen smiled. She was home for the weekend and she'd be seeing Alex soon.

"I can't believe I'm getting into a minivan," Jen teased. "You're turning into your mother."

"Oh, please don't say that. I will never be like my mother." Megan groaned.

"Did she really choose Peter over you?" She still felt like there was a black hole. She missed so much by staying away for years.

"She had her reasons, but it hurt. We're in a better place now."

"She was worse than your Dad and Drew." Jen remembered when Megan's brother fought with his father over not being a lawyer. Thinking back, she said, "Your mother never liked divorced women, I hope she doesn't start hating me."

Megan laughed. "No way! So how was your week? Any famous clients?"

"A Rangers player, but don't tell Alex." Jen laughed.

"How was it working with your ex?"

"Alright."

Jen wanted to mention that it was still uncomfortable seeing Sterling and Trevor together, but she had been keeping secrets from Megan. She knew Megan had her own secrets. Her secret was weighing her down and a barrier to their friendship. There was a time when they knew everything about each other.

Megan started talking about Sophie and Alex's conversation when he arrived at her house earlier for the poker game. Jen laughed and felt her chest ache. She loved him so much.

Crossing the causeway, Jen said, "The feeling of excitement hasn't waned."

"You were the girl who said you hated this sandbar."

"Never hated. I wanted to get away from it, but I always thought I'd visit. I never wanted to stay away for so long."

The minute they walked into Megan's house, Alex was out of his seat grabbing her. She clung to him just taking in his warmth and smell.

"Come on, we're waiting, lover boy," John yelled.

Alex whispered, "Later, I want to..."

Jen giggled and pulled away blushing. She knew what he wanted, and she hoped the game wouldn't last too long.

Once in Megan's master suite each with a glass of wine, Megan said, "I love that you're so happy. Strange, but being cheated on was the best thing for you."

Jen definitely agreed as odd as it sounded. She could hardly envision her life with Sterling anymore. She had found herself, and then she found love.

Taking a breath, she asked, "Did Peter tell you about Sterling?"

"I told you, he only said that he didn't like him."

"So not the secret that I told him last May?"

Megan shook her head. "I told you before Pete only told me you talked. He keeps secrets..."

Jen heard Megan's voice trailed off as if she was referring to her own secrets.

Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, she explained. "The first time I came back was really because of Sterling. Having the Thompson job gave me a reason to stay. I came home because I walked in on Sterling with his lover." Megan didn't respond. She may have known most of this. "The thing that made it worse was because his lover is my assistant, Trevor. Apparently I married a gay man."

"Oh, sweetie!" Megan took her hand and squeezed it. "No wonder you were certain it was over. I was afraid you'd be rash and end your marriage out of anger and jealousy."

"Is that what you did?" Jen dared to ask.

"Yes, I was in a bad place between exhaustion and low self confidence. Having the twins was hard. I didn't trust him when I should have. It just kept getting worse, because he was my best friend who could always calm me. So instead of calming down, I went into destruction mode."

"Did he? No, he'd never..." Jen couldn't even imagine Peter cheating on Megan.

"No, but I thought he did for a long time, because I was stupid and fell for dirty tricks." Jen looked confused, and Megan clarified with one word. "Harmony." Then she told her the abridged version of that snowy night and the days that followed.

"Oh shit, Megan. She's a vile bitch!"

"I know. Listen, don't tell anyone. You understand, because you were with us at the beginning with all the stuff she pulled in high school. You knew the bitch."

"But why did it take so long to reconcile after you got back together?" Jen had asked this question before, but Megan hadn't answered.

Megan sighed, "Once we talked it out and apologized, we were together. Pete moved back within a few weeks."

"But I thought he moved in after Abbie was born."

"Yeah, he did. Okay." Megan let out a big sigh. "Some people know the truth. Even Alex, so I guess Peter won't mind. Jen, Abbie is not his child by blood. She's his because he chose her."

"So you dated someone else?"

She didn't know why it surprised her since Megan had been divorced for a long time.

"Yeah, there was someone else. We do not know if she'll ever learn the truth, but Peter couldn't love her more."

Jen's mouth was hanging open. Finally she closed her jaw enough to speak. "What about the real father?"

"He was here for the summer and has no clue I was ever pregnant which was the way I wanted it even if I was still single. He never wanted to settle down and didn't want children. I was tired of sharing the twins with Peter, I wasn't sharing my baby with a guy who didn't want her."

"So you had a summer fling! Oh my God Megan! I wish I had been in touch with you. I wish I had been a friend to you."

Jen was in The Hampton's starting to find herself while Megan was having sex with a guy other than Peter.

"We're friends again now and we don't have any more secrets. Do we?"

Jen smiled. "Nope, but never ask me about Alex in the bedroom again!"

"That was Kristi. Not me!"

Jen just smiled. She was glad she had her first best friend back.

"Speaking of the bedroom. Let's go see if we can break up that game."

Jen just laughed because it sounded like a good idea to her.

Once downstairs she stood behind Alex much like Megan had with Peter that first poker game she attended.

John said, "She's just like that other one."

Peter spoke up. "Bring Becka next time, unless she enjoys her break from you too much."

John said, "I remember when you were heartbroken and far less cocky."

"John, you're as whipped as the rest of us," Peter retorted.

Alex said, "Peter, if your sister is anything like mine you better be careful or you'll have hell to pay if you go after her husband."

"Boys tone down the testosterone. You're acting like seventeen years olds and believe me I know!" Megan chastised.

Jen laughed and whispered in Alex's ear. "When can we leave?"

Alex didn't answer, but said, "Call!"

Jen watched as they revealed their hands and Alex scooped up the chips. "I think I'll quit while I'm ahead."

There was grumbling, but everyone got ready to leave. There was a lot of talking at once, but Jen moved towards Peter and hugged him.

She whispered. "I told her the truth about Sterling. Thanks for keeping my secret."

"It wasn't my story to tell."

One the drive to Alex's house, Jen said, "I told Megan about Trevor."

"I'm glad."

"She told me about Abbie. Did you know the guy?"

"No, I just knew it was the bartender. I knew when Peter found out. I really felt for him. It took me a long time to get over Cara, but it was nothing like being in love with your ex-wife. I'm happy they worked it out."

"I'm happy we did too."

"Me too." He squeezed her hand.

It shocked Megan to hear about Jen's husband. She tried to remember Jen's state when she arrived last March, but she just remembered her happy to be home. Maybe it was Megan that was so happy she was home. It seemed so stupid that they waited so long to have this conversation. They had been best friends forever. That they lost touch was probably more Megan's fault than Jen's. Peter kept in touch with her. Jen wished she was around that summer when Megan was with Evan. Megan wished she was around that day she kicked Peter out. What if Jen had been there when her mother abandoned her? Would things have been different if she had her best friend? Maybe it wouldn't have, because she never listened to Karen, but Jen knew the bitch. She wouldn't have felt so lonely and isolated that's for sure.

For the billionth time, Megan was just so glad she and Pete found their way back to each other and Jen found Alex. She felt selfish because soon Jen would move home for good. Alex was a gem especially for dealing with Jen being gone all week. Jen had said he never pressured her to quit and come home, but was allowing her to decide when the time was right.

Megan hoped that it would be sooner than later, but maybe what Jen needed was a ring on her finger. Was she rushing them? She just wanted her best friend to be as happy as she was.

When all their friends left, Pete said, "I'm glad you two talked."

"Did you have any idea about him?"

Peter sighed and looked serious. "Yeah, it crossed my mind, but the way he was controlling her overshadowed it. I wanted to save her, but she needed to figure it out on her own. She... and you are a lot alike. I just didn't think it would take both of you years to come to your senses. I lied to her and would like to keep on lying for her sake. Maybe it's to clear my conscience, because back in New York, I didn't want to be the one to say do you think your husband might bat from both sides?"

Megan embraced Peter. "I'm sorry it took years."

"No apologies. I'm just glad we're all where we are today and Jen being with Alex seems to be exactly where she should be."
