《Even Better Together》chapter twenty three

I didn't know what I should do when I got that message from Hunter, the girls said I should see him, just for an explanation and some sort of closure, so then I can move on.
But here I am with Hunter, I can't help that my heart races everytime I'm with him. I'm definitely in love with this man, and it's going to be so hard trying to move on from him.
"Just give me a minute and you'll see." Hunter tells me.
We've come to his club, Hunter says once I see for myself I can trust him, I don't know what that means right now but I don't have much hope.
"Sit here." He tells me, pulling a chair towards me. We are in a small room, filled with filing cabinets and a few screens. Hunter is fiddling with something in front of me and until he steps to the side of me I can eventually see what it is.
"You can watch everything for yourself Soph, this is the day she first came into my office." I look up to the screen and there's cctv footage playing from Hunter's office.
I can see Hunter's reaction isn't pleasant when he is talking to her, there's no sound unfortunately, but I can tell just by his posture he isn't happy.
Once that day has played out, he leans over me, flicking forward to the week he was distant and I've been alone in his penthouse, while he told me he has been working. I stare at the screen as the hours and days of footage plays infront of me.
He was telling the truth.
He has genuinely been in his office on calls, and typing away, Jack also appears a few times too. I gulp, my eyes never leaving the screen.
"And here's the last one." I hear Hunter tell me. I know what this is going to be. I clasp my hands together in my lap to brace myself. I watch the screen as Hunter sits at his desk on a phone call, he is back and forth between his laptop and some papers infront of him when Lucy walks in, her top already off. She gets to him immediately and goes straight in for a kiss, I can't tell if she speaks or not, but then I see myself appear in the room.
I watch myself leave the room as Hunter pushes Lucy away from him, pointing at her angrily, you can tell he is shouting at her. Jack appears, saying something to Hunter, which makes him leave the room.
The screen shuts off as Hunter stands infront of me. I blink, trying to process everything I have just seen.
Was it me in the wrong?
I called him a liar and a cheat but he has clearly proven to me that he was working the entire time, and that he was honest about Lucy that night.
"Baby, please say something?"
"I- uh-"
I can't talk, I don't know what to say. I moved all of my things out of his penthouse before I let him talk to me and explain things. I don't know if I'm ready to do this, to be in a relationship. I can't seem to get anything right, we need to communicate more and I don't know if that is something that should just happen if your with the right person, or is it something that you both work to make happen.
"Soph? Talk to me, this shows you I was being honest right?" His voice soft, as his eyes are searching mine.

"Please can you take me home?"
Hunter smiles, "Yes of course baby, let's go home."
Shit, I didn't mean that, I didn't mean his penthouse. I meant Ivy's, where I've been staying.
"No-" I take deep breathe, "Can you take me to Ivy's please?" I bring my gaze up to Hunter and he looks devastated.
"Wait, you don't believe me? I thought-" Hunter furrows his brows in confusion. I know he thought the cctv would prove his innocence, which it did to some degree, it's more about us and not what did or didn't happen.
"I thought this would show you I was working, I wasn't lying and I didn't cheat on you." I can tell he is confused, his hands are running through his hair, eyes wide.
"Thank you for bringing me here and showing me that, but I think we have to work on ourselves before we have a relationship. We need to communicate more and actually trust each other, if we don't have that then we will never work out." I say, looking directly in his eyes, making sure he knows I'm serious.
"So, your ending us?" He gulps, shoving his hands into his pockets.
"I just don't think us being together is the best thing right now. I appreciate you showing me this, and now I know the truth which is what I wanted-"
"You just don't want me." He interrupts.
I look down, this is hard. I feel my eyes getting watery and my palms starting to sweat.
"I love you Hunter but-"
"But I'm not good enough, that's fine. I thought maybe once I showed you proof that I was honest with you, maybe you would see how much I love and respect you, and I would never do anything to hurt you."
"Please Hunter, I just don't think we are good together right now. Maybe a little space is what we need for a while." My tears spilling down my face, I wipe them away with my hand. Hunter looks away from me taking a deep breathe.
"Ok yeah, space."
I turn to walk out of the door but Hunter grabs my arm. I look up to his eyes as his large hands cup my neck. His intense green orbs flicking between my eyes.
"I love you Sophia, we can have space for now, but I know we are meant to be together one day. I know we are. Me and you." His forehead rests on mine, my eyes closing softly as more tears escape.
"Me and you." I whisper, knowing this is our goodbye.
3 months later ...
It's been difficult to not be around Hunter all the time at first, I was of course upset, like our relationship was over for good, but after the first few weeks my mindset kind of changed.
I realised that if I want a relationship in the future I have to be honest with myself and know what I want and how to go about things. I did lots of reading online about how to be open and communicate and I even went back to the spa resort that Hunter had taken me to, so I could spend time working on myself and how to make my soul happy before I share my life with anyone else.
It's now January, and what better way to start the new year off with a new mindset and attitiude on life. I'm still just working at the coffee shop, no other opportunities have come my way yet, but I'm taking it as a good thing. Everything happens for a reason. A mantra that I have been telling myself, that one day I will have everything I ever dreamed of.

I've been living in a small 1 bed apartment, just outside of the city, it's not where I want to be but it's good for now.
I'm just on my way for a shift now, I have to get an Uber from my place, which only takes 10 minutes luckily.
My mind drifts back to Hunter like usual, we have shared a few texts over the last few months, wishing each other a merry christmas and happy new year, he asked if I found a place to live and I asked him how work was, keeping the conversation just friendly I guess.
I do miss him, I always wonder if I did the right thing, but it's what felt right to me in that moment.
Reaching the coffee shop I go to pull the door as someone walks through it, making me stumble back.
"Sorry-"
My heart stops. I can't believe this is happening again. His green eyes staring into my soul, his touch on my arm lighting a fire in my stomach.
Hunter.
The man I am absolutely still in love with.
"Hi Sophia." He snaps me out of my thoughts. I honestly thought he stopped coming to Aroma because of me, I know it was his local before we met and I was waiting for the day that maybe I would see him again.
"Hunter, hey." I breath out, tucking a stray hair behind my ear.
"You cut your hair, you look beautiful." He says, a blush creeping onto my cheeks. My long brunette hair has indeed gone, I decided I needed a change and took the plunge to have it chopped, so now it just skims my shoulders, and has a few layers in the front.
"Thank you. I better go, my shift starts soon." I tell him, glancing at the time on my phone screen.
"Yeah, of course-"
"Hey, thanks for not waiting!" A blonde woman approaches Hunter and puts her arm through his. I smile and turn to walk inside when Hunter steps infront of me.
"It was great seeing you Soph, this is my friend Adam's fiancée, you remember him?" Hunter rushes out.
"Oh yeah, of course. Well I gotta go, have a great day." I smile and head inside, the butterflies dancing in my stomach as I make my way through the crowds.
〰️〰️〰️
"So do you think he's still interested in me?" I ask the girls over facetime.
Cassie is still in Spain, me and Ivy always call her when we can and she comes back to London at least one weekend a month. This weekend she is coming home and she wants to go out for drinks, which is something I haven't done in a very long time, but I'm looking forward to it.
"Of course! Why else would he have felt to need to let you know that his friend's fiancée was with him!" Cassie shouts.
"I agree, I think it's kinda fate you both bumping into each other, after all this time, in the first place you guys really met." Ivy says.
"I think we should go to his club this weekend and see with our own eyes how he reacts to you there." Cassie winks, giggling at us.
"Yes!"
"No, guys, I told you, we can go out but not to Hunter's bar or club." I was very clear on that, which is why I haven't stepped foot in there since that day he showed me the cctv footage.
"You still love him Soph, and I think from today's reaction from him, he loves you too. Let's go to the club, have some drinks, dance for a bit, maybe even flirt with some guys and if he still loves you, he will fight for you." Cassie lays it out for us. Ivy nodding her head in agreement.
I sigh, "Fine, but no flirting." I point at them laughing.
〰️〰️〰️
I have spent all day preparing for tonight, I did an extra long yoga session this morning, followed by a breathing exercise. Cooked a healthy lunch for myself, then showered and shaved everywhere! I washed my hair, applied my skincare and favourite body oil. I feel fantastic!
I have styled my short hair in loose curls, applied some lipgloss and mascara, and now I'm on to picking my outfit.
I go with a white crop top with chain straps and white mini skirt co ord set, paired with baby blue strappy heels and matching bag. I spritz my body in my favourite perfume, before heading out to my friends in the Uber waiting outside.
"Soph you look so hot!" Cassie screams at me as I climb in the back seat.
"Thanks, you guys do too."
Cassie is in black leather pants with a red glittery crop top, her hair curly and wild. While Ivy sticks to wearing her signature baby pink, a cute little blazer with matching shorts and pink shoes to complete the look.
"This is going to be a good night ladies, I can feel it." Ivy says, squeezing my hand, all of us smiling with excitement.
I feel nervous entering the club, it's Saturday night so Hunter will more than likely be here somewhere. I hear the music that is playing, Daddy Yankee's Con Calma, my hips swaying to the beat already. It reminds me of all the times I've danced with Hunter and even when we were in his kitchen together- I shake my head, I can't think about that now. Whatever happens, happens and I will be ok with it.
"Hey Sophia! It's been a while!" I hear a guy's voice behind me. Turning around I see Sam infront of me, one of the personal trainers from the sports centre.
"Oh hey Sam, how are you?" I ask, as he pulls me in for a hug.
"I'm good, you look great by the way! We miss you at the centre."
"Aw, I miss it too. Oh by the way these are my friends, Ivy and Cassie." I introduce them, as I see Cassie biting her lip at Sam, he is definitely her type, I think to myself.
"I'll go get us some drinks!" I shout to the girls.
"Let me help you." Sam tells me as I nod.
"Pornstar martini please!"
"Make that two!"
I laugh at Cassie and Ivy dancing as I make my way to the bar with Sam.
"Your friend seems cool, Cassie? Is she single?" Sam asks directly in my ear, his hand on my lower back.
I laugh to myself, they are definitely getting together tonight.
"Yeah she is." I smile at him.
I see Jack heading over to us and I gulp, knowing that now he has seen me, Hunter will know I'm here.
"Hey Sophia, what can I get you?"
"Hey Jack, can I have 2 Pornstar Martini's-"
I point to Sam, "A beer please."
"And a Vod-"
"Vodka cranberry with ice."
I turn to the side of me as I hear Hunter finish my drinks order.
Shit.
