《The Golden Girl》47. Bad at love

Sparks, butterflies, they aren't the things that makes love. Jealousy, holding hands, kissing are not the things that makes love. Just wanting to strip her when she wears a pretty dress, isn't love.

When she reveals her secrets more than she reveals her body, tells you about her parents, those little things like how she despite showering, shares every moment with you, just know, that, yes that, is love. And when you love her with all her flaws, want to know everything about her, about the little things that she never told anyone, cherish every second of her presence, love her humorous attitude more than her body. Boy, that is love.

PS: Never let go off that girl.

She watched as he went through her novels, his brows creased together and a concentrated look on his face.

"You are useless." Faye threw a pillow on him, making him groan.

"Oi, what did I do?" He stared at her with an annoyed look.

"I just asked you to look after Zach and here you are, bugging me."

"He is not a baby, he can look after himself. At least, that's what he said. And then, when I banged on his door and demanded answers, he told me to fuck off." River answered with a pout.

He looked so adorable that Faye could not stop her from breaking into a small smile. How can he look so cute and hot at the same time? That was not humanly possible!

Then again, its River Blake we are talking about.

She shook her head before walking up to her desk and starting to fumble with her pens.

"I just know that Madeline slapped him." River added with a shrug.

"She did what?" Faye asked, surprised.

"Some of the seniors saw them furiously talking to each other. That is, Madeline shouting and Zach trying to talk in his calm composer. Then, just as he was explainig her something, she slapped him."

"Woah. Did not know about that. I wonder if they are alright now. Knowing Madeline, she would be crying herself to sleep. God, I think we should go to her. Yah, yah we should. We need to be there for her, I do not have any idea what she is going through. Okay, River you are coming with me–" And just as she turned around, Faye came face to face with him.

He was too close to her, she realised. So close that it was getting hard for her to breath. Her grip on the table became tighter and she felt her legs turn into jelly.

His smell was so addictive, fresh.

That is when she realised that he was coming close to her, if its even possible.

"Faye?" He whispered, brushing his lips against her cheek, inhaling deeply.

She realised how he had his eyes closed, hands on either side of the desk.

She let out a shaky breath, her eyes tracing every feature of his face.

Was that it? Was she finally going to kiss River Blake?

Her hand found its way to his cheeks and she traced her thumb through the skin, her eyes closed.

They were finally going to kiss.

And Faye found herself getting closer to him. Slowly, steadily, she placed one of her hands on his cheeks and found him wrapping his arms around her waist.

"I–" He was just about to say something when the door barged open.

"What the fuck?!" River and Faye shouted in unison, jumping away from each other.

And there stood Veronica, her eyes wide open and mouth ajar.

"I am so sorry, I did not mean to interrupt. You both continue what you were doing, I will just come again later. Yah, yah I will come again later." Faye's mom started to babble, making Faye and River, both embarrass.

"Mom, its okay. Its not like we were doing anything." Faye did not meet her in the eye.

"Riiight." Veronica did not believe.

"Ah, do you need my help?" She fidgeted with her fingers.

"Ah its not me. Madeline is here. And well, she looks like someone who had not have a shower for years." Her mom replied.

"You can just say that she looks like shit." Faye shrugged.

"Now, that will be really inappropriate to say. Anyways, I am sending her here." And just as Veronica was about to go, River stepped in.

"Have a good day Veronica." He grinned.

"You too honey and next time you decide to have sex, please do not forget to use protection."

"And then he said that he really likes Isabella. That all the shit that he is feeling is something that he never felt. I could not help it. How can he say that to me? How can he say that to someone who loves him so much? He's a dumbass I tell you." Saying that, she shoved a spoonful of ice cream inside her mouth.

Madeline looked crappy.

Her mascara was smudged and tears were continuously falling from her eyes. Her hair, let's just say it looked like a nest.

"Hey Mads, he doesn't deserve it." River patted her back, nodding his head.

Faye looked at him with an arched eyebrow before getting into the loveseat with Madeline and him.

"I know he's my brother but that does not mean that he is not a douchebag. He could have been more gentle and nice to her." River shrugged.

"That's the thing, he's too nice, too nice. He asked me to fucking forgive him, he wanted me to forgive him for not loving me, how stupid is that? Fucking bastard." And then she looked at the television before screaming, "He's gonna leave you bitch. They all leaves you at the end." She threw a handful of popcorn towards the screen, sobbing.

"What's wrong with me? Why Isabella? What does she have that I do not? What's fucking wrong with me?" Madeline turned towards River, her head rested on Faye's shoulder.

"Nothing is wrong with you Madeline, its just, love, that thing, just happens, you cannot stop yourself from falling in love with someone Mads." River squeezed her shoulder, comforting her.

"Do you think if I start studying more, maybe cut my hair a little, and join the council, Zach will take a liking for me?" She looked at Faye with hope.

"Oh Maddy, I know its hard but you need to move on, yah? And I promise it gets better with time. And are you really gonna lose yourself just to make someone like you?" And Madeline frowned.

"You will find someone better, you know. Someone that will understand you better, love you for what you are. That's not Zach and you do know that." River ruffled her hair, shooting a smile.

"I know. I get it." And she looked at both of them before continuing, "I am glad that I, at least told him about it. Like that, maybe, somewhere I now know that I could not get him. Somewhere, am not gonna struggle with myself saying that I did not try."

And River's mouth went dry. His eyes turned towards Faye and he wondered if it was time. Time to say those untold words.

He did not want to lose her after all.
