《A Tale of an Amalgam》Chapter 8: His Idiotic Tendencies

After that 'meeting', I proceeded to read with the guide of the librarian whose name is Ayame-san. I already know how to read so I had no problems understanding the strange knowledge poured into my brain. I read about the history of Daemonorops, the deceased and current royal family members, magic, literature, etc. I didn't even notice the time due to my immersion in reading.

"Seraphine-hime, there you are!"

"Imogen-san!" I exclaimed and pounced on her.

"Please mind your manners, Seraphine-hime, a princess shouldn't jump around like that." I gave her a pout that she gave in. "I forgive you for now, but don't expect me to let it go. I will ask for an etiquette teacher for you if you did!"

"Imogen. Kind." I complimented her that she blushed. "Imogen. Pretty." I added, and it fueled to her embarrassment.

Tee~hee~, maids like her are too easy.

"Aww, thanks himesama!" She rubbed her cheeks against mine. "Seraphine-hime really is the cutest!!" I sweatdropped.

Now I'm fed up with their non-changing compliments. Can't they change it to adorable? Or irresistable?

She half-bathed and put a bright pink frilly lolita dress on and lead me to the dinner hall. She stood near the door like a knight does and watched me. When I took my seat, I saw a depressed old man with disheveled clothes.

"Ojisama?" I asked after a moment's silence.

"Ah yes, I'm okay. We should eat now."

Multiple butlers arrived with different kinds of foods ranging from appetizers to desserts, from meats to fruits and vegetables. I just munched on my food when he stared at me, probably implying that I forgot to say or do something.

"..." I tilted my head to the side.

*hah

What's with the sigh? What did I do wrong? I didn't do anything wrong, did I?

Then why is he acting like an abandoned puppy on the roadside?

"... ojisama?" I asked, confused by his actions.

"Is there something you wish to say, Sese-chan?" He gave me the look. "I think you forgot something, hm?"

Now I'm more confused!! What is he implying?

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, I remember now!! I fell asleep in the library! And I forgot to have teatime with him!!

"Sorry." I muttered under my breath.

"I can't hear you~"

"I'm sorry..! Sese. Time. Forgot." I persisted with a monotone voice and showed my puppy eyes to him unconsciously. "Forget. Never." I added.

*chuckle

I widened my eyes at his reaction.

He was just depressed moments ago, what's with the sudden change of mood?! Is he perhaps... bipolar? He doesn't have split personalities, right?

"Sorry Sese-chan, I was just messing with ya! But I was kinda sad when you stood me up. It seems you had fun so I'll let it be. Make sure not to do it again, a'ight?" I nodded my head vigorously. "That's my granddaughter."

Unknown POV

I am His Majesty's personal aide, Shindo Coleophysis. For 500 years that I've served him, this must be the third time that I saw him genuinely happy. First was when he fell in love with the human princess and second was when he became a father of Philippe-ouji.

His Majesty left all his paperwork to me when Ryuuji-dono arrived with his granddaughter, Seraphine-hime. He was ecstatic, he even forced all the maidservants to quickly prepare her room. I just sighed and helped from the sidelines, I was curious of the princess after all.

When Seraphine-hime didn't arrive at the specified time and place where they agreed to have teatime, His Majesty was about to burst into tears.

"Boo-hoo, my granddaughter hates me!! Tell me Shindo-san, am I really that despicable? I was just desperate to take care of her! Just why?" He whined that I couldn't help but laugh at his actions.

*sniffle sniffle

I can't believe the great King of the Dragons, who slaughtered many without any regard of their race, could act this pathetic! If I told anybody about this, they'd accuse me of lése majesté.

But this side of His Majesty can only be seen if it's about his family, which is Her Highness.

"Your Majesty, maybe she was just too immersed in reading that she forgot the time..?"

"That can't be!! A cute and smart girl like her, impossible!!"

I think you're getting too melodramatic Your Majesty, are you still that ruthless villainous dragon king who ruled over us?

"Maybe I should just trust her, you're right. I'll just ask her over lunch, that's right!" He murmured while trying to cheer himself up. "I can't thank you enough Shindo-san, tell me anytime if you need anything. I'll make sure to fulfill it if it's within my capabilities." He took a bite from a cookie and drank some tea.

*at lunch

His Majesty busied himself by preparing the foods himself with the help of the palace chef and some of the butlers. He also arranged the eating utensils on the table and nodded to himself when he thought that everything's perfect.

"Will this suffice, Shindo-san? I think it's a little ordinary for her bright eyes..." I silently sighed at his words.

"Your Majesty, I assure you that she'll like what you prepared for her."

"But what if she won't? Will she hate me even more?"

This king is starting to irritate me, does he think I know what his granddaughter's thinking? It's obvious I don't!!

"I'm just asking, there's no need for you to answer if you don't want to. You have grandchildren, so I thought I should consult you." He whimpered.

Seriously, are you really the king?! Author-sama, what did you do to His Majesty's character?!

(A/N: Hey, stop breaking the fourth wall!! You can do anything but that!!)

"Your Majesty, she'll like it! I swear on my life!!" I swore to boost his confidence and I succeeded. He puffed out his chest and wore a proud smile.

"You're right, I am the King of Dragons after all. I'm the best grandfather she could ever have!" He laughed in a weird manner that sent shivers to my spine.

To no avail, Seraphine-hime didn't arrive.

"What a liar you are Shindo-san, can I perhaps behead you?"

"Eek!! Your Majesty, this lowly one wants to apologize!!" I kowtowed on the ground. "You can punish me as you see fit, but please don't kill me!!"

"Yes, yes, Seraphine would despise me if I did. Instead, I'll leave all my official matters to you."

A panting maid arrived that cut off our conversation.

Wait, isn't that Imogen-san, Seraphine-hime's personal maid?!

"Your Majesty, this humble maid greets you. Seraphine-hime was busy reading a hundred books and is now asleep. Should I wake her up, Your Majesty?"

"No, let her be." He replied as he shook his head. "I bet she looks cuter when she's asleep..!" He murmured that I shuddered.

A certified granddaughtercon, I just hope Seraphine-hime would put up with his newfound personality!

"I apologize, I'm gonna sign some documents now. Inform me an hour before dinner to eat. Excuse me~" He suddenly said in a good mood and left.

Imogen-san and I lookes at each other in bafflement.

"Was His Majesty always like that?"

"Yes, but this time it's worse. Let's just hope the princess can cope up with it." We nodded to each other in determination and went to our own separate ways.

Arcana-joō, what would we servants do when Nehemiah-ou acts like that? Should we let him be, Your Majesty?

"... he's also a person, but with heavier responsibilities than normal people. We should just let him have his fun while he still has the time, or he'd go berserk..."

Only you, Your Majesty, can calm him down at times like these... I wish you could come back to us...
