《The Software Detective》2.11 Face Down, Knife Up

Kalina pulled her car up to the front of the house. The crime happened in a neighborhood in the suburbs. It was in a nice area with a lot of large homes. I could only assume each of them was at least $500k.

Stepping out of the car, we walked over to the front of the door. Its front door was closed and there was yellow crime seat tape going from one side of the door frame to the other. We ducked into the entrance and then walked into the foyer. From where we stood, the home looked as if it were just cleaned. There didn’t seem to be anything broken or a sign of trouble. I looked back at the front door. There was no sign of forced entry.

There was a faint sniffling. It was low enough that I missed it when I walked into the house. But now I can hear it clear as day. Looking, turning toward the soft whimper, there was a woman sitting on the couch, face buried in the chest of a man in a suit. His suit had boogers and was damp from the crying women on the couch. I wonder if she will pay for his dry cleaning.

Kalina was squatting next to the dead body. His head was turned to the side, covered in an expression of shock and horror. Rightfully so because he had a large chef’s knife protruding from his back. The man’s blood soaked his shirt and made a puddle around his cadaver.

I clicked the button on the side of my glasses and documented the crime scene. Near the body there was a chair laying down as if it had fallen down. What was even more odd it would seem that it was taken from the dining room table as the other identical chairs remained in their place around the table.

An arrow blinked on the left lens. The notification led me to a damp part of the carpet. In the center of the damp part was a dent in the carpet. That’s when I felt something damp come across my forehead. Wiping it I realized that the heat was on even though it was the beginning of summer.

“You must be Mrs. Bach. I’m Detective Rose and this is Detective Morningstar. We will be investigating the murder of your husband Ronald”

The woman lifted her head, sniffling. “Thank you, I really appreciated. You can just call me Aniyah.” Aniyah said, or at least that’s what I understood throughout her sobbing.

“Hi detectives, I am Derenik. I live across the street; I live across the street from Aniyah and Ronald. When Aniyah came home to her husband like this she ran over to ask for my help. She thought the murderer was still on the premise but luckily there was no one here when I checked out the place.” Derenik said.

I might have just been seeing things, but I could have sworn that Kalina’s eyes narrowed while Derenik spoke.

“Me and Detective Morningstar are going to look around, then we will have a few questions for you.” Kalina said.

They both nodded, and we both disbursed to opposite directions. She went upstairs, and I remained downstairs.

As I walked around crime scene techs scanning for fingerprints and taking photos. I looked for any signs of robbery or forced entry. When I was done looking around the downstairs, I went upstairs to see Kalina. There were no crime scene technicians up here, and before I could look at the other rooms, I saw Kalina walking out of the master bedroom.

“Find anything Tommy boy?” Kalina said.

“No, there was nothing, it is clear that Ronald was murdered, but I don’t know how. Did you find anything?” I said.

“Of course, I have already solved the case. Let’s see if you can solve it by the time we are finished questioning the suspects.” Kalina winked at me.

“There’s no way you solved it already. We just got here.” I scoffed. There’s no way she solved it that fast. She hasn’t even heard the suspects’ alibis.

“Want to make a bet?” Kalina’s eyes went wild, as if she knew she would win the bet.

“Sure, why not? Loser buys the other person's lunch tomorrow.” I said, sticking my hand out to seal the deal.

“Your own rookie.” Kalina said, shaking my hand. With our wager set, we went downstairs.
