“So she passed out?”
Luke was home again, talking to Hajime after (Y/N) was fast asleep in her room, their siblings playing downstairs and making a mess as per usual.
“Yes. Does this happen often?” Hajime asked, looking clearly concerned about the amount of noise that Luke’s siblings creating downstairs. What were they doing? Rasing the dead down there?
“More often recently. She’s gotten sick before but it was never as bad as this back then… I’m worried about her. Have her friends said anything about us not being at school?”
Hajime nodded and gently pat his head. “Yeah. They all seem bored without you both. Amazingly, they don't want to do anything unless you guys are at school with them… I guess (L/N)s really are the life of the party huh?”
“It’s a gift teach~ Now why are you touching me?”
Hajime’s face flushed a bit and he tried to move his hand away but Luke pulled it back and chuckled. “I’m teasing~ It was… nice…”
What was happening here?
Luke stands up to lead Hajime to the kitchen to start making soup for his family and (Y/N). “Care to help me out teach?”
“Sure, I have time.”
“You’re pretty cool tea- OI! QUIT STACKING THE CANS INTO A TOWER LITTLE MORONS-”
Hajime just laughed and helped Luke shoo his siblings into the living room before they started cooking together.
She feels like she’s sinking into inky black darkness.
No that’s not right… She feels like she’s being pulled down into the ink by a million hands. She feels like she cant breathe… Can’t think… Can’t-
(Y/N). Wake up.
She sits up with a gasp, beads of sweat rolling down her face for a second before she knows that she’s safe at home in her bed.

“What the hell? Teach??”
Kamukura was looking down at her with his red irises, a blank expression on his face. He knew she was having a nightmare and he was secretly glad he could break her out of it.
“You were having a nightmare.”
“Yeah thanks for stating the obvious… What is that smell?”
“Soup. Your brother and Hinata are making food for you downstairs.”
“It’s still weird that you two are staying here with us.”
Izuru didn’t say anything as he wet a cloth and gently pressed it to her head to help cool her down a bit.
“Oh by the way teach, I finished that History work you wanted.”
This took him by surprise. (Y/N) never did History work. She absolutely despised History… But as he looked at the desk he saw a stack of papers sitting neatly next to a lamp, all of the work done perfectly in fancy handwriting.
“...You have good penmanship.”
“Thanks.”
Awkward silence.
“Teach… Why do you insist on helping us out? We would be just fine on our own.”
“Do you really believe that?”
(Y/N) looked down at her bedsheets with a sigh. To be honest, she really doesnt believe it. Up until now Luke and her have had to do everything on their own and they have been struggling. If it wasn't for the Talent Scout taking (Y/N) in as the Ultimate (Talent), her family would most likely be on the street right now… or worse.
All this time she made a show of looking strong and tough, but it was taking a huge toll on her as one could clearly see. She silently looks up again and shakes her head.
“As I thought. You’re in no state to be doing all of this on your own. You’re still in school and you’re the oldest with only your brother to support you. It’s admirable that you’ve made it this far, but you both shouldn't be doing all of this at such young ages.”

Was he being genuine? She couldn't tell as she stared a bit in shock before shaking her head. Bad idea. Her head started to hurt instantly and she had to lie back again with a groan.
“I feel like shit teach…”
“I know.”
I’m scared teach… She almost said, but she kept her mouth shut.
“Well… What’s next for make up, teach?”
Izuru put his fake glasses back on and flips through papers in his bag. “Math.”
She gave a loud and aggressive sigh.
“Alright… Do you mind if we… go over it for a bit?”
“In your current state?”
She nodded. “It’ll… Help me take my mind off of all of this.”
Izuru nodded and went over the current classwork with her as much as he could without stressing her out too much. Lucas and Hajime were watching from the end of the hall with smiles on their faces, thinking they looked cute working together…
…Until (Y/N) caught them there and hid under her covers since she couldn't yell at them to leave.

Flashback: Siren Song
The year is 1969. Yancy Lazarus—bluesman, gambler, future world-class mage and fix-it man—is just a dumb, unlucky kid serving with the 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines in Vietnam. With just a few weeks left to go until Yancy gets shipped back to the States, he’s just trying to keep his head down and avoid a body bag—no mean feat in Nam. But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves. Just like the mysterious music drifting through the jungle toward Yancy's squad, Siren Song will get under your skin and sink its hooks into your mind. —eden Hudson, Author of Halo Bound (the Redneck Apocalypse series) *** Hey everyone, this is James Hunter. This story isn't a full length novel--its a novella length work (25K words), and is part of my Yancy Lazarus series. Its already free on Amazon, so I thought I'd post chapters here for the good folks of Royal Road.
