《Dorming With The Jocks》Chapter 21- OLD VERSION

Sadie's POV

I knew I shouldn't have skipped class, since all classes were cancelled yesterday, but I really did need a dress for the dance. Plus, with being a little hungover, I couldn't concentrate today.

The last bit of guilt I still had for skipping class vanished as soon as we pulled up to the store Holly insisted we go to get dresses. Jackie, Josie and I crawled out of the back seat of Kailey's car and the five of us headed in. The store strictly sold formal event gowns, heels, jewelry and suits, along with matching ties, bows ties, cuff links and vests. I had a feeling this place was going to be expensive.

The girls and I had all discussed the power outage on the car ride over. The girls had been jealous that the boys were so prepared, all they had were a few bottles of wine and some wine coolers. For the most part the girls had worked on rearranging their dorm rooms, gossiping and spending too much time on their phones before they died.

"The red dresses are over here," Jackie grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the endless row of red dresses, ranging from floor length to just covering your goodies, glitter, silk, puffy sleeves, no sleeves, you name it.

After Kent and I had finally agreed to go to the dance together I had to tell Jackie, now she was determined to find me the perfect red dress.

"I swear I told you red was your color the second time we hung out," Jackie continued to mumble, mostly to herself, while we sifted through the dresses.

"Has Squid asked you to the dance yet?" I nudged Jackie with my elbow, keeping my eyes on the dresses. I watched Jackie's head snap towards me and I could see her wide eyes out of the corner of mine.

"He. . . he did, yeah," She quietly muttered. Now it was my turn to be surprised. I had been telling Squid to ask Jackie to the dance for months it felt like.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I was too excited for her to be upset about not telling me. Jackie reserved about this stuff more than anyone else I had met before.

"Because it just happened last night," Jackie's cheeks flushed with color and one of her hands covered her mouth to hide a giggle.

"Tell me it wasn't something stupid," Jackie shook her head.

"He tried to throw pebbles at my window but accidentally ended up cracking the window," Now both Jackie and I were giggling, no longer paying attention to the dresses. "But the funniest thing was, he was throwing the rock at the wrong window. He was just one window off,"

With our loud laughter the other girls hurried over to where we were to find out what was so funny. Once Jackie told the other, we all were laughing so loud I was afraid we were going to get asked to leave the store.

"Then why aren't you looking for a dress?" I asked, Holly lingered around to look through the red dresses with us too.

"I just don't really know what I would get," Now Jackie's cheeks were red again, but this time because of shame. Holly linked her arm through Jackie's quickly and pulled her close, with a cheesy smile on her face.

"What do you think we're here for?" Before I had time to save Jackie from the ultimate makeover she was about to receive, Holly yanked Jackie towards the navy blue section where Josie was. Those two were going to kill Jackie with pink and glitter. I continued to look through the red dresses until Kailey and I bumped into each other.

"Find anything good?" Kailey asked, looking as defeated as I felt.

"Nothing," The two of us headed to the changing rooms where the other three were and sat down on the cushioned benches.

"Hurry up Jackie," Josie barked, walking towards Kailey and I with a red dress cradled in her arms. "Sades, I found the perfect dress for you, go try it on,"

Josie shoved the dress in my hands and waved me towards one of the changing rooms that was vacant. Arguing with Josie would be pointless, plus I still needed to find a dress. While I stripped and began stepping into the dress Jackie must have come out to show the other girls her dress because they all squealed suddenly, nearly giving me a heart attack. The red dress Josie had picked out for me reached mid thigh, shorter than I'd ever worn before, but it flared out at the waist so it wasn't skin tight on my legs. The A-line top was adorned with beautiful lace and was even a bit see through at the torso. My mother might not approve of this dress but honestly I felt amazing in it.

"Sadie it's your turn," Holly called out just as I finished zipping up the dress. It fit perfectly. I opened the door and smiled at the four girls waiting eagerly to see me. Jackie was in a beautiful navy blue dress that touched the floor and a long slit reached up to her upper thigh. It was daring, something I would never have imagined Jackie wearing, but she pulled it off!

"You look amazing!" Both Jackie and I said to each other at the same time. The other three complimented our dresses, telling us both we HAD to get them for the dance. I had never been to a formal dance like this one before, my nerves were beginning to creep up on me. Within another hour all five of us girls had found our dresses and were cashing out. When it was my turn I nervously slipped out my credit card, my mom's lecture was already starting to play through my thoughts, and handed it to the lady.

I know my parents said my credit card was for emergencies only but my first high school dance kind of counts. . . right? $150 wouldn't be too much to pay back anyway.

I tried not to wrinkle my new dress while I hid it under my coat and rushing up the stairs. Hopefully Kent wasn't back to the dorm yet and I could slip in and out without him seeing the dress. I hadn't thought about that when I refused the bag the lady offered before we left the store. I peeked my head slowly around the corner from the stairwell and saw that no one was in the hallway. Perfect. I tucked the dress tightly against my chest and made a run for my room down the hall. My shoes were louder than I had hoped but I made it to my room without being seen. As I fiddled with my keys to unlock the door, the door behind me opened quickly.

"Oh hey Sadie," It was Charlie, he wasn't wearing a shirt, just his pajama bottoms.

"Hey Charlie, what's up?" I asked, only turning my head to look at Charlie, trying to hide the fact I had my homecoming dress under my coat.

"Look Sadie I've been meaning to ask you for a while but I haven't been able to get you alone," Charlie said, smiling down at me.

"Ask me what Charlie?" Why couldn't I just open the stupid door already? I turned to look back at the lock and finally the door popped open.

"You'll see in a second," Charlie walked past me and into my room and I followed, confused why he was excited and what was waiting for me in my room. I forgot about hiding the dress from Charlie and rounded the corner to where mine and Kent's beds were.

"Wait, what is this?" Charlie wasn't happy or excited anymore, he was angry actually. I glanced over him and saw why. On Kent's bed there was a white teddy bear that was hugging a heart surrounded by rose petals and a ton of glitter. My bed had been messed up from when I made it this morning, rose petals and half burned tealight candles were tangled up in my sheets.

"What's going on?" Kent strolled into the room, his backpack hanging from one shoulder and he smiled down at me before glancing around the room. "Whoa, what's going on?"

"You tell me," Charlie snapped, turning around to face both Kent and I now. His face was flushed and his jaw was locked tight.

"How would I know? I just got here!" Kent threw his backpack over onto his bed not caring one bit about the petals he had messed up. Charlie stood up a little straighter and glared at Kent.

"You messed up Sadie's bed so she won't go to the dance with me," Charlie reached out and shoved Kent's shoulder hard.

"You really don't know what you're talking about," Kent took a step towards Charlie and before I knew it the two were puffing out their chests, ready to swing at one another within a split second.

"I set up the roses and the candles for Sadie to ask her to the homecoming dance and it just so happens her bed gets messed up! What a mystery," Charlie's voice was full of sarcasm while Kent examined my bed and then looked at his own.

"Jokes on you, I already-" Kent was interrupted by loud knocking on the already open door to our room.

"Oh goodie, you're all here," Missy hissed out, swaying into the room with a fake smile.

"What the hell do you want?" I asked, sick of the drama and definitely not wanting Missy anywhere near my room.

"I'm here to get an answer from Kent," Missy rolled her eyes at me, as if I should already know the answer. She then turned to Kent and waved at his bed with the teddy bear and roses.

"Well? Are we going to the dance together or not?"
