《Refining the Heavens》B4, Chapter 17: Rakshasa

The power behind each swing of Kairos’ arms was unmeasurable, and except for light, heat, and sound, there was no energy lost during the attack.
Saint Academy had once judged a student’s control of strength this way.
Though the instructors did not teach them any methods to maximise one’s strength as they likely did not know any ways themselves, Kairos had a previous experience in doing so.
During the Orc siege, he had been influenced by Tommy’s fighting spirit and went into a battle trance.
His every move, every step, and every strike, was soundless.
The only leakage of energy was an eerie soft glow that accompanied his every slash with his Swallow.
He was in a combat revelation stupor at that time, but he did not forget the feeling and studied it for years.
Though Kairos did not manage to recreate the entire process, his destructive strength had increased several folds.
So focused was his power that only what he target was destroyed.
There wasn’t a tremor when he struck, nor great gusts of wind when he rained blows down, but there was a frightening restrain that stole the breath away of all who saw their terrible battle.
As barbarians living in a land filled with monstrous creatures, they are used to brutal encounters. Their terrain is harsh to say the least, and their environment mould them into powerful External Practitioners; it was necessary for their Ki to permeate every fiber in their body, protecting them from the biting everwinter.
It couldn’t be helped that their fights are more physical than the Saint Empire’s practitioners that favours inner Ki, and the Silent Lambs Empire which has the sweltering Sahara desert, where people don’t move if they could.
But, this savagery that Kairos displayed. It was something they never seen before and it chilled them to the bones.
They were absolutely silent as their lord was killed before their eyes, fearing that by breathing too loudly they might break that unnatural restrain that Kairos is showing, and it may kill them all.
There were sound, sparks, and slight movements of air when every blow of the Sixty-four Fiend Slayer Strikes connected, but the strength hidden within the impacts caused the onlookers to pale. To have that much power yet so little disturbance did not make sense.

Their Barbarian Lord looked as like a ragged doll smashed repeatedly by a King Sky Cow instead of a man, much less with the strength of a boy.
The unnatural physical phenomenon caused the grunts to falter. When the first among them broke ranks, the rest followed like receding tides.
A smile appeared on Kairos’ face.
This was the effect that he was aiming for.
Every time a stronger warrior or a commander from the Frosthral arrives, someone from the Snowdrifts will neutralise the threat and cause the enemy to waver.
It gave them a short period of rest and allowed them to continue fighting longer while waiting for their reinforcements.
In the past two days, they have seen twelve War Chiefs, fifty over Chiefs, and three Barbarian Lords.
They could ignore most Barbarian Chiefs now since the majority of them are minor Chiefs with only a hundred or two subordinates.
The Barbarian War Chiefs are more dangerous. Each time they arrive, they bring along ten thousand soldiers with them. Unless the Snowdrifts kill the leader, it is hard to maintain against that many.
The true danger comes when a Barbarian Lords arrive. It means that someone up there in the upper echelons of the Frosthral frontlines could no longer tolerate the Snowdrifts.
Unfortunately, there were only three Lords in their midst and all three had fallen. Two of them by Kairos’ hands, and one from Edward’s unexpected arrow.
Within the Snowdrifts, Kairos is not the strongest but he was the most rounded and had an incredible repertoire of skills.
It wasn’t a surprise that the task of beheading the enemy Lord became a task most suited for him.
Kairos had reached S rank after four years. It is considerably quick on account of his talent. It is already on par the level of the other top ten seniors in Saint Academy when they graduated.
However, in respect to the Origin Cultivation, it is, in fact, rather slow. The Ki refining technique is at least equal to those belonging to the immortal realm and ought to be superior to the methods on Gaia, be it the speed of cultivation or the quality.
Not to forget, he is training in the Crystal Valve that provides seven times the cultivation speed.

Yet, he had only reached S rank.
They restrained their own breakthroughs in favour of strengthening their foundation.
Kairos who could reach Peak S rank is only Entry S right now.
Edward, Alan, Jim could reach Mid Double S, and Tommy who after retraining could reach Peak Double SS, have all kept their cultivation at Peak S rank.
Likewise, Sasha, John, Silvers, and Long with the help of the guardian dragon, Thyrm’s blood, are able to get to Mid SS or Peak SS by now, but they stayed at Peak S rank.
The rest of the Snowdrifts also had varying success in cultivation, however, many of them could not forfeit the allure of a breakthrough. The rush of joy one felt when entering the next rank often left one wanting, and it is tough to withhold.
It is unfortunate, but there are plenty who entered SS rank but were not ready.
There is a good reason why all of them are withholding their strength. By continually refining their Ki and keeping at a lower rank will allow them to solidify their foundation. It works in the way of increasing pressure to compact their inner energy. The container that is their body remained at the same holding capacity, but the compressed Ki increased their effective capacity like a pressurised bottle.
As their holding capacity increases with their ranks, it will be harder, and thus it is wiser to start early.
They must do this if they wish to stand a chance against Triple S rankers that had trained for centuries or longer.
And even then, they will be tremendously outmatched in a one-to-one battle.
However, there is another way to shorten the gap with those old monsters.
As long as they have techniques that can baffle those ancient cultivators, they stand a better chance. It wasn’t an easy thing to achieve considering that there are little one would not see after hundreds or thousands of years. What’s more, the technique’s practicability is no less crucial to its success: By creating a technique that none had ever imagined before, doesn’t mean it is useful. It is only useful if it works, and often, it is hard to tell what would work in a particular situation.
To this end, Kairos had to keep improving and create as many original martial techniques as possible. It made him the best candidate to take down a single, powerful, warrior. And, given the chance to refine his techniques, he was more than happy to do so.
Combined with his physique that is more powerful than even the barbarians, he had the ability to charge in and out of the enemy army without danger.
“Rakshasa… He is a Rakshasa!”
“The Rakshasas walk among us again!”
“Our Frosthral is finished… We’re all finished, they have returned for revenge.”
Whispers of the name of an ancient extinct race followed Kairos after he had slain the Barbarian Lord and struck fear in his enemies.
Most did not think that the Rakshasas truly returned, but there were others, and the title given to Kairos quickly spread.
The Rakshasas was a small tribe with few members that existed millions of years ago. They were few in number but dreadful existences.
Born with overwhelming might that rivals the dragons and phoenixes, they treated every other race as their prey.
They toyed with life, ate man raw and drunk their blood.
The Devas tribe and Ausra tribe that were warring at that time, were forced to stop and form an alliance, and through them, they gathered the Aesir, the Shakya, and the Vanir to extinguish this evil flame that threatens to scorch their lands.
It was the first time in history that the five tribes combined their might and after a terrible war, they utterly eradicated the Rakshasas, but the legends of their enemy and the fear they brought had been passed down.
As descendants, they have seen the Rakshasas murals of old, those monsters were painted as beings perfect in beauty and power, stained red with blood, walking among corpses laughing and amused.
The gentle smile on Kairos’ face as he charged in and out of the Frosthrals struck that cord in their hearts.

The Loyal Ones [Dark Biopunk Fantasy]
TLDR; A slave monster survives horror, war and servitude, while trying to live with himself. Thralls are a race of monstrous slave soldiers, in a universe where biological magic takes the place of technology. Centuries ago, their ancestors were desperate humans, who volunteered to be transformed for the Poison War. Today their unfortunate descendants are still soldiers and laborers. In contract law they are 'corporate wards'; slaves owned largely by arms dealers. Dally Harper starts this story as a champion cage fighter. He is one of the 'lucky' ones. It's all downhill from there. Content Warning: Explicit violence and gore, slavery, implied sexual assault. None of these are framed as positive or glorified, however they do have a strong impact on the plot and main characters.
