《The Bartender at the End of the Universe》Ch 298: Running Towards Explosions

The hollow king sat facing the corner of the room. On the opposite end of the room, Death was sitting facing another corner with his arms crossed as he sat there pouting. Abraham was tied by thick strands of rope to a chair, with even his hands and legs bound in place as well.
"What if I have to scratch my nose?" Abraham asked with a smirk.
"You should've thought of that before you broke out the first time we tied you up," Narissa said with a sigh. "Is Pockets still gone?"
Ted nodded. "Yep, she cartwheeled out of here when she first changed, and still hasn't come back."
"That is unfortunate," Sid stated. "Despite her eccentricities she is quite useful in a fight of any sort."
"Yeah, plus she's alone and easier to pick off like this." Ted added.
Pfft, that's if she even can be taken down at all. Death grumbled. She practically ignores all the rules.
"Hey! What did we say?" Narissa scolded. "You've got to be quiet while you sit in the corner."
But, that's not fair! Death complained. He's always quiet anyway! That's more of a punishment just against me.
"Just put up with it for now," Ted offered. "Think up some new moves to do on your skateboard, and it'll be over with before you know it."
"Except he is supposed to be contemplating his reasons for being put in the corner." Sid reminded him. "It is part of the punishment to try and ensure his actions are not repeated."
Ted sighed. "I suppose that makes sense. But it's not..."
BOOM!
A distant explosion rocked the room they were in.
"Do you think that was him?" Ted asked.
"He isn't really an explosion kind of guy," Og'drimun offered.

"Pockets is out there," Sid reminded them. "And she would definitely use explosives."
"So shouldn't we go check on her?" Ted asked.
"You want to abandon all our half-hearted preparations?" Narissa asked.
Ted rubbed the back of his neck. He knew it wouldn't be safe, and despite his natural dislike of clowns, he felt bad at the idea of leaving her on her own. But that'd be throwing away everything they did. Not to mention Abraham, the hollow king, and Death needed to be separated and supervised.
"It's not the smart decision," Ted said. "But...but it feels like the right decision."
Narissa scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Bleeding heart," she said as she tried to hide a smirk.
"It sounds like going after her is your decision." Sid interjected. "So there is no reason to second guess it."
Oh, uh...I'll go! Death offered. You know I'm just so worried about that poor girl. I, uh...yeah, I just have to make sure she's alright.
"Did that perhaps sound more convincing in your head?" Azrail asked.
Uh...I mean, if it didn't sound that convincing out loud, then definitely. Death said. Cuz that was super convincing to me. Real heartfelt, you know?
"Hah! You really need to practice lying then," Abraham scoffed. "That was worse than a child who just learned to talk."
"Come on guys, don't start again." Ted sighed. "But Death does have a point."
Ted turned to the hollow king. "Do you want to come along with us?"
The hollow king was still facing the corner. Slowly his head turned to one side, and then to the other.
"Huh, that was a lot more obvious of an answer than I was expecting," Ted said. "Well, what about everyone else? I already know Death wants to go."

Abraham tried to lean back in his chair, but ended up just flinging himself backwards because he was tied directly to the chair.
Narissa frowned. "I'll go, but first..."
She strolled behind Abraham, and pulled out a small strand of string from her pouch. With one hand she forced Abraham's chair up a little too quickly. The string in her hand straightened up and then sparkled in the light. She rotated her fingers, and the one strand was suddenly four.
With a flick of her wrist, she threw the solidified string down. Each one pierced through a different leg of the chair. The strands swelled in the legs, and held the chair firmly into the ground.
"There, now we can go without having to worry about this poor little boy hurting himself by being careless again," Narissa cooed as she smiled contentedly.
"Did you..." Abraham tried to shake the chair, but it refused to budge even an inch. "Did you bolt me to the floor?!?"
"If you keep it up. Why, ill have to find something to cram in that annoying little mouth of yours," Narissa threatened.
"Come on Narissa, you don't have to go that far," Ted said. "Just let it go."
"Ugh," Narissa grumbled. "He's acting like a child, and I absolutely hate children."
So, uh...we gonna get going? Death asked.
As they figured out who actually wanted to go, a headless shape picked himself up off of the ground. In his hand was a stick with a plain mask attached to the top. He lifted up the mask to where his head should have been, and the mask began to contort and change.
The mask had only simple features, with holes her the eyes and a mouth. The eyes shifted around as if the mask was looking to different sides. And then, words began to come out of the hole for the mouth.
What fresh hell before me is this?
Have I absconded from the abyss?
Or did my plans simply go amiss?

The Core of a Factory
An abandoned steampunk arms factory, in the middle of a conflict torn former state of the Empire it served, gains a soul. This transforms it into a Lord, capable of turning land into power. Beset by enemies on all sides it must figure out how to win the war its creators lost a century ago. This is a progressive Dungeon Core novel (which is to say the core will progress and expand in scale, eventually) across multiple dimensions with different characteristics (e.g. steampunk, magic, mythological). It has rationalist leanings (paragraphs of reasoning) and litrpg leanings (there are stat blocks). The core game mechanical idea is something like "what if different flavors of magic power actually did come from controlling land" and then the story is: "what if there was a flavorless (artifact deck) dungeon core". Chapters will be relatively short (my aim is that in three column format each would fit on a wide screen monitor), the first few chapters - setting up the main character and mechanics - are currently the longest in the entire series. I write chapters in blocks, and then release them one a weekday (M-F; 6 PM GMT, unless RoyalRoad's publish thing screws up) until I run out. There may be a few days of gaps here and there if someone finds an egregious error I have to re-write around or if I am behind. In general though one can read this once a weekend. I may do slight retconns and edits, I'll make sure to put it in an authors note if I do.

YAOS 1 - Limitless Adventures - Yet Another OP Story Book 1
December 23rd 2018: Book 1 is now up at Smashwords and at Amazon. December 30th 2018: V1.1.2 of YAOS Book 1 is out, some content additions, fixed typos. Amazon's enhanced typesetting now displays tables properly. YAOS is shown through the eyes of some genius athlete getting OP inside a VR, ah wait, Full Immersion game, ?F.I.O?. Not a Hero, not a Nerd, just a driven individual paying for mistakes made, biding time until he can return to the Real World. He isn't defined like you'd normally do it, you can pick his looks and name all on your own, just like you do in video games. Believe it or not, keeping his looks undefined is harder than you think. His backstory isn't expounded in detail, but it drives his choices. Book 1 isn't about depressing sob stories but about fun and rushing forward, pursuing new horizons. Oh, and you'll end on a cliffhanger! Well, most serials do, so you will probably expect that without being told explicitly. But it isn't that bad, there's a lot of reveals and more to come once this book, that is the first in a planned three-part series, is finally ready for release on amazon et al. The published version will have: 1.) Godawful speaker tags, I hate them, they make you stop thinking and speed up editing so much. In hindsight they should have been in to begin with. But I stand by my goals proclaimed earlier. You guys should think while reading, that is the whole point of the exercise. Apply the knowledge and ideas, improve yourself, get creative! 2.) Pretty colored tables, the damned blue boxes, a lot of work, 69 in one book. Finally fixed amazon's centering issue. Can't say I liked the hours needed to debug that. 3.) The promised Mitara chapters. 4.) A cover! 5.) And lastly, updated polished versions of several chapters. MC shares more of his past, some terrible chapters (esp. 32) finally work. Some new scenes, minor rewrites in parts. Text flow and other issues. The current challenge is to maintain essential ambiguity while satisfying people wanting to know more without thinking three steps ahead. Balancing one with the other is tough. The smut which was in remains, but the story told is not to be superseded by it. A 15+ rating for the first book is also important, not to mention, YAOS wasn't meant to contain any smut to begin with. If the Author can turn to writing full time his output should increase, so please support YAOS #1 once it does finally release. ~Thank You~ No maps so far, that should be in, but is really hard to get done right. Again, tips are appreciated. Update September 2017: Stubbed chapters, sorry guys, currently don't have time to upload them elsewhere, polishing book 1 and 2, writing 3, takes precedence. Book 1 is in heavy editing, too much to keep synced and continuing editing. I'd need a site which offers JS-free rapid managing of chapters and comments. Coding one myself or setting a premade up is out of scope until I'm done with the books. RRL-old offered that, nuff said. This is only here because the author believes in fairies, nobody reads this, most likely. October to December 2017: Life threw some curveballs. February 2018: Book 2 draft 1 completed, at ~150K words. Book 2 is fairly epic in scope, requires 1 rewritten chapter, some editing. Tables and miscellanea are in, but needs at least a grammar pass. March 2018: Book 3 at 28k words, first arc, rest needs serious planning for spin-off and satisfying conclusion. July 2018: Yet another proofing/editing session of books 1-3, 101+ chapters, ~300k words. B3 at 48k, starts out great, but no ETA, no wordcount limit, in flux. But prioritizing my writing cannot be done, I hate the delays as much as you, but you will prefer the whole released in a timely fashion rather than wait. Knowing myself how excruciating waiting can be, at least you'll get significantly polished versions and an ETA on book 2 by release of book 1. December 23rd 2018: Book 1 is now up at Smashwords and in the process at Amazon et. al.. . To all who wait patiently, offered feedback, thanks again!
