Chapter 2 – 6 (part 1)
Unexpected Reward and Revenge
“I-I am a member of the Gunjo City Knights, the Knight Captain of the 4th Division, Primera Von Sanga. I’ve been entrusted with full authority over this incident.”
She gave her self introduction while straightening her back.
“Sanga?”
Captain… My attention was drawn to Primera’s last name, as it was the same as the Duke who ruled over this territory.
I quickly used Appraisal.
Name: Primera Von Sanga
Age: 20
Race: Human
Title: Third Daughter of House Duke Sanga, Knight Captain of the 4th Division of Gunjo City Knights
and this information appeared. She really was a lady of House Duke Sanga (a very good place).
“Yes, I am the third daughter of House Duke Sanga, that’s correct.”
“Hmm is that so. Then, what will you do?”
I continued to talk about not so important things.
“Um, what I’ll do, that’s…”
“Since this is a business deal. If you’re not going to trade, I’ll take my business elsewhere.”
“You would do that?”
It felt like Primera was asking ‘Really?’…like if I was actually serious. This attitude was considerably different than the one I was first met with.
“If you give us a down payment, and we draw up a contract, I’d accept a delayed payment in installments. It wouldn’t be enough for the jewellery however.”
“But the jewellery is more important…” she resignedly said.
“Can you pay out? Such a large sum all at once, 20,000,000G or more. Because if we displayed them on auction, it’s almost guaranteed to be worth more.”
I tried to make it clear that I wouldn’t bend on this point.
“I understand. But, please hold back on displaying them for a little while. My father… Duke Sanga, I’ll consult with him.”
With drooping shoulders, I agreed to her added condition.
“Got it. But please, if it’s possible give me your reply within 10 days. Because the deadline for opening new auction listings is drawing near.”
You could register for auction listings via the guild, but I wanted to sort out my plans for the near future, so I wanted a quick reply.
After we agreed, we discussed the contract with the help of a witness from the guild. The reward for eliminating the thieves, the selling price of the thieves now turned slaves, selling off the weapons and the reward for saving Serna-san and the other women, all added up to a 4,500,000G payment. It was concluded that they would make a down payment of 500,000G immediately, and the remaining amount to be paid would be 2,000,000G two months later, then another 2,000,000G two months after that.

“Then I’ll hand over the bodies of the thieves to you. Where should I leave them?”
They told me that the captured thieves could be handed over as they were, but the dead bodies should be brought to the Knights Headquarters. It would have been bad to expose the bodies in a place like this.
I noticed that when I got close to the carriages holding the captured thieves, Banza was there and when he realized I was near he became horribly frightened. He convulsed, leaking once again, and the knights seemed to be taken aback.
Banza would receive the death penalty, the other thieves would serve as slaves, probably made to mine raw ore.
When we finally had a break, Serna-san came by along with a man.
“For saving Serna, you have my deepest thanks. I am Serna’s uncle, Marcus.”
He greeted me very politely. I would be so glad if that group of knights had even half…… no, even a quarter of the manners he displayed just now.
Marcus was Serna’s uncle on her mother’s side, the younger brother. They didn’t have a terribly strong connection, but as he was an accounting assistant for the city’s government, he seemed a very brilliant man (according to Flute, anyways).
“No, I only really just saved her by chance though…”
“Nevertheless, it’s still a fact that you saved her!”
I tried to turn his words of praise down, while Serna had been bowing low with her head down all the while.
After that, Marcus tugged her back up and took her to see a doctor. As he left, he told me that, ‘if anything should happen, I can lend you some aid so please feel free to call me at any time.’
Next, in order to write the contract, I went to the Knight’s Headquarters. Flute came along with me, to act as a witness.
I was putting the dead bodies in a corner of their training area, making a big pile of frozen corpses. When the knights and soldiers saw it, a number of them threw up on the spot, while others dashed off to find a toilet.
They were frozen via ice magic so there was no chance they would thaw, and also with magic there was no worry about them eventually rotting.
With Flute-san as a witness, the same terms were written into 3 identical contracts. Myself, the knights and the guild each had a copy for safekeeping.
After leaving the Knight Headquarters I started to head back to the guild but, as it was already getting late, we headed back to our respective inns. The following day, in the afternoon, I decided to show up at the guild and dissolve the party.
The same old innkeep greeted me when I returned to the Full Belly Inn. It looks like the bar was closed today.

“Oh, Tenma you look like you’re back safe and sound. Fighting off the thieves all by yourself, huh? And with one large cry, making an enemy of the knights or something? Some stories have already reached me.”
It sounded like the truth had already been a little exaggerated via rumors, so I corrected him while I checked in.
“Ah, here’s your key.”
He gave me the same room key as before.
“But you were really quick, weren’t you? You had said you planned on being gone for a number of days, so the room still hasn’t been cleaned yet.”
“Ah, I can do the cleaning myself. Also, in about 10 days I might take off again.”
I said and talked about the auction.
“That’s quite the sum! I didn’t think a newcomer could earn that much!”
he said, surprised. His wife made an appearance just then.
“Dear, he can talk about this later. It’s enough that Tenma has come back.”
The innkeep heeded her warning, then turned to me and said,
“Tenma, welcome home. If you don’t mind eating leftovers, you’re welcome to them.”
“Yes please.”
I replied, and they brought out dinner. Although they said it was merely leftovers, some herb grilled chicken had been made to go with it. It was pretty good, so this time I asked about the recipe she used to make it.
After finishing dinner I was tired so I decided to back to my room to sleep.
“Grandpa, granny, I’m going to bed now, good night.”
“Ah, good night.”
“Good night.”
Both of them saw me off, and I went back to my usual room. As I went in, it felt like it was my own home and calmed me.
“It feels more like mental tiredness than being physically tired. Maybe I’ll go to sleep early so tomorrow morning I can go and bathe.”
The nearby bathhouse was useful for those working late, with hot water available even early in the morning, it was very convenient.
“Good night. Slalin, Shiromaru.”
I opened the bag and spoke to them, but snoring was their only reply. I closed the bag with a smirk and wrapped my blanket around me.

The next day, I opened my eyes to see Shiromaru and Slalin’s faces right in front of me. Shiromaru was still half in the bag, poking his head out.
“Good morning, you two. What’s the matter?”
While I was asking them, a huge growling sound came from Shiromaru’s belly.
“Ah, I get it. I’ll make some food then.”
With that, the two of them cheerfully went back into the bag.
I was smirking again while getting changed, then went down to the garden.
Looks like their meal today will be based on things I can make with veggies. Slalin was delighted, but Shiromaru seemed disappointed. He looked at me with sparkles in his eyes at first, but before long resigned himself to eating the vegetables.
I decided to eat breakfast and head to the Guild early.
Even thought it was still before noon, it was lively within the guild. When I entered, it got quiet for a moment. Occasionally, I overheard things being whispered about Banza and his thieves, but nobody talked to me about it directly.
Putting their whispers aside, I went up to the quest board and looked at all of the requests in order.
I saw among them one from a mountain about a half day’s travel away. There was a special quest to exterminate the monsters called Rock Birds.
Many special quests weren’t limited by things like rank. The requestee had indicated that anyone could take it on, and the written quest stuck to the board seemed valid even without the usual limits. You didn’t need to fill out an application to apply.
The quest stated that for some reason Rock Birds have been increasing in number lately, so they hope to thin their numbers before someone gets injured.
Rock Birds had wings as hard as stone, meaning you couldn’t land a lethal blow on them with ordinary weapons. They were bird type monsters with a total body length of 1.2m~3m, but with their wings spread it easily surpassed 3m. They were capable of flying quite high, so defeating one alone was said to be difficult.
However, their feathers were used as ornaments or in making weapons and armor, and their meat was edible. The meat was delicious and low fat, so it was particularly popular among women.
And then, we can’t forget about their eggs. They had high nutritional value and were rich in flavor. Gram for gram they were worth more than the meat was. The eggshells were also thick and tough, so they were used in processed goods.
It was 1,000G per bird taken down, and you were allowed to keep the raw materials dropped, too. It seemed like a really good quest. I’ll go out hunting them tomorrow.
I looked around for other requests that sounded good but none of the others attracted my attention like the Rock Bird quest did.
While I was going over the quests, Flute noticed me and called me over.
“Tenma-san. Could you please come here for a moment?”

Blood & Noodles
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] As they always have, humanity hunts the gods roaming the world, craving the supernatural power that flows within their veins. Even a drop is zealously guarded, passed from master to student through the ages. It is with this stolen power that the Blooded - those with divine blood coursing through them - grasp beyond mortality and achieve prestige, power, and greatness. Yet, for every fraction of power gained, thousands perish, slain by the gods' supernatural prowess. But everything is beginning to change. Eight years ago, for the first time in human memory, a god was felled. Part-time chef and full-time nuisance Orvi wants nothing to do with gods. Living in a derelict city, his only concerns are ensuring his adopted family's restaurant is prosperous and how to best beat the neighbourhood boys in a fight. If he's lucky, he might even snag a date with the farmer's daughter at the market. But even though he cares nothing for the gods or their blood, the world won't leave him alone forever. Because to reach godhood, one must first leave their humanity behind. *** The first arc of Blood & Noodles follows the adolescent Orvi as he attempts to navigate his rapidly changing home and - by his own definition - protect his family. The story is told almost entirely in the first-person, from the perspective of a teenager who isn't always the sharpest tool in the shed. There are tragic elements, especially in the current arc. It's character-focused and driven, though the protagonist's shenanigans are backdropped by a world operating independently from him. Orvi's a generally light-hearted character, and though the story veers into darker territory, I also want it to be able to make readers smile. Action sequences, despite the fantastical elements, are meant to be grounded and clearly-conveyed; Orvi is a brawler, not a warrior. I'm trying to write a story that's enjoyable to read and flows nicely, mainly because it's more fun to write. I'm also trying to improve my writing, so any feedback, whether positive or negative, is welcome!
