《Cloud 69》31:

It didn't take a long time for me to figure out that something happened last night. Something big.

Carson hardly spoke to me all day, and if other people were around, including our friends, he would ignore me. I was angry about it, but he's an asshole, so I kind of brushed it off.

Luna was hard to find, too. When I could find her, however, she would at least have the decency to stop and talk to me. She seemed to know something about whatever happened, because she had this nervous look in her eyes and they would scatter around.

Even Zach was being shady, and he's usually rock solid. He didn't really hang out with any of us today he; he sat with some of his baseball buddies all day.

And Dylan. I have no idea why, but Dylan was in a really awful mood. He kept quiet all day, and practically ripped the head off of anyone who came near him. I tried talking to him earlier, but he made up some lame excuse about having to meet with a teacher. Maybe he was just grumpy from his hangover.

Jason was the only one still acting normal, and by that I mean chaotic as hell. He spent most of the day with TK, however, and had somehow managed to convince TK to purposefully get a detention so they could spend time together after school.

The whole day just seemed so off. I'm telling you, something happened. I just had to figure out what.

"Jason will you stop sucking TK's face off for one minute!" I tugged at his shirt.

He groaned but pulled away from TK. "What, Madeline?"

"What happened last night?"

"Mads, I remember literally just as little as you do."

"So you have no idea why everyone is acting so weird?"

He looked away.

"Jason, what do you know?"

"Just tell her, J," TK spoke up.

Jason sighed, "Alright. This morning Carson and Dylan were talking in the kitchen. I couldn't hear what it was about, but it seemed pretty serious. I fell asleep shortly after, but ever since, they've been kind of weird. Listen, Mads, I'm sure it's nothing."

He gave me a not-so-comforting, comforting pat on the shoulder before heading off towards his last class, pulling TK down the hall with him.

"Right," I said. "Nothing."

Nothing. Except maybe every single thing that Carson and I have done that Dylan doesn't know about.

Nothing.

Detention started thirty minutes ago. The 80 year-old supervisor had already fallen asleep.

TK and Jason were sitting in the back corner of the room, making out and paying attention to nothing else. I made the wise decision to not sit anywhere near them. Dylan was sitting alone in the front of the room, his hood pulled up, and his head resting on his desk. Carson sat off to the side. He had his legs kicked up on the seat in front of him, his head was rolled back, ear buds plugged in, and his eyes were closed. Zach and Luna were sitting a few desks over from me, involved in conversation.

I didn't know what to do. I figured my best bet at this point would be to try and talk to Dylan, so I slid into the desk next to him.

"Hey," I smiled.

He lifted his head up from his desk, looked at me, and then put his head back down.

I frowned, "Dylan?"

"What, Madeline?" His tone was sharp and just dripped with anger.

"What's up with you?"

"There's nothing up with me."

"Dylan."

"You wanna talk, Maddie? What's up with you?" Dylan shouted. He had picked his head up from his desk and stared at me with narrowed eyes.

"I'm sorry, are you upset with me?"

"No, Madeline. I just don't want to look at you right now."

"Excuse me?"

"You're a liar, Maddie! You lie to me, and to Luna, and to yourself! I'm sick of it! I can't take it anymore!"

I was aware that everyone was now looking at us. Luna had a pitiful look on her face, but I couldn't tell if it was for me or Dylan. Zach had shrunk back in his seat. Even Jason and TK stopped swapping spit to look at what was going on. Only the supervisors, who was still asleep, and Carson weren't looking. Carson was looking everywhere except at us.

"Dylan, what the hell are you playing at?"

He ran a hand through his hair, "Don't. You know I'm right. Just admit it."

"Admit what? I don't even know what lies you're talking about!"

He laughed in a menacing sort of way, "It's over, Madeline. I already know that you've been fucking Carson."

He was fuming. His face was red, and his eyebrows were dipped so far in, it looked like just one brow. His face was twisted and his jaw was clenched, and tiny wrinkles appeared around his narrowed eyes.

I tried to hide how surprised I was. I knew one day he would find out. I just didn't expect it to happen like this.

"Okay, Dylan. You're right, I'm sorry. I get that I probably should have told you, but what difference does it make? You have no right to be mad about who I choose to hook up with!"

"I'm not mad! I just don't want to look at you right now."

"So, you're mad that you're not mad?" I asked, kind of confused. "You're going to have to explain."

He groaned, "I'm mad that I've known for months. You think I didn't notice that you two were hanging out together or that you weren't ripping each other's throats out? You think no one notices you guys going into empty classrooms? I noticed. It's not like you guys ever really tried to fucking hide it!"

"So then why are you yelling at me?!" I became aware that I was shouting back at him.

"Because, you're an idiot!" He yelled. The room went completely silent.

"You're a fucking idiot, Maddie. And so is Carson. And I just-"

"You just what, Dylan?"

Dylan stood up from his seat, "I'm tired of you pretending you don't see it! You've lied to everyone so you could fuck Carson, and if you weren't lying to fuck Carson, you were lying just so you could be with Carson. You've been doing it the entire year, and you still can't figure out that you're in love with him!"

I just stared at him, looking stupid with my mouth hung open and my cheeks burning like hell. I didn't know how to respond to that. I knew he was just trying to get under my skin, but he was doing a damn good job. Besides that, I really wanted to punch him right now.

I shook my head, "Shut up, Dylan. You know nothing."

"No, Madeline. It's you who knows nothing!" He was seething. "You're so obsessed that you can't even see that he's in love with you too! He's fucking in love with you and you're so scared of it that you won't acknowledge it!"

Dylan looked around the room, his eyes landing on Carson. Dylan pointed at him, then turned back to me. "If you don't believe me, you can ask him yourself."

With one final huff, he stormed out of the room, pushing the door open with much more force than needed, and letting it slam shut behind him.

"Carson?" I tried. He turned his head to stare out the window.

"Well. That escalated quickly." Jason said, breaking up the silence. "On that note, it's been an hour, so we're gonna head out."

I watched out of the corner of my eye as Jason and TK left, followed by Zach and Luna.

"Is it true?" I asked. My voice came out quiet and raspy. I didn't realize that I was really close to crying until the water started to blur my vision. I don't even know why I was on the verge of tears.

He finally looked up at me. His eyes were red and so was the rest of his face.

Carson stood up from his seat and grabbed my hand, "Let's go."

"Where are we going?"

"To talk."
