《The Software Detective》2.7 Catch the Killer

I walked to the next train car, and I could see Boipelo sitting in his chair, staring out the window. He didn't look upset, not even a little depressed. On the contrary, he looked mildly concerned. Given the circumstances, I can understand the concern. It's not every day you lose your boss and job all on the same day.

"Tom, I found Artyom, and I am arresting him now." A man said over my earpiece. I hadn't heard his voice; he must have been on the operatives that were stationed in the front. "When it comes to catching bad guys, I'm never going to give up until they've been caught."

"Oh, thanks for the dedication. I'm sorry I didn't get your name?" I said into the earpiece, walking past Boipelo.

"The name's Rick Rollington. It's a pleasure to meet you." Rick said into the earpiece. He can't be serious. He must be pulling my leg.

"Uh thanks Rick, I will be right there." I said. I started to jog so I could get to them before the train stopped. I had just reached car 1, then it occurred to me, I should bring Boipelo in for questioning.

A ding came from the loudspeaker overhead. "Thank you for riding with us. When the train comes to a complete stop, please exit the train. Remember, if you need to go to the next stop, switch trains." The conductor announced.

Shit, I had to get to Boipelo before he got off the train.

I ran toward the Boipelo sitting. It was harder to maneuver through the mass of people grabbing their luggage and exiting the train.

I arrived at where Boipelo was sitting, but the booth was empty except for the water bottle Bruno drank from. I looked out the window and watched Bruno walk over to a nearby trash can and slip something off his hands. Boipelo looked back and saw me staring at him through the window. He placed a finger under his eye and pulled it down to show the lower whites of his eye then stuck his tongue out. Boipelo turned around and blended into the crowd with the nearby crowd.

I felt like a deer in headlights. I was stuck there; I knew I should have run over to grab him before he got away. I couldn't help but think : Was I wrong?

"We got him Tom. Great work!" Kalina said, breaking me from my trance.

"Uh, hold him there, I need to check something first." I said, leaving the train for the garbage can.

Placing gloves on my hands, I walked over and saw there was a pair of gloves in the trash can. I plucked them from the trash and held them up. They were the average gloves you would wear. They looked as though they were 3d printed to match a person's skin tone, Boipelo's skin tone.

When I turned them over, my smart glasses highlighted the fingerprints and notified me they had found a match.

My mouth dropped when I saw the results. I hurried back on the train. Luckily, I made it in time before anyone threw out the water bottle. I picked up the water bottle and my subincisions were confirmed.

When I reached the group of FBI agents, I saw Artyom talking to Kalina and the 4 operatives next to her. There were the two disguised as workers, Emily and Fatima. Near them were two dressed in civilian clothing, now wearing FBI agent lanyards. One gentleman was a bit taller with a long orange beard and slick back hair with a fade. The other looked as though he was ripped from a 1980s music video. He had a black mullet, white T-shirt with a jean jacket over top, long black jeans and shiny white shoes.

The taller man was the first to see me walking up. "Hey there Tom! Great job finding the Killer Moderator! Oh, where are my manners? My name is Brendon Murphy. I was the operative at the back of the train." He reached out and shook my hand.

"Nice to meet Brendon, and thanks for your help." I said, shaking his hand.

The next to walk over was the 1980s fashion magazine. "Hey there Tom, it was a pleasure working with you. If you need my help again, just let me know you're a good person. I'm never going to let you down." Rick said. Oh, he was serious.

"Umm, thanks." I said, shaking his hand.

Kalina looked over and smirked. "So Tom, you have something to tell us?"

I held up the gloves. "Artyom, you're free to go. We got the wrong guy."
