By the time Daniel arrives at the hospital, Andy is in a recovery room. Thanks to my little lie, I am able to get Daniel in to see her with me. Gavin chose to stay out in the waiting room to give us privacy. She’s still sedated from surgery. Daniel isn’t crying, but his emotions are clearly displayed on his face. He’s on the verge of tears. He sits down next to Andy, bracing his elbows on the bed and lacing his fingers together.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know. One minute we were having fun at the club. Next, she’s pale, weak, stumbling, and bleeding. When she lost consciousness, Gavin drove us here. They took her back to a room, then to surgery soon after.”

“Why did she need surgery? What happened?”

I seriously don’t want to be the one to tell him. Or leave it to him to break the news to Andy. It’s either me or the doctors.

“I’m going to let the doctor explain everything to you. I’ll be out in the waiting room.”

I exit the room. The doctor is over at the nurse’s desk with paperwork in front of him.

“Dr. Keith? Andy’s boyfriend is here and would like to know what happened.”

“I’ll be with him in a minute.”

I feel bad for making the doctor explain everything, but he’ll explain it better. I wasn’t really paying attention when he was explaining the first time. I was too distracted by the fact that Andy was pregnant.

When he spots me, Gavin pats the seat beside him. I don’t hesitate to sit down. It’s one in the morning and I’m exhausted.

“How is he taking it?”

“Dr. Keith is going to explain everything to him.”

Gavin doesn’t ask any further questions. I take this opportunity to lean my head back against the wall, closing my eyes.
