I pace nervously in the waiting room of the hospital. They took Andy up for emergency surgery and refuse to tell me anything else. I dial Daniel’s number for the millionth time, getting his voicemail.

“Hey Daniel. It’s Skye again. Please call me back. It’s urgent.”

I hang up and clutch the phone. Gavin approaches me with two cups in his hands.

“I brought you a hot chocolate from the café across the street.”

I take it, smiling at him.

“Thank you.”

He sits in one of the beige hospital chairs, patting the seat beside him.

“Come sit. You need to relax.”

Just as I sit down, a doctor approaches us.

“Are you a relative of Miss Sanchez?”

“I’m her sister. Please tell me how she is.”

I have to lie or they won’t give me information. The doctor gives me a weird look and I can’t blame him. My skin compared to Andy’s, yeah. There’s a big difference in shade.

“She’s my step-sister but we’ve grown up together.”

This seems to clear up some of his confusion.

“Can I talk to you in private?”

“I’d prefer my boyfriend to stay with me.”

I hope I don’t shock the shoes off of Gavin with that statement, but I need someone beside me right now.

“We had to do an emergency hysterectomy on your step-sister.”

“What?!”

“Her miscarriage was so severe-”

“Wait. Miscarriage? Andy wasn’t pregnant.”

“She was. About six weeks along.”

I let this new information sink in. Obviously she didn’t know or else she wouldn’t have been drinking tonight. My phone rings, Daniel’s number flashing across the screen.

“Excuse me, I have to take this. It’s Andy’s boyfriend.”

I swipe across, answering the call.

“Hello?”

“Skye, what’s up? You sound off in your messages.”

“Where are you?”

“The Radisson, why?”

“Come to Regional.”

“Hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Panic colors his voice. I don’t want to break the news over the phone, but what else can I do to get him down here?

“Please just come to Regional. It’s an emergency.”

“Just tell me what happened please.”

“It’s Andy.”

I hear a strange sound come through the phone. Kind of like a sob. Or a gasp of some kind.

“I’ll be there as soon as I can. I’m leaving now.”
