《Mystery Contests & Writing Prompts》Contest 5 - It's All About Descriptions
Advertisement
Since our last contest's prompts were more for fun, we decided to really challenge you this time with a competition that will require you to put on your thinking hats and dig deep into your writing repertoire.
The task: Describe a murder scene - without really describing it.
Now you might scratch your head, thinking what are these people talking about, but what we mean is the old struggle with show v. tell. We want you to show us the murder scene, take us by the hand and drag us there, and give us all the impressions your main character has. Don't just describe it, make us feel it. Create a creepy ambiance. The more we can immerse into your world, the better.
Keep our first lesson of the Your Guide to Writing a Killer Thriller in mind that talks about 'The Three Acts' and make sure to give your short a proper beginning, middle and an end. Sounds tough? It might be, but we are also on Wattpad to improve our writing skills, so give it your best shot. You only lose out if you don't try.
Word limit for this: 2000 words
Deadline: Friday, January 27, 2017
Please tag your story #MysteryFriday and leave the link below in the comment section or your entry won't count. As usual, this cannot be an existing work, but has to be a newly written entry, either posted separately on your profile or as part of a competition collection. Please don't split up the entry into several parts (just one chapter).
Be creative and have fun with this - we are already excited to read what you come up with!!

William Crow is an orphaned teen on the cusp of manhood, and is also a member of a class known as "soulless", for in this world those who do not develop their own "soul skill" become known as such. Soul skills vary in range and rarity, having many different functions and uses; however, not having one automatically makes an individual have incredibly low standing amongst society. William's inability to develop his own soul skill, along with the loss of his parents at a very young age, drives him into the corner of life. Making him a reserved and often frightened individual. However, his life changes drastically when he is chosen for one of the "Scouting" lotteries, in which the capital city forces some of the soulless to scout potential danger zones for monsters or enemy units. It's during this "mission" that he discovers the power that lies within him: System.
