"Dr. Marks! Get over here!"
"Coming!"
I scurried across the hard metal floor with the tools of my partners latest invention of a newer, better microwave, setting them down on his workbench I sighed as he lazily gazed up at me with his usual snide expression.
"Can you move any slower?"
I clenched my jaw, wanting to shove those microwave pieces where the sun doesn't shine but I couldn't, I have to keep this job for now until I can get on my feet.
One day I will have a job over his head and make him do all my little boring odd jobs then put him down for not doing them quick enough.
Lazy ass jerk.
However, for now I'm stuck as a measly lab assistant, stuck doing his little tasks and dirty work he's too lazy to get up and do himself, and all for the love of freaking microwaves.
Asshat.
Moving my hair out of my eyes, I sit down at the computer and study hard for the next exam I had to pass in order to qualify for a promotion, just the math portion is making me dizzy.
I have worked my whole life in robotics and engineering so I could get high up in the companies and make a name for myself, one day I will create real robots, people like Dr. Will will have to praise me one day.
One day.
I typed slowly on the keys while listening to Dr. Will yell and scream at his contraption because the toast keeps burning on one side every single time he turns it on.
I laughed silently to myself at his ultimate failure, it's a microwave, how much can you really alter it before it gets dumb.
Silently sipping my coffee and mentally making fun of Dr. Will's very existence, I almost spit the hot drink on the computer screen as the CEO's assistant of the company walked up to my desk and spoke in a gruff, dry voice.
"Come with me, Miss Marks."
Eh?
Me?
The CEO'S assistants were well known around the area, they all walked the halls with us, their stiff demeanor causing everyone to shy away from them, The CEO is someone you never meet amd if you do, it's trouble.

They were like a secret cult of some kind, they all looked the same, white suits, expensive shoes, buzzed cut hair and black spy glasses.
They're terrifying.
Dr. Will stared at me in shock as I took a deep breath and nodded slowly, buttoning my lab coat together and began walking with him down the long white hallways, my chest clutched in fear.
What could this be about?..
Am I being shipped away to Siberia?
I don't do well in the cold.
Shaded in utter silence I listened to his expensive shoes tap along the stagnant white tile floor, I swear I can literally hear my heart beating in my chest, the silence is killing me.
Okay calm down Emily, maybe it's for something normal?
Maybe we had a breakthrough in the microwave industry and I'm getting an award.
The hallways seemed to go on forever, the walls beginning to blend in with the white and black speckled srltandard tiles, the air conditioner the only noise as we walked up and down each hallway and staircase.
Are these hallways getting longer?
At this point I can't help but to feel nervous, my stomach filled with butterflies and my knees starting to shake in fear.
Why did the CEO's assistant come get me?
Am I being like grandly fired?
I'm only 20, I can't be fired!
Taking a deep breath and shoving my sweaty hands in my pockets, I try to calm down my nerves a little bit, the sight of huge huge double doors encased in unbreakable steel causing my eyes to go wide.
I'm at the CEO's office?!
So I am seeing him.
No more cult-like weirdos.
The assistant put his hand on a scanner and opened the door while motioning me to go in, his dry demeanor sending chills down my spine.
Creepy...
I nodded and walked past him, pushing myself quietly through the door and feeling like an ant next to the doors and the creepy assistant.
Is he standing there so I can't leave?
Other than the expensive looking red wood floors, there really isn't much to the office, I always imagined a CEO's office to have fancier stuff.
Hmm...maybe he's boring?
Shifting my feet awkwardly, my eyes land to the middle of the room, a large wooden desk takes up most of the floor and on the desk was a small busted up robot, pieces scattered everywhere.

I mean, I guess the CEO of a robotics company would somewhat be into robotics.
I couldn't help myself but to walk up and examine it, the robotics engineer side of me taking over my usual everyday manners of not snooping someone's desk.
Looking around and seeing no one but the creepy assistant, I smile softly and pull a mini screwdriver out of my coat pocket for emergencies, seeing things broken makes me itch to fix it, it's like it's buried in my DNA.
Getting very close to the broken robot, I begin twisting the gears back in place softly, screwing in the intricate metal shreds, each with their own tiny screw, each piece clicking together in my head like a puzzle.
Popping the last piece in I watch with curiousity as the small robot comes alive, barking at me and resembling a small toy sized dog.
Cute...
I chuckle to myself at my grand work, soon another door opens in the side of the room and the CEO emerges out of it, my body jumping with light shock looking at his coal black hair slicked back, his eyes full of power and confidence when he looks over at me and chuckles.
"It seems I was right, you have skills that outweigh your current status."
I backed up from his desk and nearly tripped trying to get into the red velvet chair sitting in front of the desk.
"Um....no sir not at all I appreciate my job..."
My cheeks blushed a deep pink hue and I looked to the floor as he sat in his huge wheely chair and looked at me with dark hollow eyes.
"This is a robot that was built by an engineer that worked on it for 20 years. He called it "The Impossible Robot" and yet you put it back together in less than ten minutes."
I took a deep breath and chuckled nervously as he sat forward, his long fingers clasped together under his chin.
"I'm going to get to the point quickly Dr. Marks. The president ordered nineteen years ago for us to start building a robot that would possess a human figure and have human mannerisms fit to be a military robot capable of being around other humans, But for some reason he has a glitch that we cannot fix. So the president ordered we find an engineer that has the capabilities of fixing him, and you seem to have the skillset for the job."
Wait what-
I stared at him in pure white shock, he cannot be serious, I've only worked here two years.
"Sir...I'm honored to be considered for such a position, but there are engineers that have far greater skills than I have..."
He let out a soft chuckle and pointed at the tiny dog robot walking across the thick velveted carpet, his voice slightly low.
"I've tried this method on everyone in here and they couldn't fix the robot, but you did."
I looked down and swallowed hard, my hands shaking as they sit on the tops of my legs.
Work on a robot built by the government?
The CEO then sat forward in his chair and stared into my eyes intensely, his voice back to his regular thick confident tone.
"We want you to fix him and do a full study on his mind and how he functions. You will be alone in a laboratory completely cut off from any outside contact. There will be a room for you to stay in and you will be paid greatly after it is done, this study will only last for one year."
He?
The robot is a boy?
I looked up at him as he slid the contract towards and I swallowed hard, my hands at this point feeling like they're dripping with sweat.
Now I'm suppose to study a human robot? How do you study a robot?!
I closed my eyes and breathed for a second to try and calm myself down, my body practically vibrating with anxiety.
Then again..how could I say no to the CEO of the company I currently work at?
Picking up the pen, I took a deep breath and signed the contract, why? I guess I'll find out sooner or later.
