《The Healer Demands Payment!》Chapter 36 (Part1) - Accusations

Meng Qi actually should have been resting. After all, she was still a Qi Condensation cultivator. Although technically she could persist for several days straight without sleeping or resting, it would still take a toll on her body.
“Thank you, junior sister.” Lu Qingran saluted again. She wore the blue robe uniform of Qingfeng Valley’s disciples, and when bowing her head, a strand of raven-dark hair fell off, supported by a white jade pin on her hair bun.
Lu Qingran was very beautiful. When the mountain wind brushed upon her, a few more strands of hair brushed her fair cheeks. Slender waist, willowy back, and bright eyes. Indeed a stunning, fairy-like beauty.
“In the past few days, I searched through all the books I could get, and only found a brief passage mentioning something similar to the immortal devouring vine. That name isn’t even written in the book, and the symptoms and characteristics of the injury also aren’t mentioned.” Lu Qingran’s voice was pleasant to hear, with clear articulation and suitable volume. Everyone present could hear her clearly. “So, even my master and other elders didn’t realize that several senior brothers and sisters were injured by the immortal devouring vine.” Lu Qingran looked at Meng Qi and opened her lips slightly: “And thus, I don’t know how, by just a single glance, junior sister Meng was able to make a diagnosis that senior sister Lan Zhuxuan and the others were injured by it.”
“This is the first.”
Lu Qingran paused before went on: “Immortal devouring vine is a weapon from the Demon Realm. When junior sister Meng first entered Qingfeng Valley, you said that you grew up in Qingfeng Town and has never traveled outside before. But junior sister not only could recognize the vine’s injury at one glance but also know how to treat it. I…” She looked at Yan Mingfeng, “…have asked Elder Yan. Indeed, Qingfeng Valley Library Pavilion never has any record regarding immortal devouring vine.”
“This is my second question.”
“When junior sister Meng was going to treat the people injured by the vines, you happened to need five elements blue crane native to this area. Moreover, before junior sister left, demon cultivators came and attacked us almost every day and night before then ran away without any trace. However, after junior sister left to find the five elements blue crane, they never attacked us again. Those demon cultivators are exactly the ones who hurt our fellow disciples with the immortal devouring vines. It was too coincidental.”
“This is my third question.”
Lu Qingran spoke with a clear and logical exposition. Her tone also wasn’t aggressive. In the end, she saluted Meng Qi again: “Junior sister has worked hard, and I should let you rest first. But…” She turned her gaze to the sect leader: “My Master is kind. I have been greatly cared for by her, and she has a grace of teaching on me. She treated all disciples of Qingfeng Valley equally, and has never done injustice or favored a single disciple.”

Lu Qingran paused. Suddenly, she looked at Xun Yan with bright eyes: “Elder Xun defended junior sister Meng, and this junior did not dare to accuse him. But this junior could not accept the accusation he made to Master.”
Lu Qingran’s back was straight, and she looked at Xun Yan neither humbly nor arrogantly. Even though the other party was a powerful figure in the Nascent Soul stage that could crush her in one flick, she still didn’t afraid and kept maintaining her strong and unrepressed gaze.
“Wow…” Su Junmo stood beside Meng Qi. After holding back for a long time, he finally couldn’t keep his mouth shut any longer and muttered in a low voice: “That girl is very strong, ah! She isn’t interrogating you, Meng Qiqi, but pointing at this…” He squinted at Xun Yan: “Almost a Spirit Severing cultivator. Really courageous. But she is very filial, and her words seem reasonable.”
Su Junmo spoke fast and in a low voice. Except for Meng Qi and her group, others only saw his lips move quickly, but couldn’t catch his words.
Chu Tianfeng and Qin Xiumo once again glanced at Su Junmo. At this time, all other gazes were wholly focused on Lu Qingran and Meng Qi. They looked at Lu Qingran and then at Meng Qi. Lu Qingran’s questions were indeed seemed to be logical.
Meng Qi…how would she explain?
“Junior sister Meng.” Lu Qingran took a deep breath, “This senior sister isn’t suspecting or trying to make things difficult for you. It’s just all of our fellow disciples in Qingfeng Valley, especially the injured senior brothers and sisters, are full of doubts. Because of junior sister, they almost make a commotion and angered Elder Xun Yan.” She looked at Meng Qi: “Junior sister, can you answer these questions and solve the doubts in our hearts?”
Meng Qi’s eyelids drooped slightly, and she did not answer immediately. Except for Su Junmo, none of the people present spoke.
Xun Yan couldn’t help but cough slightly. Just now, he was too angry and lashed out impulsively. Unexpectedly, his action brought such trouble to Meng Qi. “Ahem…” Xun Yan took a step forward and broke the awkward silence. “This matter was caused by me. Since it is a misunderstanding, then I…”
Xun Yan has an amiable personality. Otherwise, the palace master of his sect wouldn’t send him to help Chu Tianfeng. He stood up for Meng Qi, but didn’t want to cause her any trouble.
“Elder Xun.” Meng Qi calmly interrupted, “Senior sister Lu Qingran is asking me, so I should be the one to answer.” She smiled gratefully at Xun Yan.
Even facing such accusations, there was nothing Meng Qi couldn’t say. She indeed knew the name of the immortal devouring vine from Su Fox. But when she met this chattery fox in her previous life, he had been injured by the vine for ten days, and couldn’t even maintain his human form. What Meng Qi saw was a fluffy five-tailed white fox. Su Junmo had fallen into a coma at the time, and could only lay on the ground motionless. Dark red blood and mud dirtied his long white fur, making him looked weak and pitiful.

Meng Qi couldn’t get any information from the unconscious white fox. She only smelled the lingering faint floral fragrance in the air. The scent was a bit peculiar but somewhat familiar. It was the smell of the forest after the rain, mixed with the sweet fragrance of white peaches, and the bitter taste of pine leaves. In addition, there was also a faint bittersweet aroma of charred sugar. That kind of smell was actually very relaxing and didn’t make people sensed any danger.
Meng Qi had examined the unconscious Su Fox, but found nothing except for the wound on his body. At that time, the chattery fox had already equivalent to a Spirit Severing cultivator and was even stronger than his current self. It was impossible for him to fell into such a state just because of skin trauma.
She pondered hard for a long time before finally remembered a description in a book she once read about a similar floral fragrance. At that time, she had not met her master yet, and most of her knowledge came from Qingfeng Valley’s Library Pavilion. Besides, she also read various bamboo slips she bought from Cloud Immortal Pavilion with the spirit stones she saved. All of them could be shown to the people here.
Facing Lu Qingran, Meng Qi smiled indifferently: “In Cloud Immortal Pavilion, we can buy three bamboo slips for two hundred first-grade spirit stones.” She paused for a moment, “They are: ‘Record of Demon Method,’ ‘Qingfeng Town Materia Medica’ and ‘Demon Realm’s Scenery.'”
Meng Qi took three bamboo slips from her storage bracelet. They were very ordinary books she bought from Cloud Immortal Pavilion. Because the books only wrote about local specialty and travel notes instead of spell or such, they were sold very cheaply. Even ordinary disciples in Qingfeng Valley could easily buy them after doing several elementary tasks.
Lu Qingran was startled. Chu Tianfeng waved his hand, and the three bamboo slips flew to her.
“Although Qingfeng Town is small, it is located at the border between the Eastern Realm, the Demon Realm, and Devil Realm. There are cracks in the boundary from time to time, allowing demon and devil cultivators to cross the border. So it isn’t strange that some books written by locals will have information about demons and devils. This book writes that the Demon Realm has a strange vine with flowers of various colors growing. The vine is extremely dangerous because it sucks other living being’s flesh, blood, and spiritual aura for its nourishment. After being injured by the vine, the body would exude a strange fragrance. It was as sweet as white peach and as bitter as pine and charred sugar.” Meng Qi said slowly.
Lu Qingran was speechless.
Meng Qi’s expression remained unchanged, and she calmly continued, “This one records the experience of a great senior who once entered the Demon Realm. The senior mentioned seeing a green vine that can bloom multi-colored flowers, and use the body of monster beasts as a nutrient to grow itself. It was an abnormal and dangerous monster. The flowers emit a bitter and sweet fragrance, like sugar and pine, and people should avoid when smelling it.”
Meng Qi pointed to the last bamboo slip: “This book is compiled by the senior who has seen various plants from the Demon Realm. The record is similar to the previous two. In addition, it also mentioned that the monster beasts injured by this fragrant vine will be thirsty and drink a lot of water.”
“Except for these three, there are also several similar books and related records.”
Meng Qi looked at Lu Qingran’s eyes: “When I enter senior sisters’ tent that day, I immediately smell this fragrance. Qingfeng Valley is a medical sect, when I was in the sect, senior sisters mostly only had light medicinal scent on their body, and I never smelled such a scent. So I was suspicious, and after a few inquiries, found out that they were indeed injured by a vine-like weapon, and always feel thirsty and hungry afterward.” She finished her words: “Thus, I suspected that they were injured by the vine described in these books.”
“Even so… “Lan Zhuxuan, who was supposed to soak herself with the five elements blue crane, was still standing in place. She looked at Meng Qi palely, but her eyes were flickering. “How do you know its name? And also the treatment method?” She recalled Xun Yan’s previous accusations and became more and more angry. “Is it also mentioned in those books?”
“No.” Meng Qi shook her head.
“So, you really are lying to us!” Lan Zhuxuan suddenly raised her voice, “You actually don’t know the cure! You…you want to kill us!”
Meng Qi stared at Lan Zhuxuan. She couldn’t tell them that she had once cured a person injured by immortal devouring vine. She, however, could guarantee that the method was correct.
To explain the logic clearly, it would take too much time. But she indeed could tell her thought of process when trying to save that Su Fox and how she reached that conclusion. Thinking of this, Meng Qi couldn’t help but look at Su Junmo again.
At that time, in order to save his life, she tried many methods she could think of, and gave him quite a number of unpleasant experiences. But this chattery fox generally only became noisier when in discomfort, and his endless prattle turned her into the receiving end of the discomfort instead.

Maybe with a bit of luck and planning, he can build a force to defend the world without anyone realizing it. Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
