October

Halloween night. Theresa never particularly liked or hated the holiday, but this year, as she sat on her front porch steps, next to Bella, handing out candy, Theresa decided that she extremely disliked the haunted holiday.

"Pretend to be happy at least" Charlie said as he walked past the two, down the steps to his police vehicle, "Your gonna scare the kids away."

"Bye Charlie" Theresa said as her uncle held his hat, nodding, at the two girls, before walking away.

"Be safe!" Bella called out to her father as he smiled and nodded before getting into his vehicle and driving off.

The two teenagers sat in silence before Bella cleared her throat, causing Theresa to look at her, candy wrapper in hand.

"What?" Theresa asked the girl as she stared at her, "Fine" She said before pushing her bowl of candy towards Bella, away from herself.

"Not like the kids want Twizzlers" Theresa said as she took a bite of her red licorice, "Kids have no taste these days."

"Now you're sounding like Charlie" Bella said, laughing.

"Maybe we should tell scary stories to past the time" Bella suggested, "Since the kids probably told their friends that we have shit candy."

"Nothing scares me anymore."

"The night before my 18th birthday I had a bad dream" Bella said, ignoring Theresa's protests.

"It was of nan. I don't know if you remember her, but I saw her. Then out of no where Edward appeared, I was so scared, I told him not to walk out into the sunlight. Nan would've freaked if she saw him-"

"Glitter?" Theresa said, cutting off Bella with a small smile.

Bella nudged the girl with her shoulder before continuing, "Anyway. Nan didn't freak out so I went to introduce them, but when I did, I realized it was me, looking in a mirror."

Theresa watched as Bella smiled sadly, "I was so scared of growing old, now-"

"It doesn't matter."

Theresa took a deep breath before speaking again, her eyes clouded with tears, "That was a scary story Bells."

Bella leaned her head on Theresa's shoulder.

"Bella?"

"Yeah?"

"Will we ever be okay?"

"I don't-"

"Trick or treat!"

The two teenage girls were so stuck in their own little world that they didn't even notice the little vampire walk up to them, pillowcase, already full of candy, open, ready for more.

Theresa grabbed the bowl of twirlers and handed it the the little girl, "Here" she said as she placed it into the young girls hands, "Happy Halloween."

"Teenagers are weird" Theresa heard the little girl say to her mom as she walked away from the house.

"That's it. I hate Halloween. Goodnight" Theresa said before getting up from the concrete step and walking inside the house, the screen door shutting behind her.
