《Royal Jester》26. Mason

"Would you mind grabbing my shoes for me?" Mason turned to look at Ana, who was currently finishing her makeup in the bathroom.

He let his eyes roam over her form through the doorway, lingering on the skin her dress didn't cover. It was a simple dress with puff sleeves and a skirt that flared out, but Mason thought she looked amazing. "Your white heels?" He thought that they might go well with the floral pattern she was currently wearing.

"Yeah, I think they're still in your room." Ever since they started dating, the couple was almost never apart, so every day after Ana was done with her lectures she went to Mason's room. It wasn't weird that she had left her shoes there.

"M'kay," he quickly kissed her on the cheek before heading to his bedroom. But upon entering the room he began laughing at the sight in front of him.

It seemed Ana had finally fucking pranked him again.

She had somehow managed to put all of his furniture on the fucking ceiling. His bed, dresser, desk, and bedside table were now all flipped upside down and hanging above him. "Holy shit," he chuckled.

He spotted her high-heels still laying on the floor and he shook his head as he picked them up. "Let me get this straight," he began as he made his way towards Ana. "You took however many hours putting my furniture on the damn ceiling but you weren't able to grab your shoes in the process?"

She shrugged innocently, "I suppose it must've slipped my mind." Mason couldn't hold back the snort the escaped him as he encircled her in his arms. "Hey-," she suddenly exclaimed with a pout. He made eye contact with her through the mirror only to see a long black line now drawn down the side of her face. "You messed up my eyeliner."

"Shit, my bad," he muttered. "Sorry, princess." He'd never used the nickname before but it suited her, she was one after all.

Ana rolled her eyes, "You're so annoying."

Mason grinned at her, "But you like me," he drawled. He watched as she sighed and grabbed a wipe from a package sitting in front of her. She then starting scrubbing at the mark on her face and he grimaced as he noticed her skin turning red from the rough treatment.

"Unfortunately," she grumbled.

"Hey calm down," he soothed as he plucked the wipe from her fingers. "You're gonna hurt that beautiful fucking face of yours. We can't have that now can we?"

He turned her face slightly and gently started wiping her skin, slowly removing the black ink still on her face. "No need to be that rough, see?" He turned Ana back around to look at the mirror so she could now see that the eyeliner was gone.

"Please," she scoffed. "You probably like it rough."

Mason's jaw dropped.

At his silence it seemed like she suddenly just realized what she said, her face turning red as she focused on the makeup on the counter. "What-," he shook his head. Did she really just say that? "What the hell?" He laughed with complete shock.

"What? It's true." Jesus fuck. Even when she was embarrassed she still managed to render Mason utterly speechless.

He was so fucking in love with her.

He shook his head to recollect his thoughts. "How did you even manage to put all of my shit up there?" He still couldn't wrap his head around it. "Is that why you wanted me to pick up all that stuff for you earlier?"

Earlier that day Ana had practically sent him on a wild goose chase, telling him that she was desperately craving a snack from back home. They were supposedly called Jammie Dodgers and he had gone to four different supermarkets before she abruptly decided she didn't want them anymore and instead told him to pick up ingredients to make homemade fruit tarts.

It had taken him almost four hours to get back to the dorm.

Since then he had spent his time in the living room after putting away the groceries, waiting for Ana to get ready for their celebration dinner with some of their classmates. They had almost all finished their finals by now and Ana thought it would be fun to treat everyone to a nice meal.

Mason personally thought that a nice date (with just the two of them) would have been better, but he was slightly biased.

"I did get a bit of help from some roommates of ours," she winked. "And - if you must know- I really did want Jammie Dodgers, I just happened to leave out the fact that they aren't sold in America."

Mason huffed, "Of course those dumbasses would help you; they like you more."

"Well if you would stop insulting them all the time, then maybe that wouldn't be the case now would it?" She shot him a look as she put some sort of liquid makeup onto her skin.

Mason couldn't resist, "What the fuck is that?"

"Foundation, it makes my skin look better. You're just lucky I put it on after I do my eyes, or else we would have been really late."

"Why do you need it? You look great without it." Mason's eyebrows furrowed. She was so perfect he couldn't even fathom how makeup of all things would be able to make her look even better.

She glanced at him through the mirror, "Just because."

"Well I think you should take it off."

Ana gave Mason the most adorably confused expression. "Why?"

He could confess that he liked seeing her without makeup because it meant that she was comfortable around him. He could tell her that while she didn't necessarily look better with it on it did enhance her features slightly and the idea of everyone else seeing her like that made him a little jealous.

Or he could even admit that no matter what she looked like, it wouldn't matter because he still loved her.

But, "Just because."

Mason let his hand fall on Ana's thigh, resisting the urge to roll his eyes when Caleb started talking again. He hadn't realized that the asshole would be here; if he had known he would've tried convincing Ana to cancel it.

Ana placed her hand on his own, squeezing his fingers seemingly habitually. He glanced at her just as she picked up her phone from her lap before she suddenly leaned towards him. His breathing stuttered at the closeness. "My sister wants me to call her," she explained in a whisper. "I'll be right back."

"Okay baby," he responded in an equally soft voice. He placed his hand on her waist as she stood and excused herself from the table. He watched her walk away before sighing as he ate a piece of his steak.

"So you guys are dating?" Mason looked up from his plate of food to see everyone staring. Were they talking to him? He looked at the girl who asked the question; Ally was it?

He cleared his throat, "Been over a month now."

"Oh really? You don't seem like her type." The fucking dickhead was at it again.

"I didn't think so either," he forced a smirk. The rest of the table laughed at his attempt of a joke whilst Caleb glared. "But - clearly - I am."

The asshole scoffed with a head shake and Mason took a sip of his water, clear satisfaction written on his face. "Crazy how that works right?" Mason had directed the rhetoric to the entire table but he made sure Caleb was looking at him when he said it.

"What's crazy?" Ana suddenly returned, settling back in her seat as Mason rested an arm across the top of her chair.

Mason glanced at her with a cheeky grin. "Just that you actually started dating me," and winked.

She shot him a look. "Even if I hadn't already had a crush on you, your confession would've made me like you. It was pointless to fight it," she shrugged.

Fuck.

One sentence. One single fucking sentence and Mason felt as if an entire zoo had suddenly been released in his stomach.

While Mason was struggling to keep his emotions in check (and holding back the urge to profess his love at that very moment) the table awed over Ana's words, demanding to know how he had confessed.

As she started explaining the situation - going back as far as the first day they met (which made everyone laugh again) - Mason found himself staring at her.

She was so wonderful. And the first person he had ever fallen in love with.

He wasn't sure what falling for someone really meant, but if there was one word to describe what he felt for Ana it had to be that. But even then it didn't feel like enough.

It felt as though his entire existence now revolved around Ana's. Anytime she was away he could almost feel the distance, an unidentifiable ache that couldn't be fixed by anything but her. She simply looked at him and it felt as though everything was the way it should be.

He was with her and it felt like tranquility and passion and chaos and excitement all at once. God he was obsessed with that feeling.

And he wanted her to know.
