《Royal Jester》9. Anastasia

"Paris," Ana was stopped from leaving the room by a fellow classmate. Charleigh, Ana believed her name was. "You can play the violin right?"
"I'm classically trained," she confirmed as she gathered her books from the table. She was a princes after all, it was practically her job to be trained in the arts. "Why do you ask?"
"We need more people to perform at a fundraiser we're hosting," she explained. "It's to help raise money for our sorority but only so many of us are talented you know," she giggled. "We're willing to pay for hire but we'd rather have UPenn students perform than anyone else. Hence why I'm asking you," she concluded with a smile.
Ana couldn't exactly pinpoint why but she felt as though the girl in front of her wasn't being entirely honest. "Charleigh right?" Her classmate nodded. "Why would I help you raise money for a sorority I'm not even a part of?" Charleigh's smile faded, her eyes suddenly refusing to meet Ana's.
"Well," she began hesitantly. "We are willing to pay so I just assumed-."
"Yes but I also have my own priorities, and - to be frank - I don't need your money." Ana realized she was being rude, but she knew there would most likely be cameras at a fundraiser. And (while her kingdom wasn't very well known due to its smaller size) if someone recognized her she would definitely make headlines.
"But," her eyebrows furrowed, "Aren't you attending with a scholarship?"
Ana felt like laughing, "No. Where on earth did you hear that from?" Really, where did she hear that from?
"Just- around," she shrugged uncomfortably.
The princess sighed, "Well, even if I was then you shouldn't act as though I don't have enough money because of it. And even more so on that point, that would be no reason for you to approach me."

"Paris," Ana suddenly heard a man call out. She glanced at the door as Charleigh too turned to face the person speaking. It was Mason. "Come on."
"You know Mason," Charleigh suddenly voiced. "How do you know Mason?"
She sounded almost angry, but what would she have to be angry about? "He's my roommate," Ana gave her a look. Didn't she already know that? Everyone did.
"Hm," she said. "No wonder you don't like me," she laughed dryly.
"I'm sorry?" What did she mean by that? "Well I'm going to go so," Ana trailed off uncertainly. "Bye."
She walked over to where Mason was leaning next to the doorway, rolling her eyes as he smirked. "Why are you here?"
"What? I can't fucking say hi to my favorite roommate?" She shoved his shoulder lightheartedly, walking through the doorway and hearing him start to follow behind her.
"I never said that," she glanced at him with a cheeky grin. "Or did you just find the present I left for you?"
"Jokes on you cause I love playing with balls," Ana snorted. "Wait- shit- not like that." Mason groaned and she looked at him just as he facepalmed. "Fuck," said with a slight chuckle. "Why do I sound like a complete ass whenever I talk to you," he muttered.
"Oh I don't know, maybe cause you are one?"
"Yeah yeah," he rolled his eyes. "But seriously though how the hell did you manage to put that many plastic balls in my room? You literally made a fucking ball pit in there."
Ana sighed with small shake of her head. "A lot of patience." Mason suddenly slung an arm around her shoulder as he stepped beside her and she tensed slightly before relaxing. "I had to have all of them shipped because no one sold them in town, obviously."

"Is that why it took so fucking long for you to get back at me?" He shook her slightly using his arm around her, rubbing her bare shoulder seemingly subconsciously.
"Yeah," she nodded. "But I think it was worth it," she gently nudged his hip with her own. "Don't you think?"
"Hell yeah it fucking was," Mason agreed. "Don't think that means this war is over though."
"I would never," Ana claimed exaggeratedly.
They both chuckled at her dramatic tone of words, before Mason suddenly sighed as their laughter faded.
"Why were you talking to Charleigh?" He sounded serious, something that Ana had never once heard from him. It seemed so out of place compared to his regular personality.
Something had definitely happened between those two. "She wanted me to play the violin at a fundraiser for her sorority."
"Oh," she noticed him look down at the floor. "Are you going to?"'
"No," she answered simply, "It's not like I need the money or anything. Besides," she continued with a shrug, "I didn't even bring my violin." She thought it might've been a bit weird to own such an expensive instrument as a college student.
"Hold the fuck up." Mason suddenly stopped walking, forcing Ana to stop as well. "I just processed- you can play the violin?"
"Yeah," she giggled as his jaw dropped.
"Why the hell didn't I know about this?" He suddenly forced her in front of him to make eye contact, grabbing onto her shoulders with a stern expression. "You have to play for me now," he demanded.
"I just told you I don't even have my violin," she reminded him.
"Shit," he released her to run his fingers through his hair. "Don't you have a video of you playing or something?"
Ana was sure there was some online, but that would mean revealing her identity to him as she knew that a regular person wouldn't normally perform in front of hundreds of thousands of people.
She supposed it wouldn't have been too terrible for him to know; he seemed trustworthy enough to not tell anyone else. He probably wouldn't even care enough to say anything.
"Nope."

Carly was sitting on the couch when they walked into the dorm but she paused whatever was playing on the television when she noticed their entrance. "Welcome back," she greeted.
"Hey," Ana responded as she closed the door behind them. "Have you had dinner yet?" By the time they had gotten back to the dorm, it was about five in the afternoon so neither of them had eaten yet but she wasn't sure about Carly or Josh.
"Not yet," her roommate answered.
"Perfect," Ana clapped her hands together softly. "I was planning on going out to eat but I didn't exactly want to go with just him," she gestured towards Mason. "He'd probably put salt in my water or something."
"Do you just think I'm a terrible fucking person or some shit," he laughed.
"Yes," Ana agreed with a nod.
"Ouch," Carly noted with a laugh. "A heterosexual woman that isn't attracted to you? Must be shocking."
"I'm used to her hating me already," he winked at Ana.
Josh walked into the room at that moment, giving Mason a pointed look that Ana couldn't quite decipher. "Paris is treating us to dinner? Is that what I heard?"
"That's not what she said-," her other roommates began before Ana interrupted.
"Actually, yeah it was. It was my idea so it's my treat; anywhere you guys want to go."
"Anywhere huh," she glanced at Mason to see him smirk.
"Okay so Mason doesn't get to decide the place," she corrected. "Josh? Carly? Where do you guys want to go?"
