《Royal Jester》7. Anastasia

"So did you end up using my advice?" Ana rolled her eyes at the excitement in Lili's voice. The advice she was referencing occurred during a phone call a few days ago. After the entire whoopee cushion fiasco - and a lot of embarrassment and anger on Ana's part - Ana had decided to call the younger princess and get her input on it; she was the one that suggested she get back at him.

"I did," she admitted as she applied a final coat of mascara on her eyelashes.

"Wait seriously? What did you decide to do?" They had only gotten as far as discussing the general thought of pranking him before Ana was forced to end the call on account of Carly entering her room.

"I replaced his shampoo with high-fructose corn syrup and the conditioner with a mixture of whipped eggs and heavy cream. He didn't even touch the conditioner bottle but the syrup sure made for an interesting hair gel," she laughed at the memory.

"I can't even imagine his reaction to that," Lili chortled. "Hey, wait a minute," she trailed off.

"What is it?" She rarely ever heard her younger sister sound so contemplative, so it was even more strange to hear it after such an insignificant conversation.

"Speaking of imagining him, what does Mason even look like? You never did tell me you know."

"You say that as if it matters whether you know or not." Ana set down her mascara, moving to pick up a clear lip gloss instead.

"It does," the younger princess claimed dramatically. Ana could practically hear the desperation in her voice. "Just tell me," she demanded.

"Fine," she sighed defeatedly. "He has brown hair and blue-wait maybe green eyes," she could've sworn they were blue but now she wasn't as sure.

"You suck at this," Lili deadpanned. "What does he look like?"

"Do you want a picture," Ana responded, voice heavily laced with sarcasm. But when her sister didn't immediately answer she paused in her movements. "You don't seriously want a photo of him do you?"

"I suppose if it's the only way I'd get to see him then I wouldn't object," Lili stated slyly.

"You're kidding."

"Now why would a princess ever do such a thing? How very un-royal like," she gasped as if completely appalled. Ana laughed slightly at the dramatics before composing herself to finally apply the lip product. "Well, " Lili exclaimed after a mere second of silence.

"Well what?" Ana didn't usually think of her sister as annoying - because they were both princesses and raised to be as pleasant as possible - but she found this entire situation to be very irritating.

"Send me the photo," Lili stated with a tone that implied Ana should've known in the first place.

"I don't even have one of him," and it would be strange if she did considering the only interactions with him thus far have been entirely unpleasant.

Lili groaned with frustration, "So go get one."

"It's not that simple." Ana rolled her eyes at the simple mention of having that conversation with Mason. He was cocky enough as it was, she didn't want to encourage him any more.

"Sure it is," she declared. "I'll stay on the line; just go out there and take a photo. Super simple."

Ana chewed on the inside of her cheek, contemplating the idea before exhaling with resignation. "I'm going to regret this," she muttered to herself. "I'm going now so I won't be able to hear you," she informed Lili.

She left her bedroom, nose wrinkling at the smell of freshly cooked ramen. At least she knew he was here. "Mason," she called out.

"What do you want," he responded dryly. She followed the sound of his voice to the bathroom, where he was styling his hair. He glanced at Ana out of the corner of his eye before refocusing on his reflection. "What?"

She didn't answer immediately, distracted by trying to figure out what exactly every one else saw in him that was so attractive. His hair was dark and wavy, long enough to curl around his earlobes and the nape of his neck, as well as cover the majority of his forehead. His eyes were blue, nose prominent and slightly crooked (from what Ana could only assume was from a bone break), and jawline dusted with stubble. He was also relatively tall but his slumped shoulders certainly took an inch or two off his height.

Rugged indeed, she thought to herself.

"Take a fucking picture," Mason's grumbled words brought her back to the present. "It'll last longer," he turned slightly to wink at her.

"Alright," she finally vocalized as she pointed her phone's camera at him and took a photo.

He gaped at her for a moment, seemingly caused speechless by her actions. Ana gave him an innocent smile before turning to make her way back into her bedroom.

"Hey wait a second-," Mason followed behind her. "You better fucking delete that."

"No can do," she spun on her heel to face him, "Sorry," and shrugged.

"I didn't actually think you would take a photo," he argued. "I probably look terrible." To think he was concerned about his appearance was more strange than anything else Ana had experienced as of yet. He just didn't seem like the type.

Don't judge a book by its cover, she supposed.

"So," she trailed off for a moment and watched his eyebrows furrow when her smile formed into a smirk. "Same as always then."

Mason rolled his eyes, "Fuckin' rude as hell," he muttered. "Why do you even want it anyways?" He sighed as he folded his arms across his chest.

So my sister will stop bothering me. "Science."

"Whatever," he responded with another eyeroll before turning back around to return to the restroom.

Ana shrugged, raising her phone up to look at the photo and laughing at the captured expression on his features. She quickly sent it to Lili before bringing her phone back up to her ear. "Happy now?"

"You didn't say he was cute," she gushed.

Ana groaned softly, "Not you too." She entered her bedroom, collapsing on her twin-sized bed before stiffening as she remembered that she had just done her hair. Too late now she supposed. "You do remember why we're even in this situation in the first place right? Because he's a jerk, that's why."

"But you already got back at him so now you're allowed to actually like hi-," Ana cut her off before she could continue any further.

"But then he got back at me for getting back at him," she explained.

"Wait seriously?" Ana swore that was becoming the younger princess's catch phrase or something. "What did he do?"

"He wrapped my bed in tin foil last night." She was getting upset from just the memory of how long it took to take it all off. "An hour before I needed to be asleep," she continued. "And you know how long it takes me to fall asleep so imagine what time I actually was able to sleep."

"Okay, I get it," Lili interrupted. "So what are you going to do?"

"I was thinking of pranking him again but I'm not sure what exactly I should-," Ana was cut off by the sound of her phone ringing. She pulled her phone slightly away from her ear to glance at the caller ID. "Hey, I'm getting another call. It's probably about my group assignment so I need to answer."

"Okay, bye! I'll call you tomorrow; you have to tell me more about Mason though."

"I will," she laughed. "Bye, love you."

She picked up the other phone call after hanging up on Lili, "Hi Caleb."

"Hey Paris," her English Literature class partner greeted. Caleb had been the first person Ana had befriended in a class. He was nice and easy to get along with so she often found herself spending her free time after class with him so she had given him her number before they were even assigned as partners.

"We were all thinking of meeting up at the library to further discuss the project and go over what we've all gathered so far." The we in question was a group of four other people that Ana had to do a group assignment with.

"When were you planning on going?" Ana had gotten along well with her group partners so she had no issues meeting up with them. The only possible reluctance she had was due to her own schedule. She had it all planned out to the precise detail for her to be able to turn in assignments on time so she had to be careful when making plans.

"At six. Would you be able to come?"

"I'll be there then," Ana confirmed.

"Would it be alright if I came over beforehand? I'd like to give you something and I thought it would be easier if we were alone and couldn't be teased because of it," he laughed.

"Oh." He wanted to give her something? "No problem. I'll text you my dorm room number then."

"Perfect, see you then." The call ended then and Ana was left to wonder what exactly Caleb was planning on giving to her.
