《Royal Jester》4. Mason

Mason loathed Josh with every fiber of his being.

"You're fucking shitting me," he stated incredulously after the stranger's announcement. To think his new roommate had seen him naked within the first five seconds of meeting.

The girl standing before him bit her lip, seeming to hesitate before responding. "I'm sorry?" Her eyes were still covered by her hands but - on further inspection - Mason realized that this girl couldn't be considered anything but a woman. Despite how uncomfortable she appeared, he could still see that she was self-assured in just the way she stood.

"Is this also a prank," Mason asked after remembering why he was in this situation in the first place. "Very funny Josh; you got me," he announced sarcastically. "You can come out now," he called out after there was no response.

"Sorry to disappoint," the stranger began, "but this isn't a prank."

"Of course it fucking isn't," he muttered.

"You mentioned someone named Josh," she observed after a beat of silence. She had an accent, Mason suddenly noted; he wondered silently where she was from. "He was actually the person I contacted about the room. He said that your other roommate moved out and you needed a new one, so here I am."

All of that was true, and Mason fucking despised that she knew it because that really meant it wasn't a prank and he had just scarred a poor random woman.

He bent down to pick up the textbook he had accidentally knocked onto the floor earlier, cringing as the girl deliberately turned her head away from his direction. Apparently her hands weren't very effective in blocking him from her view.

"Shit," he sighed and ran his free hand through his still damp hair. "I'm - uh - going to get dressed," Mason moved to walk past her after setting the book back down on the coffee table.

Just as he walked next to her he could've sworn he heard her whisper, "Good idea," and had to stop himself from laughing.

Mason practically bolted into his room before slipping on his boxers, a random t-shirt, and an old pair of jeans. He paused for a moment to process the situation, realizing with an eye roll that Josh most likely knew their new roommate would be showing up today and could've prevented the entire situation if he had only told Mason.

"So," Mason said as he re-entered the living room. He noticed that the woman had moved from the entrance to the couch, her eyes now uncovered and her face fully visible. He sat on the empty cushion beside her, watching as her gaze roamed over the room. "I'm Mason," he introduced.

"I'm Paris, nice to meet you." He wasn't sure how to explain it but she spoke so . . . prettily; maybe it was because of the accent.

"Your parents named you after a fucking city," he chuckled slightly.

"Isn't Mason also a city?" Mason's laughter stopped because she was probably fucking right, although he had no idea how she would even know or remember such a miniscule thing.

"Right," he cleared his throat. "So you still haven't looked at me since I got dressed," he stated bluntly. Paris drew in a deep breath, releasing it slowly before she adjusted slightly to turn towards him.

Mason regretted his words as soon as they made eye contact because holy shit her eyes could stare into the depths of a person's soul.

He also absentmindedly noticed that her cheeks were slightly flushed and he felt mildly guilty for being the reason for it. "There, I looked at you," she cleared her own throat and turned away from Mason once more.

It was silent for a few moments, neither one of them initiating any sort of conversation until - abruptly, "Can you please stop staring at me." Mason hadn't even realized he had been.

"Aww, is someone shy," he teased. It was almost second nature, he was so used to making fun of his own friends that he didn't even give it a second thought. He probably should have seeing as she was a complete stranger but it was too damn late now, now wasn't it?

"I am not shy," she shook her head adamantly but Mason was well aware of the fact that her face definitely wasn't this red earlier.

"Whatever you say," he smirked as an idea formed. "But you didn't," he paused for a second as if he was dreadfully uncomfortable. "See anything, did you?" Of course he really didn't care if she had; he was comfortable in his own body and damn proud of how it looked. But Paris didn't know that.

Her blush grew deeper, traveling down her neck and chest. "Of course not," she insisted. "You saw that I had my eyes covered," she reasoned.

Oh Mason was fucking loving this. "Do you want to?" He smirked as he imagined Paris's reaction to the question. Maybe another shriek of a sort; he was laughing just at the thought.

Instead (throwing him for a complete loop) her head tilted slightly. "Are you offering?"

He about choked on his own goddamn saliva. "What the fuck," he snorted. There was no fucking way this blushing girl just said that.

"Well are you?" She raised a brazen eyebrow, so unexpectedly different from the type of person Mason originally thought he was talking to. But (before he got the chance to answer) they were interrupted by the sound of the front door opening.

"Oh hello," Carly, Mason's other roommate, greeted upon noticing both of them sitting on the couch. "I thought we agreed on no fuck buddies in the living room. You know- cause of that one time with Josh."

"Pardon," Mason glanced at Paris to see her blinking rapidly, a look of pure disgust on her features.

"Josh is the only one that fucking does that and you know it," he laughed. Mason had never invited a girl to the dorm, let alone a fuck buddy. And-as far as he knew-Carly hadn't either.

"Right," she shot him a look. "So who is this then?"

"Our traumatized new roommate; we both gave her a shitty first impression of us. Hopefully Josh can do better because lord knows I was hopeless and you already fucked it up too." He probably should've felt worse than he did but he honestly found the entire situation far too entertaining.

"Hi, I'm Paris," said roommate stood from the couch to extend a hand in Carly's direction. Carly took her hand, shaking it with wide eyes.

"Carly," she responded. "How'd you end up moving in anyway? Our previous roommate literally just left."

"Well, I'm not completely moved in and unpacked yet but I actually talked to Josh about it." Paris shrugged as she sat back down beside Mason.

"No fucking way," Carly laughed as she sat across from them on the armchair.

"I was surprised too dude; thought it was a fucking prank." As Paris most likely already knew from their earlier interaction.

"It's true," Paris insisted. "I saw him post about it online and contacted him as soon as I could. I desperately needed a place to stay and he was more than willing to let me live with you guys." Mason could hardly believe his ears, a girl (and a semi-decent looking one at that) actually thought of Josh positively. That hadn't happened since they first started college because people had become well aware of his womanizer ways after classes started. "It's nice to meet you by the way Carly," Paris suddenly added.

"I can't believe Josh managed to find a roommate that's pretty, nice and has a foreign accent. And to think he did it all on his own. Holy fucking shit. You don't happen to be single and gay, do you?"

"Sorry to disappoint but I'm only the former," Paris giggled softly.

Mason rolled his eyes, "Stop hitting on the new girl, Carly. Besides she isn't even that nice; she didn't even say hi to me when she walked in." Okay so he wanted to fuck with her a bit more, sue him.

"Well, considering the circumstances, I thought it might have been a bit strange to worry about introductions." Mason watched as she rolled her eyes before turning away from him with a heavy sigh.

"Wait- pause for just a second. You mentioned making a bad impression, what exactly happened?" Carly interrupted and Mason smirked to himself.

"You know how Josh loves to prank anyone with anything absolutely fucking possible?" She nodded and gestured with her hands as if to say go on. "So I was taking a shower, as a person does, and I just happened to conveniently forget to lock the bathroom door."

"On no," Carly muttered with a facepalm.

"He took my fucking towel," Mason continued. "You can probably piece together the rest of it."

"It was certainly a memorable way to meet someone," Paris concluded with a small shake of her head.

The front door opened again, only this time it was Josh. He froze at the sight of Mason before relaxing slightly after seeing both Paris and Carly as well. "Oh- you must be Paris," he said with an exuberant smile. "Why are you guys just sitting here-," he trailed off, most likely realizing that Mason's hair was still damp and Paris had obviously been here a while.

"Want to hear something funny Josh?" Mason asked with a glare after a beat of silence.

"Um- not really," he faked a laugh, obviously not looking forward to his best friend's so-called funny story.

"Something weird happened to my towel. Wanna know who was here when I walked into the living room with my dick hanging out?"

"Fuck," he whispered before bolting out of the dorm with Mason running closely behind him.
