Virgo

"Yo, I can chuck this ball all the way over there, man!"

"For real?"

"Yeah, bro, wanna see?"

"Alright man, here-"

A football hit the back of my head with the force of a missile, knocking me clean off my feet. Struggling to get back up, I raised my voice. "I swear too God, I'm going to kill you idiots-"

"Sorry, Virgo, my friends love to mess around." A hand appeared in front of me. I looked up to see Leo grinning at me. I took his hand and he pulled me up without even breaking a sweat. "Well, your friends are douche bags, and you're one too."

Leo frowned. "What did I ever do to you, sweetheart?"

I hit Leo square in the chest with my hand, huffing as I turned away. "For real, girl, you're just messin' with me!"

"What a pig," I mumbled, putting as much distance as I could between myself and those obnoxious boys. Taking out my phone, I shot my boyfriend, Lewis a text: are we still going out for dinner tomorrow night? That was when I received an email from the school's college admissions board.

Dear Virgo Yeon,

We have noticed your outstanding GPA and would like to invite you to join the Tutors program here at Varsity High. This program qualifies you for extra credit and an additional extracurricular to place on your college application. Please come to the College Admissions office at lunch tomorrow if you wish to participate. I will assign you a student in your year (Junior Year) and the two of you can get acquainted.

With kind regards,

Mr. Valdez, Head of Varsity High College Admissions Board

I gasped happily, thrilled at the prospect of some extra credit. Ringing up to the apartment, I replied almost immediately to Mr. Valdez's email.

Hi Mr. Valdez,

I would be thrilled to join the Tutors program and I will see you at lunch tomorrow. Thank you!

Virgo Yeon

"Mom, Dad, I'm home!' I called.

"How was your day?" Dad asked, sitting in front of the TV.

"Great! I got invited to the Tutors program for extra credit!"

"That's my girl. Do you have any homework?"

"Yeah, I'm gonna go do it after I take a shower."

My dad nodded, turning back to his show.

I hopped into the bathroom, my thoughts running loose about what kind of student I might be assigned...

.....

"Welcome, Miss Yeon. I'm glad you chose to accept our invitation. The Tutors program here at Varsity High is incredibly prestigious and we're glad to welcome you aboard by assigning you your first student. You can come in now!"

My expression went from delight to disgust as I watched Leo walk in, grinning. "Mr. Valdez, are you confident that this is the student I have to tutor?"

"Yes. Leo's grades are slipping, particularly in Biology. Now, I know that you have achieved perfect results in Biology since freshman year, which is why I assigned you to Leo over here. There isn't a problem here, is there?"

I shook my head, plastering a fake smile across my face. "No problems at all."

"Terrific. Your first session is at 6 tonight."

I groaned internally, realising I had a date with Lewis. I was just about to ask to reschedule when I noticed Mr. Valdez's stark expression and thought better of it. "I'll meet you at the library, Leo."

I stepped out of the room where I was greeted (for the fourth time in three days) by Taurus and Pisces, who leapt out from behind the wall and screamed 'Boo!' I contained a scream, rolling my eyes. "So, how'd the meeting go?" Pisces asked, throwing an arm around Taurus."

"Well, considering that I got assigned Leo as my student, I would say not well."

Taurus' eyes widened and Pisces stifled a laugh, earning himself a slap across the neck from me. "Ow! You've gotta admit, it's kinda funny..."

"There is nothing funny about being assigned that doofus! He's a sexist, good-for-nothing pig."

Taurus nodded. "You're right. He's a disgusting guy. I just wish I'd seen that before."

"Well, maybe you can take this as an opportunity to set his head straight," Pisces remarked.

"That's honestly not a bad idea," I replied. "Virgo Yeon, smashing the patriarchy, one sexist pig at a time."

Pisces and Taurus laughed, shooting me approving grins as we turned a corner, running headfirst into Aquarius. She looked our way, dressed in an outfit consisting of black leather-look leggings, white heeled Chelsea boots, a black body-hugging tube top and a white vinyl puffer. Her hair, an icy blonde, was done up in a high ponytail and her makeup consisted of light blue eyeshadow, white graphic liner, fake lashes and clear lipgloss. In short, she looked powerful. Intimidating. "Move along," she commented, not even cracking a smile. The throng of guys surrounding her laughed at us. I turned toward Aquarius, looking her dead in the eye.

"Where's Gemini?" I asked.

"Probably crying in the bathroom," Aquarius replied, examining her freshly manicured nails. I rolled my eyes and we went on our way.

.....

"Leo, concentrate!" I exclaimed. "I had to cancel plans for this."

Leo ignored me, continuing to check out a girl who was borrowing some books from the Classic Lit. section. "Leo-" He stood up, ambling on over to the poor girl. "Hey, sweetheart." He smirked.

"Get away from me," the girl retorted.

"Actually, I was just looking for my library card."

"And why is that?"

"Well, how else am I supposed to check you out?"

The girl turned her nose up at Leo, continuing to browse the bookshelves. In spite of myself, I burst out laughing, much to Leo's chagrin. He walked back over to me, looking incredibly disgruntled. "What?" he asked rather grouchily.

"You're not gonna pick her up with a cheesy pickup line or a smirk."

"Well, enlighten me. How do I do it?"

"Maybe ask her about what she's borrowing."

"I don't know what she's borrowing!"

"She's looking for a classic. And... she's gone to the librarian."

Leo and I listened to the girl's conversation with the librarian for a few moments before I turned back toward Leo, smiling.

"She's looking for Wuthering Heights."

"What the hell is Wuthering Heights? Sounds like a disease or something."

"I'll have you know that Wuthering Heights is a classic. Anyway, the book's on loan, so she'll be back for it soon. Until then, we can study Wuthering Heights and you can strike up a conversation with her." I pulled out my own copy of Wuthering Heights. Little did Leo know, it was actually the book being covered in AP English.

"Hang on..." Leo snatched the book from me and sidled up to the girl again. "Hey, I couldn't help overhearing that you needed a copy of Wuthering Heights. I just wanted to say, you can borrow mine. I know it's kind of well-thumbed, but it's just such a great book, you know?" The girl grinned, accepting the book. "Thanks! By when do you need it back?"

"Keep it for as long as you'd like. Here's my number-just give me a call when you're ready to return it." Leo scribbled his number onto a piece of paper and handed it to the girl, who blushed.

"You're too sweet. Thanks..."

"Leo. What's your name?"

"Anne."

"Nice to meet you, Anne."

Anne turned away, smiling as she left with my copy of Wuthering Heights. I walked over to Leo, scowling. "What would you do that for?" He laughed, putting an arm around my neck. "Relax, Virgo. I'll just get you a new copy-that one was looking a little shabby anyway."

"Whatever. Can we please get back to Bio now?"

"Yeah, sure."

"Okay, so what is the purpose of the liver?"

"Well, it's called a liver. It's quite self-explanatory."

"What do you mean?"

"A liver helps you live. 'Live'r, right?"

I groaned, realising what I'd just gotten myself into as Leo smirked triumphantly.

This was not going to end well.
