Scheme II

Moon woke herself up with the help of an alarm at 4:50 A.M.

Turning a lamp on, she began to read the letters.

Dear Yuliana,

I have suspected that the Lumanlan family is hiding something really valuable. A gate to eternal life. It's what you've always wanted, right? We can finally enjoy life. Life forever.

Living to the fullest of life.

I have the perfect plan to assassinate all of the Lumanlans, especially their most influential and smartest family member: the Marchioness.

Sincerely,

A. Novarro

Moon narrowed her eyebrows. She was troubled. Who is Yuliana? A family member?

They're suspecting we have a gate of eternal life? Nonsense.

She unfolded another letter. A Post-It note containing her uncle's handwriting was attached to it.

I can't figure out which language/alphabet this is. I bet you can translate this yourself.

- Henry

Moon let out a light chuckle. "Oh, Henry."

Taking the note off, she began reading the letter. It was all lines and dots.

"Morse code? Nah, the lines and dots are put in more specific ways.." Moon said to herself, thinking. "And there are no slashes for spaces..."

Moon stared down at the letter for two whole minutes before she finally figured out what it was.

It's the Galactic Alphabet! The Novarros use that?

She started to write down the translation on a piece of paper.

ғʀᴏᴍ : ʏᴜʟɪᴀɴᴀ ᴇssɪᴇ

ᴛᴏ : ᴀsᴛʀɪᴅ ɴᴏᴠᴀʀʀᴏ

ɴᴏ, ɴᴏ. ʏᴏᴜ'ʀᴇ ᴛᴀᴋɪɴɢ ᴛʜɪs ᴛᴏᴏ ғᴀʀ. ᴄᴀɴ'ᴛ ᴡᴇ ᴊᴜsᴛ ɢᴇᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ɢᴀᴛᴇ ᴄᴀsᴛᴇʀ ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ᴋɪʟʟɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇᴍ? ᴋɪʟʟɪɴɢ sɪx ᴘᴇᴏᴘʟᴇ ɪs ᴀ ʟᴏᴛ ᴀɴᴅ ᴠᴇʀʏ ᴜɴɴᴇᴄᴇssᴀʀʏ. ɪғ ʏᴏᴜ ʀᴇᴀʟʟʏ ᴘʟᴀɴ ᴏɴ ᴅᴏɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴀᴛ, ɪ'ᴍ ᴏᴜᴛ. ᴀʟʟ ɪ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ᴅᴏ ɪs ғɪɴᴅ ᴍʏ ғᴀᴛʜᴇʀ.

Moon raised an eyebrow. So they think he's in a dimension of eternal life? If they think we have access to that dimension, are they thinking we kidnapped her father? Is their father Blue's cousin, the Prince of Kanto?

Sun woke up at seven A.M. to the smell of French toast and sound of faint chirping. The boy shivered once more as he looked up at the window. He had forgotten to close it.

The light breeze was lifting the yellow curtains. A bird flew in the room and landed on the window sill.

"Hello, little guy," Sun greeted. "Would you mind getting out? I'm going to close this window."

"No! Don't close it!"

Sun turned and spotted Moon in the doorway, holding a tiny bowl filled with birdseeds. She was wearing a gray sweatshirt and a pair of denim shorts. The Marchioness smiled and said. "This bird comes by every single morning."

"Really?"

"Yup," she responded with a giggle. Moon began walking towards the bird. "I named him Noir."

"How do you know it's a boy?"

"Females are brown."

"Oh. It's a Blackbird?"

"Yup! I've prepared breakfast for both of us."

"Oh wow, thank you! You really didn't have to do that."

"I had to."

"Said who?"

Moon placed the bowl beside the bird and took out her phone. She played a voicemail.

"Moon, it's me. Your mother. Your uncle Henry just told me you have a boy as your guest! Cook for him, won't you?"

She turned off her phone. "Said her. My mother wants me to show off my cooking skills, I guess."

"Haha. Oh, okay. It does smell good."

"Thanks."

Behind Moon, Sun walked out of his room and into the dining room. Two plates were placed across from each other. One plate had a French toast and a sesame bagel. The other plate contained a salad.

"What.. kind of salad is that?"

"Caesar Salad." replied the Marchioness.

Sun half-smiled and asked, "So is that French toast and bagel mine?"

"Mhm."

He sat down in front of his plate. "So many chairs and a big table for ten, yet you live alone."

"Yeah," she responded, sitting down in front of her salad. "Sometimes I sit in different chairs, taking on new perspectives. Sometimes I have guests."

"Oh."

"Hey, I have a question for you."

"What is it?"

Moon grabbed her fork and started to eat. "You seemed thinking of something yesterday about the prince's disappearance. What was it?"

"Oh, it was nothing—really."

"Please?"

"Did you read the letters?"

After a few moments of chewing, Moon replied, "Yeah, this morning."

"They mentioned the prince, didn't they?

Moon reluctantly put down her fork. "Yeah."

Sun ran his hand through his hair. "Well, I was thinking of Astrid. I looked her up and she's known to get away with things. She also apparently skilled at getting out of situations like the one that happened yesterday. But, Astrid gave in."

"I never knew a boy like you would make such observations and effort."

Because I'm a spy, he wanted to say. And as a spy, I need to know how to handle people.

"Aha, it was nothing," Sun said instead. "She just seemed.. suspicious!"

"Astrid's planning to kill me."

Sun dropped his toast. "She's what?"

"You know what I said," Moon hissed, letting out a sigh. "She's going to try to kill me."

"The letters.."

"Wait. Why am I telling you this?"

Sun ignored her comment. "We have to do something about this."

"We? No, no, Taiyono. You're not getting involved. I can defend myself."

"Remember what happened

yesterday-?"

"I know what happen yesterday!" Moon interrupted, picking up her fork rather hastily. "It was only one time."

"It can happen again, Moon."

She didn't say anything after that. After eating, she brushed her teeth, washed her face, and quickly tied her hair up into a ponytail. Moon changed into a creamy white ruffle blouse, a pair of white jeans, and black ankle boots.

Picking up her large suitcase, she went out the door. "See you in the afternoon, Taiyono."

"Bye."

⇺⇻

"Tell me, Sun! Dang it!"

"Tell you what?"

"Stop acting dumb. The person you're spying on!"

"Oh man, can't say right now."

"Even to your best friend?! Why?"

"Be quiet, Hau."

"Why—Oh."

Sun and Hau had arrived at the front of the school. Dr. Yoruichi, the principal, was lecturing a girl.

"I have come before you to talk about those articles you've written and taped all over the campus," she was saying. "They're about Selene being a fake?"

Sun frowned. Are they suspecting her?

The girl, too, frowned and look down at her feet. "I didn't say she was a fake." the girl told the ground. "I was trying to say maybe Selene isn't Selene."

"Look up at me, Miss Essie."

She obeyed and did so. "Yes, Dr. Yoruichi."

"If I see anyone gossiping about anyone, especially my daughter, there will be some very serious consequences. Understood?"

The girl glanced at Sun, and then to Dr. Yoruichi, "Yes, I understand."

"Thank you, Constance."

The woman then left the girl standing awkwardly in front of the two boys. She looked back at them and reluctantly smiled. "Guess that didn't go well."

Hau tilted his head. "So she finally caught you?"

"I only taped my articles on like two columns out of a billion here and she found them."

"You know you should've just spread it orally."

"I know," she told him, scratching the back of her neck. "But, I don't have very good social skills and not many friends."

"Oh."

"So, I see you two were eavesdropping."

Sun laughed nervously. "Yeah. Sorry about it."

She gave him a small smile before replying, "It's alright. By the way, do call me Connie. Constance is a bit weird for me."

"Why is that?" asked Hau.

"I've been barely called that by my family and friends. They all call me Connie and so I never really got used to being called Constance."

"So Connie Essie?"

"That's right! It rhymes, doesn't it?"

"Haha, yeah."

"Anyways, classes are starting really, really soon! I'll see you!"

"Bye."

"See ya."

"Oh wait, raven-haired!"

"Hm?"

"What's your name?"

"Sun, Sun Taiyono."

"Aaaand Hau Iki!"

"I didn't ask for your name, stupid."

"Why you!"

Connie began to walk away but before Hau could touch her, Sun grabbed onto him.

"Hau, come on."

"Don't 'come on' me! This girl just insulted me! Now let go of me!"

"Coooome on, Hau."

"Fine," he said. Sun let go of him. "I have a question, though."

"Hm? What is it?"

"Is it Connie?"

"Connie?"

"The one you're spying on. Is it her?"

"No."

"Then why'd you stop in front of her..? Oh wait, is it Selene?!"

Sun stayed silent. He was thinking how oblivious he was to the principal's surname. She was Moon's fake mother.

I'm so stupid, he said in his mind. How did I not notice?

Hau could see the uncertainty in his friend's face. "Sun? You alright?"

Sun faked a smile. "Yeah, I'm all good."

"So, is it Selene Yoruichi?"

The raven-haired boy stopped walking. Hau, too, stopped. The masalada-loving boy was only a few steps away from the young spy. Sun was looking down at the floor, blushing a bit.

"Is it her, Sun?"

He looked up and grinned, trying to hide his blushing. "Maybe."

Hau started laughing, loudly. Very loudly.

"Ooo! Sun has a crush!"

"No, I do not, Hau!"

"Don't tell me I didn't see anything on your face! You were blushing!"

"Geez, it's not breaking news."

"It is breaking news! I'm telling the principal!"

"Hey! Stop it," demanded Sun. "You're creating a scene."

"Do I look like I care?"

"No—."

"Exactly!"

"Ugh. Hau, please."

"So, is it actually her?"

"Yeah, but I don't like-like her."

"You sure?" Hau asked. "It's okay if you like her. Everyone likes her in some shape or form."

"Even you?"

"Eh," he replied with a shrug. The two continued walking. "I'd rather be friends with her, really."

Sun playfully hit Hau's arm. "That's Hau for ya."

"Yep! The one and only."

⇺⇻

Moon ran up the steps leading to the entrance of a forest. She felt uncomfortable running in ankle boots, but she knew she was going to be late if she didn't speed up her pace as much as she was.

Walking down the path she went almost every morning, Moon made sure nobody was around or following her. When she finally arrived at a cottage, she typed a code on a keypad next to the door of the rude-looking cottage.

The code for the keypad changed for each day of the week. It was a Tuesday, so the code on that day was 876876.

"Come on in!" a voice beamed from inside. "Is that you, Moon?"

The raven-haired Marchioness entered and closed the door behind her. The cottage looked old on the outside, but looked luxurious and brand-new on the inside. She glanced up at her partner. "Yup! Morning, Princess Platinum."

"We're friends, Moon," the bluenette told her. "No need to be so formal."

"Sorry."

"Hm."

"What is it, Platina? Oh! Is my grandfather doing alright?"

"He's fine. He's not doing any better or any worse than the last time you visited."

"Oh, I see."

"Moon?"

"Huh?"

Platinum crossed her arms. "You seem.. a bit down? Are you too lonely at your house?"

"No, I have a housemate now."

The bluenette clapped her hands together. "Ooo! Tell me who it is!"

Moon couldn't really refuse to tell her. After all, the princess gave up her free time to take care of her grandfather. So she sighed in reluctance and told her:

"A boy."

"Is he perhaps a family member?"

"No." the marchioness responded, taking her stuff out of her suitcase.

"A boyfriend, perhaps?"

"No! It's not like that." Moon hissed immediately.

"You coming upstairs?"

"Yeah."

The two girls ran up the polished wooden steps. They both entered Moon's grandfather's room and saw him laying on his bed. "King of the Alolan Monarchy."

Platinum bowed as Moon frowned at her beloved fragile grandfather.

"Hello, young women," he greeted. He spotted his granddaughter's worried look. "Fret not, Moon. I'm fine."

"No," she stated. "You're not."

Platinum tied up her hair. "We're going to give you a check up, alright?"

"Okay, girls."

The bluenette began examining his pill bottles to see if he was consuming as much as he needed to. It gave Moon a chance with her grandfather.

"The Novarros think we have access to some stupid eternal life gate."

"Legend says we did once," said the elderly man. "Us Lumanlans."

"Really? Didn't see it any books."

The king coughed before replying, "It's a very old myth. The Novarros must've gotten hold of a book. They should be smart enough that we don't have that kind of access."

"They are planning to kill us, grandfather."

"That's not a surprise."

"What do you mean?!"

"I don't mean the killing thing. I mean the eternal gate thing—."

"Eternal life gate, my king."

"Yes, the eternal life gate thing. Know the Kanto prince's disappearance?"

"Yeah. I know of it."

"I told Henry to steal some letters in the Novarro lobby. You read two of them. I read all of them."

"There were more than two?"

"Yes. Turns out, the Essies and the Novarros have a deal with each other. The Novarros agreed to help the Essies find the prince in exchange for positions in the monarchy and, of course, money."

"You figured all that out with your old brain?!"

"Hey, don't make it sound like I'm 99 years old. I'm only 78."

"That's old."

"My mental age is 7."

Moon sweat-dropped. "Seven year olds can't figure out situations like this one."

"Oh, well, then it's 17."

"Much better. Unless you're just guessing it."

"I am."
