《Jenny and the Beasts》4. Adapting

Jenny and Harvey developed a decent system that benefitted them both. Feeling less like a burden, Jenny's mood improved drastically. Harvey noticed and decided that this was a good thing. He was certain that he would continue to be startled by their different practices and accepted it.

He would be lying if he said he didn't like the meals she prepared. It also freed up some of his time though he wouldn't admit that openly. He tried to do what he could for both of them and felt a sense of usefulness. It was a male's honor and privilege to care for a female and he would likely not experience such a thing again. Harvey made the most out of it.

Jenny thought things were a little quiet. She knew that the bad things tended to happen when one gets comfortable. Though, she figured her current situation couldn't be called comfortable, but it was improving. It was now day five of being stuck in the book and Jenny was trying to take it in stride.

Bai Qingqing came to visit her and Harvey grew noticeably excited. Jenny sighed. A part of her hoped she was winning over the male, but another part of her insulted her for thinking that way. Although she was definitely attracted to his beauty and calm demeanor, her situation was a little too much for her to develop feelings for him. In the end, she was using him, she shouldn't delude herself into thinking she was guiltless.

Jenny talked with Bai Qingqing, but it wasn't progressive. The girl clearly wanted to say other things, but wouldn't with the others around. Jenny wrote on the ground and she did to. Her English was botched and poor, but Jenny's Chinese was non-existent. Funny how they were both hearing their own language. It must've been part of the magic of this world.

Bai Qingqing confirmed that the women was indeed human. She felt immense relief knowing that she wasn't in this bizarre situation alone. She wanted to speak more openly, but both Harvey and Parker liked to stare at her. Parker never gave her a moment alone either. Her period was ongoing and she could barely convince Parker to leave her alone.

Jenny waved at the girl as she left. Jenny never liked Bai Qingqing as a character, but she felt a little bad for her now. If you didn't know better and were thrown into this situation, it might be damn terrifying to stand up for yourself. That's what Jenny thought after experiencing Parker's strength for herself.

Still, Jenny's sympathy wasn't that strong. She watched Harvey's expression fall when the girl left. Jenny decided to ignore the hopeless love. Harvey seemed like a good guy from what little she knew of him. She wanted to root for him, but couldn't knowing how it would end.

They went inside to separate some herbs. Harvey distracted himself by teaching Jenny what he could. He didn't figure a female would ever need this knowledge, but he was happy knowing that she was interested in his craft. Most females take doctors for granted and he usually didn't let that bother him. Now that one showed appreciation and interest, he felt his spirits lift a little.

Jenny absorbed all of the information she could. There was a lot that she was familiar with, but some things were foreign to her and unique to this world. She hoped Harvey wouldn't mind if she had to question him again about the uses of those new herbs.

Before evening fell that day, a leopard came running into the hut. Startled, Jenny froze. Harvey asked what was wrong and the leopard told them that a feral took Parker's female and that he was gravely injured. Parker was carried in right after and Harvey started treating him. Jenny boiled some water and passed anything Harvey needed to him.

Peeking at the young male, Jenny could see how pale his face was. The blood dripping from his mouth looked very real to her. She turned her head away from the sight. The plot was moving forward and nothing seemed to have changed. She stepped out and let Harvey do his thing.

Jenny applied her chapstick while hanging around outside. She crouched on the ground and fiddled with her knife. She had used a moment of free time to sew a pocket inside her shirt. It was messy and looked funny, but it would let her carry a few smaller items in the new outfit.

She wanted to be prepared in case something unexpected happened. She knew Bai Qingqing's future, but not her own. She flipped her knife in and out. She wondered if it could hurt a beastman. Could she stab someone if she had to? She figured she could if it was that bad of a situation, but she questioned whether she could protect herself well. She tightened her grip on the knife, released, and tightened it again.

She knew where to kick and hit a person to incapacitate them, but knowing and doing were different things. Should she practice in her free time? Now that the MC was gone, Jenny figured she had time. She wasn't sure how much though. She wanted to see if she could get Winston before Bai Qingqing was rescued, but he probably wasn't in the city. He was trading salt or something from what Jenny could remember.

Plus, she would have to ask Harvey to take her. She seriously doubted she'd make it to the city by herself. She would figure out how to ask. She didn't want to bet everything on Winston, but it seemed like that was what she was doing.

Jenny scolded herself for taking this so seriously. She was supposed to be taking this easier. Heck, maybe she could even enjoy it. How often would she get to experience another world like this? She may not be considered pretty, but surely she could fine at least one man here. There were a lot of desperate ones. She felt a smirk on her face. She was depreciating herself again. She may not be a great person, but she wasn't terrible. She would definitely treat her significant other well and be loyal.

'Loyal...' Her thoughts came to a screeching halt. She couldn't be loyal here and expect to survive. Not at least in the way she thought. She wasn't off put by the idea of multiple husbands, but she couldn't really picture herself in that kind of situation. Heck, for her, finding a boyfriend was a challenge. At her age with zero dating experience...

She told herself that 21 wasn't too old. She would get the experience one day. Sooner than later it would seem. How was she going to sleep with men when she hasn't even held hands with one before? She questioned herself. Her future looked bleak. This world should be some kind of godsend for her, but no, she's considered ugly here too. For the same reason as back home. Actually, she was probably considered prettier on Earth.

Still, she wasn't going to expect this vain world to change its views for her. She may be considered ugly, but the three males she has interacted with so far don't seem to be revolted by her. That's a good sign. She isn't hopeless, just at a disadvantage when compared to the oh-so-pretty MC. The scars would lighten over time and her lips will heal. She didn't know how long she'd be stuck here, but she could look at the positives without worrying too much about the negatives. She would try anyway.

Feeling a little better, Jenny got up and started practicing her knife skills. She didn't want to know what she looked like right now and was grateful that everyone was distracted by the feral issue. Jenny put away her knife once she felt comfortable swinging it around. She then went on to doing some exercises.

Harvey came out to find her when he was done and took her to the river to bathe. He commented on her tree-etched marks and even praised her for it. She felt a little silly. It wasn't her skill. It was something others had tried. She said as much, but Harvey insisted that using a skill practically was important too. Jenny understood the reason in that and proceeded to blush stupidly while speeding up her pace.

Jenny wasn't used to being complimented by attractive men and it made her feel giddy. She scolded herself for being an idiot. Harvey gave her her privacy and she bathed quickly. She used the herbs Harvey gave her to clean with. It wasn't effective at scrubbing, but they did smell nice. She wondered if she could make soap one day. A shame she never watched any videos related to soap making in the wild. Instead she watched videos about building elaborate shelters in a forest and animals being funny or cute.

Jenny was glad she didn't have to make practical use out of her shelter making knowledge. She could make a fishing lure and hook set thanks to her dad, but that didn't seem relevant here. Fish was also one of her least favorite foods, though she could clean them very well.

She was brought out of her thoughts by that sensation of being watched again. She looked around, but saw nothing. She figured it was just her paranoia, but it could be real considering the world she was in. She finished real fast and left with Harvey. He also seemed on edge, but Jenny didn't dare ask if it was because she also felt like he was being watched.

When they got back, Parker was gone. Jenny shook her head. 'Crazy guy,' she thought to herself. The feeling of eyes bearing into her left and she relaxed. She could never tell if her sensitivities were paranoia based or real. She was scared to acknowledge her fears back home, but here, she was afraid to ignore them.

Once inside, she discussed it with Harvey. He agreed that he felt off on the way back and recommended that Jenny stay inside more. Jenny agreed since it scared her, but she knew it wouldn't stop an intruder. She shook her head and was suddenly very grateful that she was 'ugly.' Whoever was watching her was probably interested in her weird behavior. Once they were bored, they could move on. Jenny hoped it was that way, but hadn't convinced herself entirely.

Jenny spent the rest of the night making do with the vegetables and fruit they already had. Harvey apologized profusely, but Jenny swore that she was fine with that. She didn't want to be alone with the stalker out there.

Harvey nibbled on a few fruits and Jenny ate the rest. She wished she could've offered something else to him, and handed over the granola bar. He accepted it, but only ate a few bites. He handed the rest back after thanking her. Jenny didn't insist and finished it off. Normally the germs would gross her out, but she doubted there was anything that Harvey could pass her even if he was sick.

Harvey removed the soiled fur that Parker dirtied and swapped it for another. Jenny laid down to sleep and sighed. It wasn't her bed, but Harvey's straw pile was better quality than Parker's. She felt the large and furry leopard slide behind her and started to fall asleep. Logically, she knew Harvey was supposed to be very week compared to a lot of others, but having a big intimidating leopard guarding her still made her feel safe. Her eyes sunk and she drifted off.

Jenny spent the next two days doing her normal routine while also talking to Harvey. She had gotten pretty comfortable with him now and he still showed no romantic interest towards her. She decided she was incredibly grateful for that. Such tension would make her uncomfortable. Harvey answered all her questions about herbs, the village, and city.

If there was one difference that struck her, it was when she asked about clans. Harvey recounted the list of clans that he knew of and there were several additional ones compared to Parker's list. When Jenny questioned that, Harvey said that some of the other clans are very reclusive or a live a great distance from the city. Jenny thought it was odd since the eagles live on the sea cliffs and they must cover a large distance.

Even if Parker had shallow knowledge of the world due to his immaturity and lack of life experiences, would that account for the other kinds never appearing in the story before? Jenny decided not to think deeply about that now. She was sure that worry would come to haunt her later anyway.

Instead, she spoke to Harvey about other edible plants and the city. He in turn asked her about her culture. She tried to give him all the information he wanted, even calling herself human, but Harvey didn't react strongly to that part. He just looked confused for most of it.

"I've never heard of the human clan before. Do your kind hail from another continent?" Harvey asked. Jenny tried to bury her surprise, but failed. Were there other continents? How would Harvey know about that? She went ahead and asked him.

"There were some old stories from the ape clan about the gods splitting the original continent up. They don't focus on it since it isn't like we can reach them. They often tell their young cubs stories to keep them entertained," Harvey answered the questioned. He never really thought about the story since it didn't make any difference to him. Now he wondered.

"I'm not from there..." Jenny hesitated to continue. She liked and trusted Harvey well enough, but... Telling him she was human was easy because she knew he wouldn't know what that was. Suggesting she was from another world entirely, could be a much bigger cause for concern. Especially since she has only known him for a week.

"It's okay," Harvey said gently. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."

Jenny squirmed where she sat. She didn't wanted hold out and she damn sure wasn't going to lie, but she might not be ready to dump that on him. Jenny froze for a second and asked herself why she was taking this so seriously. Sure, she should to a degree, but she knew that the men here wouldn't care too much about that. They would have a much harder time handling her fertility than her otherworldly status. If he did freak out, she could follow up with her monthly period talk and throw him off track.

Honestly, she wanted to see how he would react to the otherworldly thing. She didn't plan to stick around the city and make an enemy of the ape king, so it shouldn't come back to bite her in the ass. She opened her mouth to speak and started unconvincingly, "I might be from another world."

Harvey stared for a while longer. Although Jenny did not say that statement confidently, he couldn't see why she would lie about something so ridiculous. He mulled it over in silence. Her clothes were made of foreign material. Her demeanor was very unusual. If she grew up in the city of flames, it could account for that last part, but not the first. She was also too healthy to have been held hostage by the rootless beasts and scorpions.

She also knew written language that he never heard of, but was unfamiliar with the kinds of clans that exist. He never really thought about another world existing, but the gods also resided somewhere else. Maybe they brought Jenny here.

Unaware of Harvey's thoughts, Jenny waited nervously for him to say something. His reaction wasn't exaggerated which seemed like a good thing. But his silence concerned her. Did she mess up? Perhaps holding that back would've been fine, Harvey didn't seem like the type to pry.

"I see. Did the gods bring you here?" Harvey asked with a newfound sparkle in his eyes.

Jenny's eye twitched. The look she was getting weirded her out. Like a religious man determining if the artifact in his hands was holy. Harvey didn't strike her as that type, but maybe he was. "I don't know how I got here," she answered honestly.

Harvey thought some more about it and was glad that he had taken her in his care. If the gods had sent her here, Jenny must be important. He would try his best to keep her safe. This village might not be enough protection for her. He certainly wasn't. His mood dampened slightly. Jenny had mentioned the city, maybe she wanted to go there. It had more protection.

"Do you want to go to the city?" Harvey asked.

"Umm, yes," Jenny answered after a moment, caught off guard. She did want to go. Long enough to find Winston.

"Okay, we should prepare. You will have more protection there and a greater selection of strong males," Harvey said. This was the least he could do for her. He was sure she wouldn't want such a weak guardian and Harvey didn't want to make a pledge like that unless his heart was into it. An image of Bai Qingqing flashed in his head. A small smile graced his lips. If Bai Qingqing was saved and brought to the city, he would be able to see her again.

His mood deflated again. Bai Qingqing wouldn't be interested in a weak male like him, but maybe he would have the honor of treating her ails again. His tail flicked restlessly. He wished she wouldn't have any reason to have him visit, but he also wanted to see her. His inner conflict raged, but he suppressed the emotions. He had things to do. He would bring Jenny to the city and help her settle down. He won't leave her until she finds two males to protect her.

"Okay. What can I help pack?" Jenny asked eagerly. She tried to remind herself that this wasn't a pleasure trip and kicked herself. Of course this was a pleasure trip. Of course she would find some fun in it. She was in a whole knew world for god's sake. She needed to enjoy it so she wouldn't go crazy.

Harvey hesitated to give her anything to do, but Jenny decided to be stubborn about it. Harvey showed her how to pack his medical bag with herbs and to prepare her own stuff. He sewed her a bag to carry her extra clothes and strange items of her world in.

Jenny did her task with a little excitement leaking out. The butterflies also hit her. She would get to see Winston. She felt stupid afterwards, but it wasn't able to kill her anticipation. Harvey said that they would leave tomorrow. The city was only a couple of hours away. Harvey would hunt early in the morning for breakfast and take them there after.

He finished her bag that she had him fashion a long strap like a cross body. Jenny left the chapstick and knife her one pocket and sewed the opening a little tighter. She didn't want them bouncing out.

She laid down that night and didn't fall asleep until late. She slept passed Harvey leaving and didn't wake up until he was back. She got to cooking while he bundled up a few furs from the bed. They both ate and she brushed her teeth. Harvey brought up using prickly fruit and Jenny nodded her head. She knew there was something that the MC used in the original story, but felt uncertain about asking for it. Harvey said that he would get it after they arrived at the city. Jenny felt guilty afterwards and hoped she could find some other ways to be useful.

After using the sandpit one last time, Harvey shifted and Jenny mounted the leopard. It was very odd to her, but Harvey seemed to not mind. He took off at a light trot until she got used to it. He sped up the pace into a full run as they left the village edge. Jenny wondered, a little late, if the village would miss it's doctor. She figured that was a pretty important roll after all.

Jenny gripped the leopard with her thighs and tried not to fall off. She was a pretty decent horse-back-rider, but this was very different. The gait, the bounce, and the way the muscles moved below her, none of it was similar. She hoped her thigh muscles were fit enough for the task.
