《The Call (Lucy/Caspian)》Chapter 1

Cambridge, England 1949
Lucy looked out of the window in her small apartment living room searching for a familiar face. She had been anticipating this day for months, and she was so happy it was finally here. Her heart suddenly leaped and she felt giddy as she ran to her door to greet her guest. She subconsciously flung the door open and flew into his arms.
"Oh Peter! I'm so glad you could come!" She said happily as she hugged her older brother for the first time in over a year.
"You know I couldn't miss the birthday of the century." Peter chuckled. "Happy birthday Lu."
Lucy sighed with a smile. "Thank you." She whispered.
"And when were you going to tell me Peter arrived?" Edmund stated as he leaned, with his arms crossed, against the kitchen doorway. His dark eyes twinkled with mischief as he came out of the kitchen and finally approached them.
"Oh Ed it's great to see you." Peter said as he released Lucy and grinned as the two brothers hugged each other tightly. Lucy studied the two, and she knew that their bond went far deeper than the bond of two brothers. No, Lucy thought, it was stronger than that. Their bond signified their past.. Who they once were, who they really were.
The moment ended, and they broke apart. "So, what do you think of the place?" Edmund asked lightly, gesturing to the small apartment.
"It's saved us a lot of money." Lucy emphasized.
"Well if it's saved you money, then it's a good place indeed." Peter said with a grin.
"It really has. Since both Lucy and I are going to university now, it's less expensive to live together instead of apart on campus." Edmund stated.
"And you get to see each other all time." Peter added happily.
"I know. It has been so much fun." Lucy said happily.
"So how is America?" Edmund asked curiously. Peter paused as he thought carefully.
"It's not everything they say it is," he finally answered. "I think when I am finished with law school and graduate from Yale, I want to move back to England." He answered.
"But why?" Lucy asked in confusion. "I thought you always wanted to live in America?"
Peter sighed heavily. "I know, I did too," he said softly. "But being back in England, it reminds me of us, when we were younger, and together. And it's the only place where I really feel Him." He answered, his voice raw with emotion, and it made the three of them remember once again, of where they knew they really belonged.
Narnia.
Where a Lion awaits.....
"Oh Peter, we haven't even eaten supper yet." Lucy said as she rubbed her eyes and sniffed her nose.
"Oh I'm sorry Lu, sometimes I just can't help but remember." He said sadly as he comforted her with a side hug.
"How about we eat first and then talk." Edmund said, trying to change the subject. Lucy nodded and the three of them slowly made their way into the tiny kitchen to eat supper.
"I made your favorite, vegetable soup with fresh bread and cherry filled biscuits for dessert." Lucy stated happily as she got the silverware and dishes out. Peter laughed. "Lu, it's suppose to be your birthday. You didn't have to make my favorite food."

"Oh no." She responded. "I just want you to have a good visit and get all of the food you have probably missed." Lucy smiled. "And how is law school?" She served three bowls of soup on the coffee table and sat down next to her two brothers. "Oh I suppose it's alright." Peter responded. "I'm just excited I only have one more year of schooling and then I can help people." Lucy wasn't surprised when Peter announced he wanted to become a lawyer shortly after his last time in Narnia. It really wasn't that Peter loved to argue as most lawyers do, but it was that he loved understanding the laws and abiding by them in Narnia when they had once ruled. She remembered she would often find him studying ancient scrolls late at night in the grand study of Cair Paravel. Even though Peter loved everything about laws and traditions, she knew he loved it because he wanted to help people. He wanted to make people's lives easier and so that they could have a structure in Narnia. And in their world too, Lucy reminded herself.
"Say whatever you want Pete, but we all know the truth. You just want to be a high paid Lawyer." Edmund smirked.
"Well, I suppose it's that too." Peter grinned. They conversed heartily as they ate their meal. "And how is university for you, Ed?" Peter asked as he chewed on a slice of fresh buttered bread.
"I am actually enjoying it. Since the last time you have visited I have been given access to a laboratory which is rare for a third year college student. I recently started working on an irrigation project and developing expansion methods in the agriculture trade. In fact I have been finding some attributing research in my studies. Last week the Department of Sciences Director contacted me and offered me an interning position in northern Brazil over holiday." Edmund informed in a gentle tone. Even though he was very intelligent, Edmund never bragged or elevated himself above others. Lucy always remembered him having a keen interest in the agriculture and trade agreements during the Golden Age. Now Lucy believed Edmund wanted to better the industry and further expand the field of agriculture and trade. She had no doubt that Edmund Pevensie would accomplish great things as an agricultural scientist.

They all had a good time, Peter and Edmund complimenting Lucy on her cooking skills, and they talked as if they had never grown apart, but after the dishes were washed and the food was put away, they all migrated to the living room, and they were all anxious and excited to talk of the things they only spoke of on Lucy's birthday.....
Narnia.
Though they were devastated Susan had stopped believing, and though she tried to banish them from speaking of it, three of them knew they could never obey that rule. So, every year on Lucy's birthday, they would laugh, they would cry, and they would tell whatever adventure came to mind.
"Peter remember when you and I went swimming in the Eastern Sea when it was a full moon?" Edmund said with a laugh.
"Oh boy do I!" Peter said crying from laughing so hard.
"What happened?" Lucy asked, wide eyed with curiosity.

"Oh nothing happen-"
"That's a lie Peter, Lucy he got stung on his leg by a jellyfish and cried the whole night!" Edmund with a laugh.
"I was only eightee-"
"Oh Peter you poor thing!" Lucy said sympathetically, making Peter blush.
"Wait! Peter remember that time when the princess of Archenland came for an entire week and wouldn't go away until we-"
"That was brilliant Ed!" Peter yelled with a laugh, already having forgotten the previous embarrassing story told by Edmund.
"Who was this?" Lucy confusingly asked. Edmund and Peter didn't hear her unfortunately for they were screaming and crying and laughing as they thought of what they had done.
"What did you two do?" She asked impatiently after they had somewhat calmed down.
Edmund and Peter began to wipe their eyes from the tears they spilled from laughing so hard.
"Do you remember princess Viola?" Edmund said grinning.
"Oh yes. She was the girl who was friends with Susan." Lucy said evenly.
"You don't remember how taken she was with our brother?" Edmund asked seriously.
"No." She replied.
"She wouldn't leave the castle for a week because she was so in love with Peter. Don't you remember?"
"Oh yes! It's all coming back now. She acted as if he was her dog." Lucy said amused.
"Well one time, you and Susan decided to go riding one day, and me and Peter decided to stay in and take care of serious business in the throne room when the princess came bursting in alone." Edmund began, his face began turning red as he tried so very hard not to laugh.
"She started grumbling about how he was not spending enough time with her, and me and Peter were rather bored of such serious affairs that morning, so we just wanted to have a little fun." Edmund said starting to laugh once Peter bursted out laughing.
"What did you too do?!"
"Oh Edmund do tell her!" Peter said with glee.
"What did she say again Pete? Oh that's right! She whined 'Peter why are you always so busy? You need to spend more time with me.' " Edmund said in a high pitched rather annoying voice.
"And then I said. 'Didn't you hear? Peters already married to a housemaid, but he's always looking for a new mistress. Peter she would make a good mistress wouldn't she? And during the day she could clean the chamber pots!' "
"Oh no!" Lucy laughed and couldn't help but cry with laughter alongside Edmund and Peter.
"I've never seen a face more red in my entire life! Have you Ed?" Peter laughed.
"Never! And then she squealed and yelled and cried and moved faster than I've ever seen her move before!" Edmund clapped his hands and laughed hysterically.
"I guess it's a good thing Susan never found out though, because she would have had us both for supper for ruining her reputation."
Edmund said happily, but then frowned as Lucy and Peter grew serious.
There was a long uncomfortable silence that followed, and just when he was about to apologize, Lucy said. "How... is Susan Peter?" She whispered.
She saw the sadness come in her eldest brothers eyes.
"She thinks she's okay, but she keeps getting worse Lu." Peter said sadly. "She's not even coming home at night, she just keeps going to the pubs at night and rustling with young men."
"Oh no." She whispered, making another long silence.
Peter sighed. "I'm sorry Lu, this was suppose to be your day." Peter apologized.
"You know I've actually got something for you." He added and went into the kitchen without a second glance.
"Oh really?" She said loudly.
"But open mine first." Edmund said as he sat next to her on the couch and put a delicately wrapped jewelry box on her lap.
"Oh Ed you didn't have to, helping me rent this house for my studies was quite enou-"
"Just open it Lucy." He said practically.
She finally shrugged and slowly unwrapped the little box, and when she opened the lid, she was startled to see her favorite necklace she often wore in Narnia during the Golden Age.
"Oh Edmund! How did you-"
"It was Caspian's idea. He said I could keep it for you, and I wanted to give you something really special for your eighteenth birthday." He smiled.
"Oh thank you Ed!" She smiled. "It will help me remember all of the wonderful days playing on the beach or riding across the countryside."
"Your welcome Lu, now I don't think Peter will be able to beat my gift." He teased.
"Ed!" Lucy said as she shoved her elbow into his side on the small couch.
"Actually I think I will." Peter said seriously as he sat next to her on the cramped couch with what appeared to be a shoe box.
She took the box and slowly opened the lid, expecting to find a pair of new shoes, which were hard to come by, but found something within that was worth far more than any pound could buy.
"Oh Peter!" She exclaimed. "My dagger! How ever did you manage to-"
"Aslan said I said I could take it back with me since I was asking for someone else."
"Oh these two gifts are the best any girl could ask for." She said as her voice cracked. She lifted her arms over their shoulders and pulled her beloved brothers close to her heart.
"Thank you." She said sincerely, but then grew serious as she looked down in the box.
"Peter is that?...." She said trailing off.
She quickly released them from her hold and slowly reached into the shoe box, and carefully lifted up the beautiful glowing dagger.
"Are those words?" Edmund whispered as the three leant in trying to see decipher what it said.
As Lucy saw the familiar words of great power, she slowly began to recite the deep magic without even knowing it.
"Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight.
At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more.
When he bears his teeth, winter meets it's end.
And when he shakes his mane, we shall all have spring again."
And when she finished the last word, the three of them vanished.
